Touchdown Jaguars!
Episode 99: Bears/Jaguars Week 6 Analysis - Jags Cultural Issues Come to Light in the UK
How can a team with so much potential find themselves in such a precarious position? Join me, James Johnson, for a solo episode on the Touchdown Jaguars podcast as I discussed the Jags' rocky path so far. From a disheartening 1-5 record to a tough loss against the Chicago Bears in London Sunday, I dissected the game's unexpected twists and what went wrong. We'll also delve into the off-field drama, including notable comments from owner Shad Khan and player Andre Cisco, alongside the implications of trading Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Jaguars' offensive woes continue to be a hot topic, and we leave no stone unturned. Trevor Lawrence's valiant efforts are juxtaposed against Evan Ingram's impressive return, while Gabe Davis's inconsistent play raises eyebrows. We'll question the curious roster choices, like favoring D'Ernest Johnson over Tank Bigsby, and the defensive penalties that paved the way for the Bears' victory. With Travis Etienne likely to sidelined due to injury, there's a spotlight on Tank Bigsby's opportunity to shine, and the importance of managing injuries to players like Tyson Campbell becomes ever more pressing.
Amidst the turmoil, we examine the bigger picture, questioning the Jaguars' cultural and managerial challenges. Are Doug Pederson and Trent Baalke the right leaders for this struggling team? Shad Khan's questionable support of the duo is put under the microscope, as we explore the potential need for a fresh start and new leadership. With Andre Cisco's candid insights, we paint a comprehensive picture of a team in need of transformation. As we edge closer to our milestone 100th episode, we remain committed to supporting the Jaguars community through these turbulent times.

James Johnson and Phil Smith bring you the best and most up to date Jacksonville Jaguars news. "Touchdown Jaguars!" is a tribute to the prospective ownership group "Touchdown Jacksonville!" In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams and "Touchdown Jacksonville!" announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists. In November 1993, the NFL owners voted 26–2 in favor of awarding the 30th franchise to Jacksonville. James and Phil have been fans of the franchise ever since and have had the honor (and sometimes dishonor) of covering the team professionally since 2017. The rest as they say, is history.
You Touchdown Jacksonville play action looking for jimmy in the end zone. Touchdown jaguars. Welcome to the touchdown jaguars podcast. Here your are your hosts, james Johnson and Phil Smith. All right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Touchdown Jaguars podcast. I am your host for today, riding this one solo, james Johnson.
Speaker 1:As you all know, I'm normally joined by my co-host, phil Smith, who had to miss out this week. He had to do some traveling this weekend and what have you. So I told him to not even worry about it and have to. You know, come home from traveling and then record. I let my guy know I can hold it down for this episode and, quite frankly, he didn't miss much. Right, because, as we all know here, on what was it?
Speaker 1:Week six, the Jacksonville Jaguars fell to the Chicago Bears over across the pond in the UK at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, to the Chicago Bears by a score of 35 to 16. And I mean really, what can I say, aside from? You know, they just added to the list of disappointments that we have seen on this year or that have occurred this year, putting them at a record of one in five, which nobody expected them to be there at this point of the season, but nonetheless, we will talk about the game and break that down, as well as we'll talk about some other things too, because you know, the game itself kind of, you know, was expected. I don't know if we expected them to get beat that badly, but it was expected. In terms of, you know, the jaguars, they were coming off the win with the Colts. I don't think anybody necessarily put too much into that win. When you look at the circumstances of the Colts and also just how the Jacksonville Jaguars ended that game, they almost gave it away, despite the Colts being understaffed and undermanned. So, you know, nobody really put a lot into it and thought something would come of it. And, as I said in last week's podcast, you know it was good to get a win, but we really couldn't take anything from that win for those reasons and it never really meant anybody was off the hook Right In terms of, or anybody should be off the hook in terms of, the regime there Doug Peterson, trent Baalke and what have you. So we're not completely surprised about the result being a loss, but more so I guess what we'll talk about when we do the game breakdown is how they lost is more so the big deal there.
