James Johnson and Phil Smith bring you the best and most up to date Jacksonville Jaguars news. "Touchdown Jaguars!" is a tribute to the prospective ownership group "Touchdown Jacksonville!" In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams and "Touchdown Jacksonville!" announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists. In November 1993, the NFL owners voted 26–2 in favor of awarding the 30th franchise to Jacksonville. James and Phil have been fans of the franchise ever since and have had the honor (and sometimes dishonor) of covering the team professionally since 2017. The rest as they say, is history.

Incredible, incredible Play action Upstairs Wide open Tommy Bohannon, touchdown Jacksonville, looking for Jimmy in the end zone. Touchdown Jaguars. Touchdown Jaguars. Touchdown Jaguars. Welcome to the Touchdown Jaguars podcast. Here are your hosts, james Johnson and Phil Smith. Hey, everyone, welcome back to the Touchdown Jaguars podcast. I am your co-host, phil Smith, and joining me, as always, is your other co-host, james Johnson and Jay.

Speaker 1:

It was a very busy month of July for not only the Jacksonville Jaguars but for you and I, as well. As all of you listeners probably noticed. There was a lack of content as far as the podcast goes, and we do apologize for that, but do make sure you're always keeping up with us over on social media. So, jay, we're going to take this first episode here in the month of August to kind of recap some of the things that we missed, that we didn't necessarily get a chance to cover. So we appreciate all of you for the support. You've all been a lot of. You have been retweeting us for you know, being interactive on social media, things like that when it comes to, like, the top 100 list, which we'll get to here in just a moment, as well as training camp news that has come out over the last few weeks.

Speaker 1:

So, jay, I am excited to be back here with you as we turn the corner into August and we're recording this here on Wednesday night, july 31st, the very last night, jay, of the year where there will be no football during the week. The Hall of Fame game is tomorrow night. This episode will come out on Friday, august 2nd, so the game will have already happened by the time this episode drops. But, jay, we made it. We got through the football-less landscape that is out there Now. Obviously I had a bit of a of a exciting summer because of the Dallas Mavericks and obviously the Olympics are going on right now, so that has helped out quite a bit. But, jay, we are on the cusp of it. Football is back, baby, and I am excited to get back into our regularly scheduled programming.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, man, and it actually didn't feel like too long of a wait, right, feel like too long of a wait, right, as you said, it's probably because, like of the olympics and the content or the, the sports landscape in between has been pretty exciting. So, yeah, um, it don't feel like it's been too long. I actually feel like I didn't get enough rest during the off season. But I guess that's neither here neither there, because it's almost go time. So, yeah, man, real excited about the preseason, ready to start actually diving in the tape. You know some game tape and whatnot. Also, there was the draft that occupied us too. That was a pretty exciting time as well. But anyway, yeah, I can't wait to start evaluating game tape. You know of the preseason, I think last preseason was pretty fun for me in terms of just looking at the tape. I know, you know Nathan Rourke was killing it, so you know we were looking at his tape, and you know some of the other standouts in the preseason. But I can't wait to get back to that man, back to that man.

Speaker 2:

And um, as always, uh, you all know where to find our content in terms of our website touch now jaguarscom. Of course, we appreciate all of the clicks we can get there and all the support in general that we get from there. So feel free to check that out. Archived episodes will be on there. I'm still doing those scouting reports. I haven't forgot about them. I've still got a few to do on the rest of the draft class and, um, yeah, of course you know where to find us in terms of social media, which phil will go ahead and plug right now yeah, everything you need is in the link tree link in the show notes of this episode, as always, you'll find the website.

Speaker 1:

You'll find our social media, as well as a link to download the SeatGeek app so you can use our promo code touchdown jaguar save $20 on behalf of touchdown jaguars on your very first purchase with SeatGeek. We have all these games coming up. Obviously, baseball is in full swing a full concert schedule here in Jacksonville or wherever you're at, so make sure you just use that promo code touchdown Jaguars. It is incredibly beneficial to us and we very, very much appreciate it and shout out to those of you that have already used the promo code thus far. You can also head on over to Apple Podcasts or Spotify and leave the show a five star review. That would also be very much appreciated. But, jay, let's dive right into it.

Speaker 1:

As we already mentioned, we missed a whole lot since we have been out in terms of episodes, and we're going to start off with what the people were clamoring for right for the longest time the poor social media manager. Whenever anything was posted on, whether it be Twitter or Facebook or Instagram, wherever it was, the question was where are the throwbacks? When are the throwbacks dropping. Hey, that's cool. Throwbacks Question mark. And we finally got them. And we got a great reveal with the amazing video with Andre Sisco and Tyson Campbell, who we're going to touch on here in just a moment. But, jay, I think they turned out great. Shout out to those of you that were there the morning of the drop and shout out to that fan, jay. I'm sure you saw who camped out the night before, who was there, I believe, from 9 pm until the doors opened the very next morning and they look fantastic. I believe they at the store. They had the players you expect you know Trevor, christian Kirk, some of the throwbacks, I think, tony Buscelli, fred Taylor and probably a couple other players that I am forgetting.

Speaker 1:

I have not copped mine yet. I don't know. If you put in an order, I need to do one here. I'm actually kind of holding out to see if maybe they're going to release more players. The one that I have my eye on that I've mentioned in our group chat is I would love a Rasheen Mathis. Shout out to Rasheen, who we talked about in our very last episode at the beginning of July, when we talked about our Jaguars, mount Rushmore, as a honorable mention. But I would love a Rasheen Mathis 27 throwback and here in the you know the, the re-release of the throwbacks that were in a Rasheen Mathis 27, so I also think a an MJD would find myself find itself in my closet pretty quickly.

Speaker 1:

But, jay, walk us through your reaction. You know we saw the great video. Uh, we saw everybody lined up at the miller at the mec and it was a great turnout. Shout out to jay paul, friend of the show, who got there as well and sent some pictures of. Uh, you know what she had gotten. But, yeah, what do you think? Did they nail it? And which jersey are you ordering first, if you haven't already?