Speaker 1:But we also have some other things to talk about, because the game itself wasn't the only notable event of the week in terms of there was some things said by shot come which we'll get into at the end of the episode. Some things said about shot con, who you know is doing media rounds. It's kind of rare that he does them, but when they go over there across the pond to london they do do media rounds with your first coast news is of the world and the Florida Times Union, and he made some interesting comments that are definitely noteworthy and need to be gone over or reviewed or discussed in this podcast made by a player in Andre Sisco some post-game comments made by Andre Sisco after we review the game as well, because, again, those are just as important kind of as what Shotgun said as well. So we got some media related comments and some media related stuff to go through this week as well, and also before we even get into the review. The first thing that I want to do is I want to go over some trade news that occurred this week, as Roy Robertson Harrison was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, and this comes after the Jaguars lost to the Bears, so you know he has to fly back to America and then fly to Seattle and so on and so forth. So the timing was kind weird, but I don't think we're like completely surprised or shocked by it. But you know that was some notable news that needs to be reviewed as well, that we'll discuss on this podcast too.
Speaker 1:But before we get into all of that, of course I need to plug the many outlets in which you can get connected with us through, most notably on Twitter. You can find me at sports grind underscore done on Twitter. You can find Phil at Phil the Filipino on Twitter, and the podcast is TD Jaguars pod. Again, that is TD Jaguars pod. Also, you can find us, or you can feel free to check out our website, touchdown Jaguarscom, which our archived episodes go to. Also, our episodes, of course, go to your favorite podcasting platforms, whether that's apple or whether that's spotify, whatever the case may be. We can be found everywhere and if we're not feel free to let us know, we'll get on your favorite podcasting platform and therefore keep you in the loop of what's going on and the latest in news with the Jacksonville Jaguars on a week-to-week basis, also, of course, before we get into the show at hand, as we always do have to plug our sponsor here, which is SeatGeek, who have pretty much been with us throughout most of the ride here with the Touchdown Jaguars podcast.
Speaker 1:For those of you who do not know, seatgeek is your go-to platform for your ticketing needs. Of course, we work from the sports realm right so you could get your whether it's Jaguar tickets or somebody else in the NFL, they got all. They got you covered for all 32 teams in terms of your ticketing needs there or in the sports realm in general, whether it's the NBA, which the NBA season is about to start there. You know in the preseason right now but it'll be um, it won't be too soon where we are watching official nba regular season games in the near future. They got you covered with your mlb stuff. I know.
Speaker 1:You know we're in the playoffs right now, so you know if you're trying to get a good deal on some playoff tickets, feel free to check um, to check outatGeek and see if they can help you with your needs there. And also outside of the sports realm, they have you covered where there's concerts or you know, whatever the case may be, feel free to go to SeatGeek, check it out and see if they can help you with your ticketing needs. And also, you can always use our code, which is touchdown Jaguars, for your first order on the website or the app. It'll work either way. Again, that's touchdown Jaguars and you'll save yourself $20 on your first seat geek order. So again, you know, with those playoff tickets they can get a little expensive. You know, at least save yourself $20. So you can get you, you know, some, some snacks or some food at the game, whatever the case may be. I know $20, so you can get you, you know, some, some snacks or some food at the game, whatever the case may be. I know $20 don't stretch a lot, but again, you know, we're just trying to help you get in there and get down there in a discounted rate.
Speaker 1:So, all of that said, let's get into the actual show and we will start, as I mentioned, with the Roy Robertson Harrison uh, roy Robertson Harris trade, as he was traded yesterday, on the 14th. I'm recording this on the 15th. I've been, I've been rather busy. Normally we try and record this as soon as possible, but excuse the delay on it. But on the 14th of October the Jacksonville Jaguars did go ahead and get rid of Roy Robinson Harris, who had been a little bit of a misfit under the new scheme. They're sending them to the Seattle Seahawks and what the Jaguars will be receiving in terms of compensation. According to Tom Pelissero and Ian Rappaport support and Mike Garofalo the big three with the NFL network the Jacksonville Jaguars will be receiving a 2026 six rounder. So that'll be what in two more years, basically that they'll get that, but I guess probably more so.
Speaker 1:The big deal here is that the Jacksonville Jaguars are, you know, getting a player out of here who didn't really fit the scheme, as I previously mentioned, and also to the. I guess the bigger deal is that they're getting his contract off of the books as well, which they, you know, recently gave him an extension in what was it? 2023. He signed in 2021. They gave him an extension like two years later, so that would have been, yeah, 2023. And it will help them from a cap perspective, even though they have to eat some dead salary cap for it. In 2024, they'll be eating three point five million in dead cap and in 2025, six point nine million.
Speaker 1:However, roy Robertson Harris, who, if I I can recall, was a former captain, uh now gets a breath of fresh air. Uh, gets to go to a team in which has a chance to go to the playoffs. They currently are sitting at three and three and that ties them with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West um, and I think the Cardinals might have to win. So they're just below that. But you know he goes to a team that you know has a chance to go to the playoffs and we wish him the best of luck in that process.
Speaker 1:So, all of that said, I guess what I would say is the story, more so with Roy Robertson Harris, is something we'll talk about later when we get into the shotgun comments, but you know it just further drives home the point that Trent Baalke needs to be out of here. This is a guy that Trent brought in under the Urban Meyer regime when Urban Meyer was the head coach, liked him so much until, you know, they gave him an extension. So this is a guy that the Jaguars have given two contracts, have paid twice in terms of major contracts, and Trent Baalke signed off on that. And you know, I get it. He's not a scheme fit with the current scheme, but, as we mentioned earlier in a podcast, it might have been two or three podcasts ago, but you know, according to I think it was Pete Prisco, correct me if I'm wrong, but according to Pete Prisco, you know Trent Baalke had a lot to do with Ryan Nielsen coming in and even, if I can recall, sat in on the interviews with Ryan Nielsen. The new defensive coordinator sat in on those interviews and what have you? And you know the importance of that is not only you know that, according to, you know somebody who was connected to the jaguars, or well, connected to the jaguars was it your choice to bring in nelson? But also, to you know, early in the stages of him coming in, you had the opportunity to understand the scheme and schematics that he would bring and you willingly brought him in, knowing what you had just paid Roy Robertson Harris in terms of an extension and knowing that he might be a misfit for this scheme. So it's kind of not making sense from that perspective, but still, this just shows you how unorganized things have been that Trent Baalke has placed his hands on here. You have a guy who he has paid twice and now he's sending him out of here. So the puzzling decisions continue and you know it'll be interesting to see if this leads to what Phil labeled as like a garage sale or whatever the case may be, I don't know, like they could be. You know Demetrius was saying Demetrius of the Florida times union, shout out to him. We're saying that like they're. You know they're playing for their jobs still. So you know, this move to trade Roy Robertson Harrison doesn't necessarily mean that a garage sale is coming. But you know, we'll see in time We'll tell. One thing is for sure that October and November are going to be interesting months for the Jacksonville Jaguars and what they decide to do in terms of the mess that they have on their hands with Trent Baalke and Doug Peterson. So that was the first topic at hand that I wanted to discuss.
Speaker 1:Next we will get into the game itself. I'll pull up the box score here. As I said earlier, the Jacksonville Jaguars fell to the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by a score of 35 to 16. This is just one of two UK games that they will play, uk games that they will play. Of course they will be going to the Wembley Stadium for the next game, which is technically the Jazz home in UK. I know a lot of people don't like to say that, but technically it is and that will be their home game. They will play the New England Patriots, who have recently made a change with Drake May, but I digress from my point. We'll talk about that next week.
Speaker 1:In terms of what happened this week and the catastrophe that took place on the field this week or on Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars fell to the Chicago Bears and it was another one that just left Jacksonville Jagadwars fan just eager for the season to end. In terms of the statistics, we'll just briefly go through them. Trevor Lawrence was 23 or 25, had a pick through two touchdowns probably should have had more touchdowns, which we'll get into in a little bit as well, so he led the way there. Mac Jones got into the game, but he only got one pass off, so no significant stats from him. In terms of the rushing, dearnest Johnson led the way for. The Jacksonville Jaguars had six carries for 28 yards, which that's a topic in itself that Daniel Griffiths actually brought up, being that, you know, dearnest, actually I'll have to go back and look at the tweet, but I think Dearness got more snaps than Tank Bigsby, which absolutely makes no sense, and we got to get Daniel Griffiths back on this show. By the way, he's good with the numbers and statistics man Shout outs to him. But Tank Bigsby wasn't far behind seven carries for 24 yards.