Speaker 2:

So yeah, I was there day one, not in person, not at the MEC, but I was waiting online day one. I had already did my research from the Eagles Kelly Green throwbacks so I had planned in advance. When they announced that the throwbacks were coming out at 9.04 am I figure, even though they wouldn't say it, I figured they would be on NFL Shop. I probably would have been better off getting mine off of Jaguarscom, because everybody that ordered off of Jaguarscom or Shop Jaguars they've received theirs within the last few weeks and mine seems like it's on back orders. They said I won't get it until like August the 10th or something like that, or they won't begin like shipping it until August the 10th. So it's all good. You know, I could wait a few weeks, it won't kill me, but I did get one. To answer your question, I got a Fred Taylor jersey, which may come as a shock to everybody. As a Georgia Bulldog fan, fred went to UF but, as you all know, when Fred became a Jaguar, me and Phil had spoke highly about him. As a matter of fact, we spoke highly of him in the nostalgic episode, right, and how he should be in the Hall of Fame and that should have been an indicator right there that I was going to get a Fred Taylor jersey. But I got Fred Taylor because when I got in the shop I had a classic Jay moment where I couldn't decide which jersey I wanted from a current player. Now that it's hitting me, I think I want Andre Sisko because I want a single digit number. But at that time time I couldn't process like. It was like do I get a Trevor jersey? Do I get you know, this player? Do I get that player? Do I get ETN? I didn't want to get NTN because I already have an ETN jersey. So I just went with. You can't go wrong with the alum, right? You can't go wrong with the old school player. You especially can't go wrong with I'm calling it now a especially can't go wrong with. I'm calling it now a future Hall of Famer in Jazz Gray and Fred Taylor. So I just went with the Fred Taylor joint in teal. I will be circling back sometime to get some more jerseys as well while they are hot. But yeah, in terms of the excitement, I was super excited. I was just scared they were going to run out just after I did the research on the Kelly Green jerseys for the Eagles. So I was waiting there at like 9.04 on the dot I already had my credit card saved and Apple paying all that. But, to their credit, the NFL did a good job with stocking this time and they weren't like running out or anything like that and the website wouldn't crash and like it was when the kelly green jerseys came out. So shout outs to them for being prepared.

Speaker 2:

Um, I do wish I would have gotten one of those hats that I saw. Uh, hopefully they'll restock those. It was a. It's the throwback hat, it's the golfer hat. That's all black with the jaguars prowler on it and it has a white string on it. I wish I would have got that. I hope they restock those, even though my afro can't fit that right now so I have to do something about my hair. But yeah, in terms of the presentation, they nailed it right. I love that video. I still watch that video, like now.

Speaker 2:

In terms of the andre cisco video and a tyson campbell video, who we'll talk about a little bit now.

Speaker 2:

Shout outs to leon.

Speaker 2:

Seriously, too, he played the.

Speaker 2:

He played the heck out of that part of being the uh retailer, the cashier at the davinage store, and uh, he's just been nailing it and I think t wig said is he's been nailing it.

Speaker 2:

When they asked him to do some kind of nostalgic video for us, leon cersei has like nailed it and um, you know, I guess you could say he's a friend of the show because he was on one hour old podcast and he killed it one of my favorite interviews ever. But shout outs to him and the whole concept of that video, um, I think they did the video at um the shop on I think it's on beach I I forget their name, collective, I think shout outs to them who they sell venice jaguar stuff. But they shot it there at collective and they nailed it with all the nostalgia, the posters in the back, the old school jaguars merch around them. It was just pretty dope man and like it felt like the Jaguars broke Twitter that day because the obviously a lot of people that aren't Jags fans outside of the fan base, non-casual fans were even saying like, hey, these throwbacks might be the best in football.

Speaker 1:

So the Jaguars got some shine on that day and uh, needless to say, I was really excited in terms of that release yeah, jay, and to put your mind at ease in terms of ordering it from shop jaguars or nfl shop or whatever, it all runs through fanatics, so no matter where you're running it from, it's all coming from the same warehouse. So yours just your order just may have come in, unfortunately, a little bit later or, depending on uh, the jersey that you ordered, like you said, you got fred taylor, so they may just not have a whole bunch of them and they're just waiting on more to come through, but it's all through fanatics now, unfortunately, as we all know how fanatics has handled a lot of uh, you know, when it comes to their orders and releases and inventory and issues like that. But it seems like people are, like you said, starting to get their orders as they start to trickle in. Jay paul just got her custom jersey in very recently, so they are, you know, slowly trickling out. I am interested because we do want to go to training camp here in the next couple of weeks to see if uh, you know what the inventory is on site, you know, at the miller electric center, um, because, uh, obviously there aren't too many choices left online, um, in terms of options.

Speaker 1:

I mentioned this to you in the group chat. You know I kind of want a christian kirk, but you made a good call when you said, you know you went with the fred taylor because, realistically and I don't want to be a downer here, like Christian Kirk is probably here, what? Another two, three years if we're lucky, right, and I still think he. You know he's definitely one of my favorite players on the team, but that's a risky, a risky purchase and you know I didn't want to go just straight up with the 16 and you know everyone is going to have that one. I will buy a Trevor Lawrence one eventually, but for the first one I wanted to get something a little different. I'm kind of leading towards maybe Travis ETN or maybe even Evan Ingram. Trayvon Walker, we think, is going to have a big year, so maybe even that.

Speaker 1:

I just like having jerseys that are, you know, not necessarily everybody will have, even though I do fully intend on getting that trevor lawrence jersey. But going with the fred taylor is a great call. A lot of people went with the basselli um. But yeah, come on jaguars, you got to extend the player base. We need more, we need more legends. Let's get an mjd, let's get a Rasheen Mathis. I think people would, would absolutely love that. But yeah, it was a great presentation, great rollout.

Speaker 1:

You know social media was certainly very excited about the return of these jerseys and I know a lot of people were kind of talking about making these the the primaries, kind of talking about making these the primaries. I don't know about that. I think it, just having them show up only every once in a while for a special occasion, I think is great. I think that's a great move. What I want, jay, and I think a lot of people have expressed, is the return of the throwback black jersey. That's the one I had. I think the very first one I had in that style, unfortunately, was a reggie nelson. It was either reggie nelson or byron lefwich. I had one of those two in the black jersey, but I would love to see those return with a fresh, uh, new coat of paint, like we did with the teal yeah, I agree, you know me and you talked about it.

Speaker 2:

Even if they had black, I was going to pass on the black for now, that's more so for the winner, because, like, if we're not in the press box, wearing black at a Jaguars game is a no, no, not until we get that roof. So I was like, oh, I don't know about the black yet, which I mean, I already got way too many like black pieces of Jaguars merchandise. Anyway, I do want a black one eventually, but I just can't bring myself to wear it, like in the beginning of the season with them. It's going to have to be like December or January for me to wear that. Yeah, and I agree, like I don't want the throwbacks back permanently.

Speaker 2:

Um, you know, I know, like everybody was, you know, at the moment feeling the nostalgia. And let's not forget, though, the throwbacks also came with some rough times for the jaguars too, right. So, like you know what I'm saying, like it wasn't always all good when we wore the throwbacks, right, Of course, when Tom Coughlin was here, for the most part, you know, we had success, but it was some rough times after that too. So, like you know, I have those memories to reflect on too, in the throwbacks as well. But you know, it's perfect as it is, like, just have it as an occasional thing. You know where I'm like twice a year I think they will wear them. Well, so far it's been announced that we're on once this year against the Colts. But I say, you know, at the most twice a year, maybe three times a year If you, you know you throw the black one in there. But yeah, man, I'm excited it's all get out. I am going to be losing a lot of money in the next two months when it comes to this throwback apparel.

Speaker 1:

That's such a good point. When it comes to these jerseys, like, yeah, everybody remembers 99 and the good times and you know 2007 and you know those. But I went through a lot of hardship when it comes to these throwbacks and those black jerseys. They would whip them out on primetime and then lose to the Bengals or the Ravens or somebody, whoever it was the Steelers. But, yeah, I am certainly in the camp, like you said, of not making them the full-time jerseys, just want to see them on special occasions. But, yeah, definitely need to get the black ones out there. Not maybe yeah, certainly not a September fit, or even October, maybe not even November, but December and January definitely want to break out the alternate black jersey and hopefully we'll get that a little bit down the line. But, yeah, obviously very exciting. I'm excited to hopefully get to camp here in the next couple of weeks with you and Boogie and whoever else might be out there. But I definitely want to cross my fingers that the inventory on site is a little bit better than what they have left online. But, jay, let's move into the second set of news that came out here over the course of the last few weeks. This one actually came out last week and sparked a little bit of a conversation in the group chat.

Speaker 1:

Obviously, we are very big fans of Tyson Campbell and it's noted. You know we talked about it all last year. He had a down year. He was certainly a little banged up, but definitely not the Tyson Campbell we saw in 2022. But it did not prevent the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tyson Campbell from agreeing to a four-year contract extension worth $76.5 million, including $53.4 million effectively guaranteed. This was reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. The deal will make Campbell the highest paid cornerback to have not yet appeared in a Pro Bowl in NFL history. I felt like that wording is so strange. The contract's $19.125 million average annual value makes Campbell the league's seventh highest paid cornerback and, of course, he was drafted back in 2021.

Speaker 1:

And the second round with the 33rd overall pick jay again big fans of tyson campbell here on the podcast. You were a little bit more familiar with his game, being a georgia fan. Uh, coming with him, coming into the seas, coming into the league obviously part of that one urban meyer draft that we got and you know this sparked conversation, as I mentioned, amongst our group chat, because of the down year he had last year. So you know, walk us through your initial thoughts. It's been a little bit over a week since this deal came through. The jaguars spent money on keeping their own, which I think is always a good thing. Trevor Lawrence, jah and Tyson Campbell and I think that's a very, very good thing, especially when you have other contracts coming up that will be tricky. Andre Sisco, right Travis Etienne these are some of the names that are coming up here shortly. So how do you think they? I guess, first off, how do you think they've handled the contracts overall this season, and then also, what was your reaction to Tyson Campbell getting this money?

Speaker 2:

Well, see, the key with how they've handled the contracts this season that people should be mindful of, right is, they've taken care of and this will help them in the long run. They've taken care of and this will help them in the long run. They've taken care of the two most expensive positions, arguably three. Well, cornerback can get overshadowed by receivers, so disregard that. But the two most expensive positions on the field, that's your edge rusher, that's your quarterback. So that's one of the keys to take away from this. They, the most expensive contracts that they'll have to hand out, have been taken care of. They've done it. While, you know, trevor lawrence's is an extension and josh allen is more along the lines of a new contract, uh, still, nonetheless, they've taken care of the most expensive contracts there is to have in football, for their team at least. So that's a good thing, right and um. In terms of Tyson's contract, you know I would have waited on his contract. I probably would have maybe veered towards getting Cisco one, but it didn't. Again, like, if look at it this way, cisco could get a contract as well later down the road, before the season starts, and you know, we could have been in a situation where Tyson got his contract after Cisco. So the order don't really matter if both of them get paid in the same offseason. So I guess that won't matter in the end, but I would have taken care of Cisco first. Just because with Tyson, like you said, there is the down year. It's a little bit more of the unknown and it's like you know what, what Tyson are we getting? You know, are we getting the Tyson that we saw at the end of his rookie year and in the year we went to the playoffs, or are we going to see Tyson from last year, who, you know, obviously was beat up? Obviously there's this to think about. Maybe, you know, tyson would have took a stance of like hey, I'm not touching the field, and Travis Hone kind of pointed Travis Hones from SB Nation pointed this out you know, hey, I'm not taking the field until I get a new contract. So you know, maybe that's something to think about. Maybe we would have been talking about a contract dispute, but who knows? That being said, though, I'll never be mad at a team taking care of their own right.

Speaker 2:

I think Tyson Campbell, I think the team know what they're going to get out of Tyson Campbell, and kind of proof of that is you know how he started off training camp, even though he's been out with an ankle injury for the last. Well, he missed a few days with the ankle injury but he started off training camp hot. From all of the reports that are coming out of training camp, you know he's been the guy that's been blanketing Brian Thomas Jr, which we'll get on that, you know, in another podcast, and he's been a guy that really nobody's been trying Tyson Campbell in camp at all and it sounds like the secondary in general is having a good camp. But you know, if this is what they envision you know the Tyson Campbell that we're seeing in training camp then they were right to pay him, you know. So we'll see.