Speaker 1:One of the standouts of the game, despite how it went, evan Ingram. He returned from his hamstring injury that he sustained um some weeks ago during pre-game warm-ups. Um, he led the way with 10 receptions for the Jacksonville Jaguars for 102 yards and and he didn't come away with a touchdown, but his impact was definitely felt. Again, you know, I know a lot of people will probably say hey, you know, the game got out of hand at some point. But even when the game was in hand, he helped the Jaguars with some key conversions and moving the ball down the field. Not too far behind him was Gabe Davis.
Speaker 1:We'll talk about him a little bit. He did all in two touchdowns. Should have had more than that but, hauled in two touchdowns, had five receptions for 45 yards. Brian Thomas Jr couldn't quite get going like he had been, you know, leading into this game. He lefta touchdown on the field because he dropped one as well, but he registered three receptions for 27 yards. And then, on the defensive end, um, I guess this won't come as a surprise, but leading the way in tackles was ventrell miller. He got double digit tackles with 10 and uh, you know he's a guy that just continues to be around the ball um, although the Bears did put up 35 points on it.
Speaker 1:So, in terms of just getting into a review of this game, I think, when you look at how things went offensively, what I will say is that it felt like Trevor Lawrence did everything within his power and, you know, he kind of used the momentum from the previous game, but he did everything in his power to get the jaguars a win. Now, of course, as I said, he had a pick earlier. Um, at that point it was probably because he was pressing, you know, trying to overcompensate, for you know what had been going on and just make up what was a gap in the score and come from behind. But again, you don't want to let him off the hook completely, but it feels like that is what happened, because previously he was putting the ball where it needed to be and I think the story of the game was there were a lot of drops in this game, some of which that came when the game was within reach.
Speaker 1:Now, some of them came when the game was out of reach as well, but the first, most crucial drop was in the first drive offensive drive of the game where Gabe Davis did drop. One hit him square in the hands and I get it. You know his vision of the ball may have been impaired slightly by a defender that was really close to breaking that up, but as an NFL caliber receiver, if it hits you in your hands or your chest you got to come down with it. You know, and Kurt Warner even said it too, who was commentating with Rick Rich Eisen at the time, like that's why you got to have and that's what has played the Jacksonville Jaguars throughout this process of the 2024 season. He also he dropped one where it was a deep pass and you know he might have been at the two or three when he caught it. Trevor Lawrence put it on his outside shoulder, you know, near the front pylon, not the back pylon but the front pylon, and you, you know that one went through gabe's hands as well, right, you know, and that was a big play that could have helped the jaguars.
Speaker 1:Now when the second drop occurred, I believe they were. You know the game was kind of getting out of hand, but the jaguars needed some explosive plays at the time. You know some quick scores at the time and you know time was an issue at that time. So this play would have really helped if they have even had a chance of a comeback, but again it resulted in a drop. So there was that play, and I mean just flat out. You know we got to call it what it is. You know and we talked about Trent earlier and the Roy Robinson Harris situation that's one of the free agents he brought in.
Speaker 1:Gabe Davis is another one that he's brought in that just quite hasn't been able to make the plays that the Jags have needed again. Yeah, sure, he got the two touchdowns that we mentioned, but you know he left two on the field too, or at least one on the field. You probably would think that second one he dropped that I mentioned is a touchdown as well. So you know he left 14 points on the field and you know you add that to the jaguars total and what are we at? There are 30 points. Right game is within reach. So for the time being and I know you know we're only in week six, but it looks like that money is being wasted that was going towards Gabe Davis.
Speaker 1:Now, look man, he has all the motivation in the world, aside from his contract, to turn it around, get things right. You know, because you know he's playing for. You know, essentially, the team that he grew up watching. You know he's a, you know he's from Fernandina Beach, not too far from Jacksonville, so you know things could turn around and you're certainly rooting for him. But at the time being that connection between him and Trev hasn't been what they paid for. I guess is how I would put it. And if it continues at this rate, this is just another thing to add to that list of issues.