Speaker 2:

Time will tell if he earns, uh, you know, plays to his potential, uh, but he's a guy like I said, man like love his game when he's on. You know he has proven me wrong because when we drafted him, you remember I was one of the guys like I don't know man, I would have went a different direction, but he's proving me wrong when he's on and if we get the best of Tyson Campbell, you know that might be a deal where you can argue if you know he plays along the levels of a pro bowl or all pro lines. You can argue that he, you know he's underpaid. So you know, maybe the Jaguars did himself a favor here. We'll see.

Speaker 1:

In time we'll tell yeah, that's what I always think about is because you wait and then you find yourself in a situation, like you know, with Dallas. For some reason, you know, they keep finding themselves in situations where they end up having to pay more than what they would have originally had to pay. And I think of in another, in a totally different sport, my Dallas Mavericks. You know Jalen Brunson, now the star of the New York Knicks. At one point before he left for free agency, he came to the Dallas Mavericks and said, hey, this is what I want and we'll sign an extension. And you know, the rest would have been history. But I think maybe the hope is that this ends up being a steal pretty shortly down the road.

Speaker 1:

And you know, like it says here in in this article, shout out to the Jaguars wire and Zach Goodall, but seventh highest paid cornerback currently in the league. And you know, if he is on top of his game, like we saw in 2022, and you know blanketing the, the number one receiver on the other team and following them around and you know being a guy that quarterbacks and offensive coordinators need to be aware of, then yeah, top seven db money is about where he deserves to be now, like he said, you know, as I've gotten time to think about it, like you, I would have waited on this maybe a little bit longer, but certainly I am not against them paying their own and keeping people in house, as opposed to getting to a situation, jay, like you maybe alluded to, where there could have been dispute and all of a sudden we're starting all over again and I don't know how you feel, but I believe there was an article that came out recently as the Jaguars being a team that still probably needs to add a defensive back to their locker room. So having tyson campbell in house and, you know, hopefully having him healthy, but also having him paid and happy, I think is a good call. So what's your feel on the?

Speaker 1:

You know what I mentioned there, just the overall tone of the, the secondary right now. Like, how do you feel about the depth? Is there somebody out there that they should look into adding? I know they just added some, uh, some defensive players, but I don't believe any of them were dbs, I believe they were more so uh, linebackers as well as special teamers yeah, well, before I get into that, um, one thing I want to point out too.

Speaker 2:

Um, when you look at trevor's contract right and this could be the case for tyson sometimes you find out relatively quickly that you got a bargain right. You look at trevor's deal and then you look at what like christian kirk.

Speaker 1:

Look at that right there.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah um, you find out relatively quickly. Hey, oh man, like we, we got away with one there, kind of of, I guess, if you will, but with Trevor, right, you look at, like I had to pull up Tua's numbers. You look at Tua's number and Jordan Love's number and it's like dang, like they already have surpassed Trevor, you know, by I had to pull up the figures or whatever the case may be. So I don't want to say the contract, trevor's contract, is outdated. But it didn't take long for, you know people to throw around even more money to his position. And you know, maybe you find that out with Tyson Campbell, down the road where some other cornerbacks get paid, and it's like, oh man, like, yeah, we, we did get a bargain at the end of the day. And then, in regards of what you were saying before, that, yeah, rehash that again.

Speaker 2:

Just the secondary depth how you feel about it right now. Yeah, oh, yeah. Well, so the secondary depth, they kind of been the standouts, you know, of camp. So they kind of proved me wrong. Like, heading into camp, yeah, I was like, yeah, get another cornerback. You know, and I still feel this way about the edge rusher position and we'll talk about that later, but that's another topic for another time. Like you know, go get Yannick or somebody like that.

Speaker 2:

But really the defensive backs have not really just from everything out of camp, have not really been that much of an issue. You know, it was to the point where people were starting to question Trevor Lawrence, right, but Ronald Darby has been just fine, which you know. I never really doubted Darby. Remember I was saying the only issue with him is can he stay healthy? But when I popped in that Ravens tape of him because I forgot Ronald Darby was in the league and when we signed him I was like Ronald Darby still playing popped in the Ravens tape, I was like, yeah, ronald Darby still playing and he's playing at a high level. So, um, he's been solid. Darnell Savage is holding down the slot. You know the nickel position, which Doug Peterson even called him out by name as an alpha for the defense, like when you talk in alpha you talk about, like foyer, aluakan and stuff like that. So you know, darby's been fine, savage has been fine, as we already said, like they're not even really throwing at tyson, that's how good he's been.

Speaker 2:

So, um, you know, I don't know if they are, you know, overachieving at the moment, right now, but everything that we're seeing right now shows that that position, that group as a whole, might be better than we think Now. Again, you know we got to see how it goes. The pass just went on like two days ago. So we'll see how it goes with the pass on and what have you. And we'll look into the preseason as well, see how everybody's looking then. But so far, so good from them. Even you're hearing stuff, even though he's injured right now, but like Dewey, wingard got two picks in one practice. So they are far from an issue. If you're going by what the opening days of training camp have been about. They're far from the any.

Speaker 1:

You know, they're far from the top of the list of issues for the Jacksonville Jaguars yeah, the uh Jaguar Twitter was buzzing about Dewey Wingard and those interceptions and, uh, what the offense was looking like. And, like you said, we're we're waiting, uh, maybe another week or two to talk about training camp takeaways, as we, like I said, we do want to attend in person once we get a chance. But we will be covering all of that very soon. You know over the time, jay, that we have been doing this podcast in multiple iterations. I've just learned to take everything you see and hear with a grain of salt. Let everything play out and don't overreact. And that's easier said than done, especially when you're hearing and seeing things from training camp that are very worrisome. But you just got to relax and wait till Sundays and the pads are on, because things that you saw may not be as good or as bad as you thought they were. But, yeah, good for Tyson, super happy for him in terms of getting that money and hoping that he lives up to that, and we certainly believe that he'll have a bounce back year in 2024. Jay, let's move on to our final topic of the episode, and that is the NFL Top 100 list, still ongoing at the time of this recording.