Speaker 1:With Trent Baalke, the the rotation of receivers that have come through here. Right, he's tried everything to fix that position. Brought in Ridley let him go to the Titans brought in a veteran in, marvin Jones, who you know eventually you know he played what two years with the team and then he was gone. Now you have Gabe Davis who we're questioning. Of course he'll be here, you know, in the near future because of his contract. But now we're questioning if he's an answer at the quarterback, at the wide receiver position as well.
Speaker 1:And of course you know the one hit that Trent has had at the receiver position and we talked about this before he drafted brian thomas. His history at receiver is terrible. Brian thomas is the one exemption where he's actually made the right move, and you can argue that the titans kind of swooped in and helped him to make that right decision. Of all teams the titans, right, we talked about that last week. But the titans helped him make that decision when they swooped in and got calvin ridley at the last minute, who is not doing too well for them as well. So they're paying him a lot of money and he's not bringing in the results that he was hoping for or that they were hoping for.
Speaker 1:But what I'm saying is, if really doesn't get picked up by the Titans, we don't have the best receiver that Trent Baalke has ever drafted, you know, and he's been doing this for a very, very long time, at least since 2009 on the professional level, right. So that's telling of just his struggles at the wide receiver position. And Gabe Davis is now another one to add on that list, and you know we can go into next year still saying we need receivers, right? Christian Kirk is a guy that you have to wonder is a trade candidate with his salary and what have you. So we don't know if he's a long-term answer or how long he'll be around. We're back to square one where we were when Trent Baalke was with Urban Meyer and, in his beginning stages, with Doug Peterson, wondering who are the receivers of the future for this team. We have one in Brian Thomas Jr. His spot is solidified for the future, but aside from him there are question marks. So that just goes all into what I was saying about. You know, poor evaluations at that position.
Speaker 1:Now, on the Dearness thing and Tank Bixby thing, I'm not sure again. I think Daniel said that Dearness got more snaps than Tank. Not sure why that happened, but I would think, heading forward, I think we're going to see more of Tank because ETN is now dealing with a hamstring injury. He's week to week and I would think they don't want to push him next week after he sustained the hamstring injury, because hamstring injuries are really tricky and you know they take time. Now it might not be anything severe, but it just wouldn't be smart to put him in a game the week after he sustained the injury. It's one of those things that if it is week to week, you got to be smart with it, because you don't want to put him out there on the field and make it a situation where he's dealing with the injury even longer. So you would think that Tank Biggs be will get a majority of the snaps. The earnest will be backing him up and then they'll probably get somebody off a practice squad heading forward. I mean they didn't IR Travis necessarily, but that that's not to say that he will play. You know he very well be ruled out for the game and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. That's not me having any insight or information or anything, but I'm just saying that you know a smart coach would sit Travis Etienne, at least for this week, and you know time will tell if that's the case.
Speaker 1:It was good in terms of what I was saying about Evan Ingram good to have him back. Will tell if that's the case. It was good in terms of what I was saying about Evan Ingram, good to have him back. I think he'll really help Trevor heading forward. Don't know how many wins that'll translate to, because this team is just disjointed, but it was good to see him come back and I'm glad they took their time with bringing him back from his injury, which was a hamstring injury too.
Speaker 1:And that kind of just kind of further makes the point that I was making for ETN. Take your time with those kinds of injuries. You could get a person back or you can get a player back full speed if you do so. So we'll monitor the situation with ETN. But I'm certainly glad that you know Evan Ingram was back and I think they might be getting Tyson Campbell back soon from his hamstring injury. Again, you know you got to take it slow with those injuries. You don't rush the player back. I know the Jaguars could really use him, but having Tyson Campbell back isn't going to really veer this team from the path they're on. At this point they're one and five right and they've gotten blown out by two teams. So you know you don't have to rush him back. Is the point I'm making there.
Speaker 1:And then on the defensive side, I think the story more so was just the. It was this one stretch where the Jacksonville Jaguars could not get the Bears off of the field and it was because you know they were in third down situations where the Bears were supposed to be packed up and going to the sideline. The Bears offense at least, and you know, because of penalties and I think two of them were Ronald Darby the Bears were given second chances and, if I can recall, that led to the Bears getting a touchdown eventually. So I mean that kind of stuff can't happen. Three third downs, that you allow the Bears to come back on the field when they could have been punting or you could have made them settle for a field goal, is that just goes to show you how this season has gone for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 1:And then you know you have Ronald Darby, who's a guy I actually praised and I thought he was going to play better than he did and better than he has after just looking at how he looked with the Baltimore Ravens. But he doesn't look nowhere close to that guy and he's just another free agent that Balky brought in. That you know, if you had an owner that not even necessarily understood football, but just an owner with just common business tact, right, right, that's something that you would notice. Right Is that? You know, this is another free agent that was brought in that you obviously thought would start a material Trent Baalke. And he's not right, he's hurting the team, he's costing the team and he's costing the team in a big way. And not to mention just, you know, not just him, but how much has Eric Armstead helped this team.
Speaker 1:Right, that's another free agent acquisition they brought in as well on the defensive side. That was coming from a team T-Wig says this all the time that they brought in from a team with the winning culture, something that they've kind of emphasized. He came from the 49ers. That has been, for the most part, ineffective as well. That has been for the most part ineffective as well. We all seen the clip of him bear crawling during, you know, some pursuit of Caleb Williams, where it was just like a flat out laughable clip, but you know he hasn't been effective and a lot of it is too. They're using them at defensive end. That man is not a defensive end with a four man front. Like, let's call it what it is.
Speaker 1:But again, that goes back to like, how were these discussions not had? If Trent Baalke had so much input or so much say, according to Pete Prisco at least how was this not discussed and not looked at and reviewed and considered when these conversations were going down with Ryan Nielsen before he was hired and when he was interviewed? Right? How are we now at a place where but Eric Armstead is, you know, is your defensive end three, and seeing way too many snaps at the defensive end position, when we all know where his bread and butter is and where he's made his money. And that's the from the interior.
Speaker 1:Again, it just puzzles me and I'm just at a loss for words when looking at what's going on with these free agents that the Jacksonville Jaguars have brought in. So you know, this game was very telling of you know his performance, eric Armstead's performance and Ronald Darby's performance as well, and you know people are starting to really really come around to the conclusion that we wasted a lot of money this offseason and you know, of course, down the road you have to pay for it. So we'll see if those two guys can get things turned around. I mean, that's really their. All is to discuss with the game was, you know, the lack of ability for the defense to get the offense of the Bears off of the field and the several opportunities that they gave them and the opportunities that the Jaguars left on the field offensively through the passing game. So we'll see if they can clean that up against a young Patriots team, a young Patriots team that will be starting a young quarterback.
Speaker 1:I mean it would probably be best for the Jacksonville Jaguars to further make a statement. I don't know if Shotgun is going to be oblivious to the statement, but to further make a statement I don't know if Sean Cunn is going to be oblivious to the statement, but to further make a statement. It'd probably be best for them to lose that game to further make a statement that not only is Doug a guy that they need to get out of here, but Trent Baalke as well. But we'll see Crazy things happen in London. I wouldn't be shocked if they won the game because of just how they play in London, especially at Wembley Stadium. But at the same time, you have to look at this Bears game and wonder if that will look like a crap show as well. I guess time will tell and we'll see on Sunday. All right, and also before we veer away from the game and the action that took place on the field Sunday Also, as I mentioned, I wanted to go back and discuss the comments that we've all seen.
Speaker 1:It's been making rounds on social media, whether it's Jack's Twitter or not, but just review or discuss the comments made by Safety Andre Sisko, who he was asked by Brent Martin of Action News, jack's about what took place on the field, saw on the field and, um, you know, brent was simply saying, like, hey, you guys are one in five and it should look way better than the product that you guys are putting out there on the field. And I'm just paraphrasing Brent here. But you know, andre Sisko, when asked you know about what he's seeing and what's going on on the field, andre then commented, you know he said a multitude of things, but the key thing that he came, that we came away with and that he said and I quote him and end quote him on this is a lot of quit, quote, unquote is what he saw and that it was very concerning um on his part. And you know those comments are just another gallon of gasoline to pour on how terrible this season has gone and you know the fire that is brewing currently in terms of what's going on with the Jacksonville Jaguars organization. And of course, in modern times we have the ability, we have, you know, all 22 film that we can access. I have an NFL network or NFL plus account myself and you know we could post these things on social media and we can go back and review it. But you know, of course clips have made the surface or have been surfaced on social media, where you know you can see what Andre Sisisco is talking about.