Speaker 1:

Just as a reminder, we're recording here on July 31st and two players from the Jaguars have made appearances on this list and we're going to talk about both of them here. First off, we had Jaguar quarterback Trevor Lawrence coming in at number 94, which is a two-spot jump from his position last year, which was 96. And here on the NFL website it says although the Jags saw a late season collapse, it's no surprise that the team cashed in on the former Clemson star after Lawrence led the franchise to its first back-to-back winning seasons since 2004-2005. The Jaguars locked up the 2021 number one overall pick with a five-year $275 million contract. Lawrence is one of the brightest young passers in the NFL, but a 21-14 touchdown-to-interception ratio needs to improve in 2024. Definitely will give them that needs to improve in 2024. Definitely will give them that. I think a lot of us believe. If Trevor had been healthy down that final stretch, we would be having very different conversations and he would also be much higher on this list.

Speaker 1:

What happens with this list every year, jay, is not necessarily where players end up being ranked right. It's who is ranked ahead of them, like, I believe, last year, lamar Jackson was ranked behind some pretty questionable quarterbacks and I don't have them off the top of my head, but I remember that coming up quite a bit. Trevor Lawrence ranked 94th amongst his peers in terms of the NFL Top 100, is two spots behind New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who played the equivalent of one song on an album last season, and obviously a lot of this will. When it comes to this voting, you know people are taking past success into account and I totally get that. But Aaron Rodgers was barely around for a cup of coffee last season after tearing his Achilles four snaps into the season and somehow got ranked two spots ahead of Trevor Lawrence.

Speaker 1:

So group all that together. I said a lot here. Talk about Trevor's ranking at number 94. And then, obviously, the discourse around Aaron Rodgers being two spots ahead of him, rogers being two spots ahead of him, despite becoming a meme overnight, and that we still refer to today in terms of somebody not extending their welcome very long.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, so the unique thing about the top 100 list done by NFL Productions is this and I point to it all the time like who is voting on this? That's a very key factor on that, which is the players. So that means a lot that the players are voting on it. At the same time, when you go within that question of who is voting on this list, again it's all players. I think it's some players as well that we have to factor. This is, you know, like this is some kind of algorithm that daniel griffiths might have to come up with. Shout out to daniel griffiths, the best data guy in jaguars football. But you know who else, who within the player base is voting, and what I mean by that is you probably have some people that are voting that aren't. You know, within the top 100 and far far from top 100 players as well. They get a vote in there. I don't know, we'll have to see and time will tell, but that'll that's always been an interesting part about it. It's like the players vote for this. That means a lot, you know, in terms of the players that's on the list. Your own peers think highly of you and with Aaron Rodgers, clearly that's the case. You know, even though he took one snap, you know he got a significant amount of votes. You know they all, like I think they had the players sit down and write a list down of their top 20 players, or something like that, and they tally them up at the end of the day and that's how they decide who's the top 100, if I can recall so obviously a lot of people put Aaron Rodgers on that list that they give you, that NFL productions give you when they're asking these players, when you know they are asking these players this and you know, like, as the OG quarterback that still has the arm talent a lot of times that will overshadow your injury history or whatever the case may be. So that's probably something that's being taken into effect. Or what if? What if a lot of the people that got to vote on this? What if they play it for the New York Jets? That's something to consider. You know what I'm saying. Maybe that's how he got on the list, who knows? But yeah, that's certainly interesting.

Speaker 2:

I don't care if I was a player right In respect to what the players do, you know, and them putting their bodies on the line and all that, but somebody who played one snap, like you're not going on my top 20 list. I'm sorry, no, like that, that belongs to people and that's not a knock on Aaron Rodgers, but I would much rather put and give some notoriety to people who actually played more than one snap on the field this year. You know, because it is the top 20 list of 2024. And you are factoring in. You know what the player looked like in 2023. So you know me personally. I don't know, like I couldn't put Aaron Rodgers on my list. You know just, I could put them on my all time greats list, but in terms of what he did last year, you know that spot belongs to somebody else, but that's neither here or neither there.

Speaker 2:

In terms of Trevor, again going back to what I was saying, it speaks volumes of what the players think of Trevor Lawrence, and this is despite him, you know, missing what you know, three games and playing through the injuries. That shows me that the players know, like that, Trevor Lawrence is a bona fide quarterback and the reason that's important is because there's this discourse on social media that he's not and that he's getting paid. You know, according to the shady McCoy, I think it was or what he did at, or or no, it was Acho um for what he did at Clemson, and obviously this is egg on his face, because players in the league that actually are playing right now not that used to play like Acho, believe Trevor Lawrence is legit. So this is you know, this is more so something that people like Acho should consider Right, and this is something that the people on Twitter should, more so, consider.

Speaker 2:

The people that actually matter, that play the game, that see this man week in and week out, believe Trevor Lawrence is a top 100 quarterback. So, that being said, I'm cool with it because it shuts down all of this discourse on Twitter. You know these, you know aggregators and want to be football analysts that only watch their team and nothing more, that want to say Trevor Lawrence isn't good. Well, guess what? The man that puts his body on the line weekly, the men that put their line, their bodies, on the line weekly, think differently and they think Trevor Lawrence is, you know, in an elite class of players, enough to where he is the top 100 player, one of the best quarterbacks in the game yeah, we certainly don't want to give acho any spotlight that he doesn't deserve that whole crew really.

Speaker 1:

Uh, for the most part over there and whatever that show is called, um on fuck sports doesn't really deserve very much attention.

Speaker 2:

But yeah, we Wait, wait, wait, wait, phil, wait, wait. Shout-outs to Joy Taylor, though. That's all I'll say.

Speaker 1:

Oh, yeah, obviously Joy Taylor doing her thing. We will always stan Joy Taylor, but yeah, the rest of that crew don't really need to acknowledge them. But the Aaron Rodgers thing was wild to see unfold and obviously social media had a field day. And, yeah, definitely expect to see Trevor higher on this list this year. Certainly agree that the touchdown to interception ratio needs to improve, but hey, he got on the list here again and we just hope to.

Speaker 1:

Uh, you know, and we're just looking forward to him silencing those critics that were a little puzzled by him getting the payday that he did. Uh, all we have to do, jay, is go back to that conversation we just had about this deal eventually most likely being, uh, you know, a pretty good one. Uh, probably not too far down the road. I mean, dac prescott is set to get probably a minimum of 60 million dollars in in the offseason next year from somebody, whether it be the dallas cowboys or not, and if there is a bidding war, it's going to be more than 60 million dollars. I'll tell you that right now, especially if he has another solid regular season. Obviously, the the postseason is a different story when it comes to him, but yeah, oh trevor, coming in.

Speaker 2:

Tell you, man, I don't want to cut you off I can already tell you. I can smell the loomis brinks or whatever company they use in las vegas. I can smell the money from the trucks right now backing up from the las vegas raiders facility to pay Dak Prescott. I can smell it all the way here in Georgia right now, you know. So, yeah, I'm just I'm joking a little bit kind of, but I could see Vegas or somebody like that paying them some crazy money because, yeah, you would think Dallas would want to go with Trey Lance. You know, see what they got in the younger guy, and maybe they're just tired of this back and forth with Dak too as well. But I don't know how you feel about that, but do you see, do you believe that, uh, dak could be a Raider down the road?

Speaker 1:

absolutely, yeah, I can see that happening, isn't it the Patriots that have a whole bunch of cap space? Right, they keep getting tied to Brandon Ayuk. Obviously they have Drake May, but you know, uh, what if he comes out there and all of a sudden you know he doesn't look so great and uh, dak Prescott becomes available? Right, you know, I, I certainly wouldn't put it against them with all that money they have. But, yeah, I think the Raiders makes a whole lot of sense, uh, you know, either way, uh, somebody is going to get a quarterback that's just going to be fantastic in the regular season and disappear in the postseason. So, you know, good for him for securing that bag. But Dak Prescott, I think, has shown us what he is when it matters the most, what he is when it comes to when it matters the most. But that's not going to stop someone from throwing a, like you said, jay, backing up the brinks truck or whatever truck it is that they need to. But, yep, trevor lawrence comes in at number 94 and we have one other appearance here of a jacksonville jaguar on that list and that is the one and only josh allen hines, who came in at number number 35. This is his first appearance on the top 100 list. The nflcom blurb here is prove it years will henceforth fear him. Hines allen went into last season on his fifth year rookie option and came out of it with more sacks than he had managed the previous three campaigns combined. His 17.5 sacks trailed only TJ Watt and he added 66 tackles, 33 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles and an interception for good measure, and the Jags rewarded him with a contract through 2028, averaging $28.3 million a year.

Speaker 1:

Obviously, the other news that came out about Josh Allen Hines here in the month of July that we missed, or that we didn't miss but we hadn't gotten to discuss yet was that he legally changed his name as a tribute to the maternal side of his family, which he announced back in the beginning of July. He said quote legacy is forever and I'm proud to carry that tradition on the back of my jersey, following in the footsteps of my family who have donned the Heinz Allen last name with so much pride and joy. He said in a statement, and I'll be honest, like this was such a cool move for him. For those of you that do not know, I was adopted, but I was adopted by a member of my family, so everybody in-house is all my real family, all my blood relatives. That's how I ended up with the name Smith, even though I am full Filipino. Obviously, a lot of people ask questions about that has thrown around the idea of hyphenating my name just to be a little bit closer to my culture and where I came from and having a little bit more of a connection with my other loved ones. You know have more quote-unquote traditional Filipino last names.

Speaker 1:

This is something that I had a lot of admiration for when it came to JHA's decision, and you know it's empowering to have ownership of a name and to want to leave a legacy. I think is it's really one of the only things we truly have control over, right, jay? Like one of the things that in a in a book I read by my one of my favorite actors, one of my favorite Broadway actors and just actors overall, in Leslie Odom Jr from Hamilton fame. You know he talked about one of the one of the greatest things you have control over is control over your no things that you can say no to, and then I equate that also to having control over your name. You know what I mean and this powerful message by him to you know, and also that he is not the first person in his family to represent this name.

Speaker 1:

I believe he has a sister that plays for the Washington Mystics, as well as a couple other relatives, I believe, sisters that play collegiate sports. But this was such a cool move by him and I definitely respect him for it and admire him for it. So it's a cool thing that he was able to do and glad that he got the respect that he deserves in terms of his ranking here Jay at number 35. Could he be a little bit higher? Or you know, what do you think about his ranking there? One thing is for sure super happy for him to find, you know, I assume is a little bit of peace and you know and pride when it comes to the name change for Josh Hines Allen.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, congratulations on him for the name change. You know, I know about how legacy can mean a lot for you. You know, just with my father passing and my mother passing, so you know, legacy is like super important in my household and upholding your parents name and your grandparents name and all of that so uh, yeah, I don't have any of my grandparents anymore either. So, yeah, no, like he gets all the respect in the world for that. And you know, when you talk about, like you know, his sister, who you know she does Well, he does now as well, but she was done in the last name Hines Allen before him, and you know the impact that she's had on the family in terms of, you know, her contribution in the sports community and just getting her family's name out there. And I think he had some other family members, as you said, um, like even before his sister, like that have had, you know, their hands in in professional sports too, if I'm not mistaken. Um, so, yeah, just wanted to uphold that legacy. That makes a lot of sense, all of the sense in the world, for Josh Hines Allen and, um, yeah, I'm happy for him from for that perspective. And you know another thing to factor in there, you know he, we see his kids all the time, you know. So you know he wants to have that legacy in place too, for his kids to witness too, probably, and you know them to carry the torch from him too as well. So shout outs to him for that.

Speaker 2:

And in terms of the top 100, I mean I think he could have been moved up a little bit more into the 20s, but the 30s is fine. I guess. Anytime you're talking about somebody who has 17 sacks, that alone should get him, you know, 25th at the least. You know what I'm saying, but at the same time you can't be shocked, because he does play for the Jaguars, right and um, a lot of times. You have to be like which he is, but you have to not only be super elite to get known as a Jaguar, but also super flamboyant. I think Jalen Ramsey is a testament of that right. He had both of those traits and I think, if you know, josh Allen was a little bit more like flamboyant and out there in interviews and um, you know more, much more of a noise talker like Jalen Ramsey was. He would move, he would be moved up a little bit and, if I'm not mistaken, jalen Ramsey is the highest player ranked for the Jaguars ever in the top 100. I think Jalen was ranked like in the teens, like maybe 18 or something. So yeah, I mean it helps to have to be a bit of a talker too with it. If you're going to play for the Jaguars, at least it's a little easier for everybody else. They can go off of performance.

Speaker 2:

But uh, nonetheless, man, um, I was wondering the whole time like man, where is josh allen gonna show up on the excuse me, joshua hines allen gonna show up on his top 100 list? I was getting a little worried. I was like man, they finna leave my boy off the list, man. But eventually they got to him, glad to see him on the list.