Speaker 1:Right, and one thing about playing safety people is you know he does have a good vantage point of plays developing and what's supposed to happen in terms of getting those plays stop, especially in the run game. So for that to come from him, that's pretty significant because the safety has a good arguably the best vantage point on a defense to see all 11 players In most cases. In most cases sometimes they're a little bit closer to the line of scrimmage, they can't see everything, but in most cases, you know, they have a good vantage point on seeing these things and it's so disheartening that we've gotten to this point. Right, and those comments don't help jazz fans to feel any better about what has been a crap show under doug peterson and trent balky. But those are the type of comments, right, that shot khan can't be oblivious to we mentioned earlier.
Speaker 1:We mentioned shot khan being oblivious. That's the kind of stuff that he can't be oblivious to, right and ignore and allow to happen again. I know he doesn't understand a game of football like that and he doesn't understand football operations, but those are common sense type of comments that a higher up cannot ignore at all and it's just further proof that sweeping changes not not a half, but sweeping changes need to be made, because you know, when you talk about players not giving their all, you know that further goes into what Doug was saying about the culture being messed up. That means you're, culturally, as a team, you may have the worst culture of all 32 teams, or close to it. Right, it may be some teams out there with similar culture, but you have to feel like, culturally, after hearing those comments from Andre Cisco, if the Jaguars don't have the worst culture in the NFL, they're close to it. And while Sean Conn doesn't know the game of football, it's ultimately that falls on him that the culture got that way.
Speaker 1:Right and his job as an owner. You know and I know you can just sit back and make money off a poor product, but his job as an owner involves getting the right people in place to avoid just what Andre Sisko mentioned. Right, even if you don't know the game of football, you can always hire somebody that can help you mold the culture of your football team and of the football operations side of things. And that's also a sign that what you have there presently is a massive failure and that goes from again like this, and this is why sweeping changes needs to be made. That doesn't discount Trent Baalke out of the situation Although coaches do have a great say in a culture for a team that also doesn't discount Trent Baalke from the equation as well, because you're not bringing in the players as a talent evaluator, you're not bringing in the players that come with the right mindset, culturally, and will come into the organization and further evolve the culture, and that's why that part falls on Trent, with Trent being the talent evaluator and having the final saying.
Speaker 1:Who comes into the organization? From a player personnel perspective, that means that he deserves just as much blame as Doug Peterson, and Doug Peterson and the staff of course deserves some of the blame because they allow it, right. So you know, these are some things that shotgun I'll be very interested in, to see if it goes in one ear and comes out of the other, if it goes unnoticed or he's oblivious to it. It. But what andre cisco said is simply one of those things that a reasonable owner can't ignore and can can't let go unnoticed or not do anything about it.
Speaker 1:Which leads me to my next topic at hand, which is on shot con, who he made some comments after or, excuse me, before the game, around 11 30 on saturday, before the game where um, you know he's again, he's doing media rounds because obviously they're in London and you know when a team goes to London they do get the opportunity. The media does get the opportunity to speak with Shotgun because of, you know, the international game aspect of the league being some of that Shotgun really advocates for and you know you know he continues to be on the forefront of the NFL international platform. So therefore, you know the media does get opportunities to speak with him and you know he revealed to the Florida Times Union and Demetrius Harvey Shout out to Demetrius Harvey, who does good work for the Florida Times Union, for the Florida Times Union In the process of speaking about the international games and the Jaguars' relationship in London. He was asked about the team's current situation and where they are at. You know they were 1-4 at the time but they're now 1-5.
Speaker 1:And you know, in the process of expressing himself he also said that you know he believes in Doug Peterson and Trent Baalke and of course those comments blew up on social media and a lot of people had a lot of things to say, and rightfully so I don't blame them one bit, but I just wanted to discuss those comments and get my thoughts and insight on those comments that he made and, quite frankly, I tweeted about it and I did say this. For them to come out of a one in four hole at that time and now it's one in five, if you're going to say anything as an owner is probably best that you show your support to what you have, because you know you want to encourage them in terms of getting them out of that situation if it's a chance. However, this is the key with it right. In saying that and putting your belief in Doug Peterson and in Trent Baalke, you're putting your faith in an unrealistic situation that is going to be hard to come from Again. At that time, they were 1-4. It hasn't been done many times, or we haven't seen it many times, where a team has come from a one and four start or a poor start. I know the Jacksonville Jaguars did it two years ago, but that's not ideal and that's not typical right. So for him to have faith that they can fix this situation in Doug Peterson, the players and Trent Baalke, that's very unrealistic and while they do have an example where they have been over to being able to overcome those odds right. The fact of the matter is the Jaguars the first time they did that, they were the new kid on the block, right, doug Peterson it was his first year with the Jacksonville Jaguars new scheme, new defensive scheme, all of that good stuff offensive scheme as well and, as we've seen in the NFL, it's a little bit hard to prepare and stop the unknown. Right again, they were the new kid on the block. They were kind of the fresh kid on the block, especially within their division, and teams were still I guess what I'm trying to say is still trying to figure them out.
Speaker 1:Now that teams have figured them out, mike Caldwell has been fired. Right Now that teams, you know, got a year's worth of film on them. Mike Caldwell's out the door. The offensive scheme currently looks like crap, although, again, you know, as I said earlier, they left a lot of plays on the field with drops and what have you. But for the most part, the offensive scheme has looked like crap and I guess it's irrelevant to mention the defensive scheme on Ryan Nielsen, because he's a brand new defensive coordinator that wasn't around in 2017 or when in Doug Peterson's first year, so we won't mention that. But what we're seeing, that is that now that teams can identify what the Jacksonville Jaguars are, they've struggled tremendously and it all started last year, basically, when they went on that skid and couldn't acquire another win or two to get themselves in the playoffs. So therefore, shotgun's faith in Trent Baalke and in Doug Peterson is truly unrealistic.
Speaker 1:Now I guess the key here is does Shotgun really believe what he said, or was it? You know, just as we say coach speak or owner speak, or coach talk or owner talk, in this case it's hard to tell with him, and that's crazy to say it's hard to tell with him. But if he does truly believe they can get him, get themselves out of this hole, then that's a problem in itself. And that's what has been the problem for the jacksonville jaguars for quite a long time is that just ownership is, quite frankly, clueless and they are absolutely not going to climb themselves out of this hole. When you, when you look at what has taken place beforehand, right, there's no reason that Sean Conn should actually believe it. He may actually believe it, but there's no reason that he should believe that.
Speaker 1:When you look at what has taken place beforehand, from the skid that I mentioned from last year, where you know they went on the losing streak to all the way up until now. We're talking about a team here who has terrible clock management. Now a cultural issue that has been put out to the light which we already knew that, but that came to the light less than 20 or a little bit over, maybe 24 hours or less than 24 hours, after your comments came out from the Florida time union about you believing in the team. But there's a cultural issue that has come to the light and been revealed by the players and your head coach, and you have a GM who's poor at roster building and arguably poor at player acquisition as well. So there's that as well.
Speaker 1:So when you factor those things into the equation and just how the team is looked and how they can't get out of their own way, and some other things that you could put in there, there is no way that he believes that a light switch is just going to magically come on like that and things will turn around. But he he's going to be Sadly mistaken because the writing is on the wall that his team can't get back to where they were in terms of where they were in the first year of Doug Peterson's career here in the Jets with the Jacksonville Jaguars and he's going to continue to have to wear egg on his face for these comments that he's making. You know the team is just gonna Trent Baalke and Doug Peterson and the team we're only gonna keep embarrassing him the more he has to come out and say stuff. So why not nipping in the bud, get you a clean slate going with everybody, clean the house out, start it from scratch. You know time will tell. You know we'll find out more about that in November and December, but I just wanted to share my comments on you. You know Sean Cunn and what he said to the Florida Times Union.