Speaker 2:

And yeah, man, like, if you look at him here at training camp, the pictures they they've been showing of him in training camp, man, that guy looks like an absolute tank again this year. Him and Trayvon Walker, like they literally look like you remember the movie Space Jam, phil? They look like the Monstars, like on the edge out there. Man, like it's kind of funny when looking at them. In comparison to the interior guys, it's like wow, like they're not that far off from some of the guys in the interior.

Speaker 2:

Uh. So yeah, man, I can't wait to see him um, you know improve upon this season and move up on this list. I think he has the ability to move up on this list, but if he's in 17 sack range again, I think we could say that some probably went wrong with the defense so we might not see him reach those numbers again, but despite that, I think he can perform at a high enough level that, despite the sack figures even though the sack figures might not hit that number in the future to where he can still be listed higher on the list.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, that said man, happy for him, and next year we're gonna have even more players on there, so yeah yeah, let's hope for a, like, a 12 and 12 or a 13 and 12 campaign from him and, uh, trayvon Walker right, that's what we're going to manifest. Uh, for Jalen Ramsey is ranked 25th this year. So, yeah, like you said, you know, maybe would have helped a little bit more if he was, you know, front and center. We have seen him doing a lot of media lately because of the name change and everything that has gone on with, you know, the contract situation, which is great.

Speaker 1:

But, yeah, probably would have benefited from a little bit of that trash talk that we saw from Jalen back in the day and I did look it up, jay, because I assumed it was 2018 where we had Jalen Ramsey ranked here. He was ranked number 17. Uh, that year in terms of the top 100 for the uh 20, actually hold on, let me, would this been, I guess, after? Yeah, so 2018, because that would have been after the 2017 season, right, so, yeah, so 2018. He was ranked number 17 and, jay, there is actually one jaguar player ranked higher than that. Do you want to guess who it was heading into 2018? Think about who was really impactful in 2017. Veteran leader 20.

Speaker 1:

Oh, calais campbell yep, yeah, he was right, yeah, how did I forget about that?

Speaker 2:

yeah absolutely, he got four sacks in one game. Yeah, of course he was.

Speaker 1:

He was up there, yeah yeah, calais campbell ranked 14th that year, so, uh, shout out to the mayor. He looks like he's probably been our, our highest ranked player, um. But, jay, as we, you know, we wrap up this episode we do want to mention um. So they've gotten up to the 20s on this year's list. So there are only 20 players left and we wanted you know we were just throwing around people that we were surprised weren't on this list, and the most obvious answer you pointed out um that I had was like oh yeah, obviously, why isn't he on this list? Who is that player and what? Where? Where the hell are they? Why didn't they take aaron rogers spot at number 92? What player is you know, for some reason missing off this top 100 list?

Speaker 2:

yeah, um, and another one came to mind too that should be on there, but evan ingram man, like evan ingram's on there talking about had a historic season yeah, like, come on, like what are we doing here?

Speaker 2:

man like aaron rogers is on the on the list over him. But yeah, I mean with evan, you know he's been on the montage, he's talking about josh allen and I like in the josh allen video how he said, um, when they asked him like who would you like basically rank as the top player on your team? Or he was saying who you believe? Uh, they, they asked him who does he believe should be on the list? And he was like oh yeah, for sure, josh allen, my josh allen, jacksonville josh allen. Um, so yeah, evan, at least he's done his part in terms of boosting up his teammates. And he talked highly on Trevor, or, you know, discussed Trevor in a high manner on his um montage too. Uh, but yeah, like, as you said, man, historic season for him, right plays in a Doug Peterson offense. So you know, like it shouldn't be no reason why people are overlooking Evan Ingram at the tight end position because, like, doug Peterson is like the tight end king of football in terms of offense. So yeah, that one kind of blew my mind.

Speaker 2:

I wasn't sure why he wouldn't at least ranked in, you know, top 80 in the 80 to 90 range, but you know well he'll be on there eventually, you, you know if he keeps up doing what he's doing. And also, the second one that came to mind and this is only because, um, you know, madden actually just recently released some rankings is travis etn. Yeah, absolutely, there's a guy that I mean, like he's had what a thousand yards in his last two season, like he literally is the closest thing you're going to get to Christian McCaffrey in terms of being an all around weapon, right. So for that reason, like I don't understand how he doesn't make the list either. So you know, he's another one of those guys that, as you mentioned, you know, we got to start looking at him and questioning like, oh man, when is it time to pay him to? Although he pays, he plays a position that the league doesn't respect a lot at least front offices don't. But you know we'll have that discussion on another day. But Travis Etienne man, just the all around guy, again, like for somebody who is the closest thing we have to Christian McCaffrey, who is not been listed on the list, I don't think yet or has shown up on the list yet, that's kind of telling um, and that that means that not only our front office disrespecting my guy, the rest of the league is, for that matter, and, um, yeah, you guys need to step up on your film study in the league because, um, he absolutely should be on there and I think he's going to have a pretty good season this year as well, especially, you know, if the Jaguars can implement Tank Batesby into this offense, like they want to, like they've been talking about they want to.

Speaker 2:

And also, too, you know that's one of the good things coming out of camp, right, is you know? Um, that's one of the good things coming out of camp, right, is you know? Mia has pointed this out me, o'brien from 1010xl shout outs to her. The holes for the run game have been better in camp. Now, granted, the pads haven't been on, but for two or three days, that's. You know that's a pretty good thing because, like you know, they got some guys in the trenches that have been playing pretty good in training camp, like Devon Hamilton, like Mason Smith, who's been balling out as well. So, uh, you know, hopefully that's a sign that Travis Etienne will have his best season, with the offensive line playing a little better, if that you trickles their performance trickles into the preseason and then the regular season.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Evan Ingram, Travis Etienne definitely both strange exclusions, especially considering the seasons they've had. And you know, like you mentioned, Jay, the Madden ratings. I think Travis Etienne is the fifth ranked, running back in the game at a 90 overall. I can tell you. You know, I don't know how much Madden 25 or whatever year is coming out this year, I don't know how much I'm going to be playing with college football out, but I can tell you his yeah, his ranking is pretty solid. Actually, Jay, while we were recording numbers, 20 through 10 have come out. Would you like to hear that? 20 through 11? I'm sorry, Would you like to hear those here while we're recording? Are you ready?

Speaker 2:

I would and also it's funny you mentioned college football Shout out to Travis's brother, Trevor Etienne. I've been cooking with him on NCAA Well, excuse me, college football 25. So shout outs to him Go Dawgs. And yeah, I look forward to him having a good season, but go ahead.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, all right. Here here is number 20. And you know, unfortunately we'll have to hear this name a lot because of the national media CJ Stroud comes in at number 20. Number 19 is Roquan Smith. 18 is Justin Jefferson. Last year he was ranked number two, so he dropped 16 spots. Micah Parsons ranked number 17, down from number nine in 2023. Dak Prescott jumps from 56 to 16 this year. Jalen Hurts drops from three to 15. Number 14 is George Kittleittle, up from 19 in 2023. Ceedee Lamb is up to number 13 from number 34 in 2023. Josh Allen the only Josh Allen now number 12. He was number eight last year. And Fred Warner is up to number 11 from 15 in 2024. So there you have it, jay. More understandable infatuation with, obviously, the QB there in Houston. But what about the rest of those rankings? Any standouts that you want to mention?

Speaker 2:

before we wrap up this episode yeah, of course I got to go to the Georgia Bulldog, roquan Smith, holding us down. As low-key you could put Georgia, they probably don't fit into conversation like maybe like Penn State maybe, or UNC or USC, should I say. But, like you know, shout outs to Roquan Smith for holding us down, for potentially being linebacker university as well, because you know we are a running back university but we've had some good linebackers come up out of Georgia too as well. So, yeah, he, you know he more than deserves his ranking. He's an absolute force.

Speaker 1:

And he's up five spots too, from 24 last year. So he went up by five.

Speaker 2:

He should be as he should be. He's a guy that you know. You could tell he was a standout in Georgia, that he was going to be one of the better players in football when he was drafted and you know the Ravens have an eye for talent. So I am not shocked that you know he's standing out. Fred Warner I love his game too. Since we're on the subject of linebackers, if you haven't popped in any tape of Fred Warner, please do, especially young kids especially. You can learn a lot from him. But I love his tape, love his game too.

Speaker 2:

Tired of hearing about CJ Stroud, but this podcast we did warn people right, um, especially me that when they were having that conversation about those three quarterbacks that were taken in the same draft class with him, everybody was like oh, who do you take first? I was like CJ Stroud. Next question and you know he's proven that he was the guy that should have been taken first out of all of those quarterbacks. So you know, unfortunately we might hear about him more. Then again, if this pass rushes and this defensive line is, you know, looking like they're looking at training camp, maybe we can get to him a little easier this year. We'll see, but yeah, you know, those are the two. That I wanted to talk on really was the two linebackers, because they are the two that I'm most familiar with, just looking at their tape in, like their postseason stuff yeah, you got three cowboys uh here in the 11 through 20 as well cd, micah and dac.

Speaker 1:

Uh, were you a little surprised to see cd over? Uh, justin jefferson, I don't know. Did justin jefferson didn't have a down year or anything last year? Did he, was he? I don't know, did Justin Jefferson didn't have a down year or anything last year? Did he, was he? I don't remember him being hurt.

Speaker 2:

Um, in terms of like, I mean, I believe oh yeah, he had.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, he was out for half the season.

Speaker 2:

Okay, never mind yeah, yeah, so I was right on that field. Yeah, he was out. It looks like he was out for half a season with the injury. Justin Jefferson was so that's right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, I remember now he still had 68 catches for over a thousand yards right and we'll never, we'll never let it go right.

Speaker 2:

Remember that draft. You know where we would say take especially me screaming, take justin jefferson.

Speaker 1:

And we ended up with chase on um yeah good carolina panthers legend caleb on chase on uh loading.

Speaker 2:

Sorry, there you go, enjoy that yeah 68 catches 1074 yards last year for justin jefferson in a season where he missed half the year is insane production yeah, hey, you know what it's funny you mentioned I've been watching him on um receivers on the netflix documentary so yeah, like he's a guy that he's fun in terms of what he does on the field, but also like just getting to know justin jefferson, the person out the field, I was like, okay, he's pretty interesting uh. But yeah, I mean that makes sense to put cd over him. And of course there's always going to be an infatuation with the cowboys because they're america's team, even though, like you said, you kind of said this with that when it counts the most they don't show up. But not surprised that three cowboys, or you know, within that 10 to 20 range as well.

Speaker 2:

I do like Michael Parsons' game a lot too. You know he was a guy that you can't help but notice him when he's on the field, right? You remember when we went to the Cowboys Jazz game. If I'm not mistaken, he was a standout in that game. That game was such a blur because we were coming off from such a high on how that ended. But yeah, shout-outs to him as well. Man, you can't sit here and argue that he shouldn't be in there because yeah, he's just a guy that just commands a lot of attention from offensive lines and offensive coordinators.

Speaker 1:

So yeah, in terms of your initial question, not shocked at all that CD Lamb was ranked jefferson just because of the injury and him having to go on ir yeah, definitely, uh deserves to get paid and I'm not sure what the cowboys are doing as he is not reported to training camp because he's waiting on that contract, even though uh, literally it's been laid out for them in terms of what he deserves to get because of all the other receiver contracts that have come through. But, jay, we're going to wrap up there. Great episode. Happy to be back again as we turn the corner into August, as we will get back to our typical weekly schedule here for the Touchdown Jaguars podcast. Anything else you want to mention to our audience before we wrap up and focus on the next episode?

Speaker 2:

No, we pretty much covered it. Yeah, it was good to get back in the booth and, you know, talk some Jaguars, even though we really didn't talk training camp like that. So we'll get into that later. So, yeah, I can't wait to dive into that and just, you know, dive into it after you know more padded practices are have have taken place. That way we can have a, you know, better evaluation of what's going on. Um, but yeah, as I always say at the end of each podcast, feel free to check us out on touchdownjadwarscom. Uh, feel free to rate, comment, subscribe to the podcast. Archived episodes will always be on the podcast. They go on there the moment. We update them to our platforms, whether that's Apple, spotify, whatever the case may be. And yeah, man can't wait to start talking some preseason football.

Speaker 1:
