We're back!
Episode 144 of Touchdown Jaguars! is all about getting excited for the regular season! With kickoff right around the corner, Phil Barrera and James Johnson break down five things they’re most looking forward to about the Jacksonville Jaguars heading into the new campaign. From the return of Travis Hunter to an intriguing rookie class and some major questions along the offensive and defensive lines, there’s plenty to be excited about as the Jaguars get ready to take the field.
James Johnson and Phil Barrera bring you the best and most up to date Jacksonville Jaguars news. "Touchdown Jaguars!" is a tribute to the prospective ownership group "Touchdown Jacksonville!" In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams and "Touchdown Jacksonville!" announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists. In November 1993, the NFL owners voted 26–2 in favor of awarding the 30th franchise to Jacksonville. James and Phil have been fans of the franchise ever since and have had the honor (and sometimes dishonor) of covering the team professionally since 2017. The rest as they say, is history.
Welcome to the Touchdown Jaguars Podcast. Here are your hosts, James Johnson and Phil Smith.
SPEAKER_02Hey everyone. Welcome back to the Touchdown Jaguars Podcast. I'm your co-host, Phil Barrera, and joining us, of course, is your other co-host, James Johnson. Jay, uh, we went pretty much the entire summer without dropping an episode. Uh, you know, life was life was life in and doing its thing, and uh, we've of course been very, very busy. That does not mean that you and I have not discussed Jaguars over the last couple of months. And of course, that means there is a ton to talk about here this evening, as you will uh, you know, enlighten us and inform us of some of the things we have to uh keep track of, look forward to, everything in between with the upcoming season. So very excited to be back here with you tonight, my man. And uh yeah, how are you doing? Good to be back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man, it feels like it's been a whole season instead of a few months. Um, but yeah, no, I'm good. Um, glad to be back, glad to be talking Jags again. I I was able to keep my eye on them um a great deal in the summer. I wasn't able to get to um a training camp or a practice or anything, but I still kept my ear to the ground. Um an interesting season. Uh I think a special season is coming up. Um, so we might talk a little bit about that down the road. But yeah, man, um can't complain, man. Glad to be back at it, glad to be talking about a competent team. That helps a lot too, right? Um, this time we haven't been skipping out on Jaguars content because of, you know, what they have in the front office or because they are a bad team. We just, you know, life been life. And so at least we have something, you know, good to talk about, a lot of good things to talk about here uh in today's episode, man. I can't wait.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like you said, there there's optimism about the Jaguars from outside of the fan base, which you know, it's always risky whenever that happens. You know, we remember, we remember 2018 after coming off the AFC Championship game appearance. But you know, everything feels a little different. I think it's okay for us to be a little optimistic while, of course, shielding and protecting ourselves. So we'll talk about you know some of those things that we may have to look forward to uh here today. So uh want to welcome in, uh welcome back, listeners again. Though, you know, some of you still interact with us over on Twitter. Jay's been primarily running that, so that has been awesome. And uh also Jay's been putting out some short form content over on his social media on Instagram and on Twitter as well. So we appreciate you guys for interacting with all of that. Uh make sure you click the Link Tree link in the show notes of this episode to keep up with uh the podcast, as well as myself and Jay. So uh yeah, Jay, uh let's kind of get into it. We're gonna save our predictions and expectations for the team for next week. Uh we're gonna drop an episode right before uh the uh before week one's matchup against the Cleveland Browns. But for me, I've not been not been as locked into the team as I've wanted to over the course of the summer. We already talked about how busy we've been, and you know, I just have not been super been able to pay attention uh about um in terms of what's been going on with the team. So let's start with some of the things we can look forward to this season. And of course, there is a guy uh that is returning, uh, who is essentially our first round draft pick from last year and this year, since we sent one out to get him. And unfortunately, his season was cut short last year. So what's that what's the thing uh, you know, right at the top of the list as far as something we should look forward to when the Jaguars return to the field?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man, I am looking forward to Travis Hunter's return, especially and I know he's a gifted receiver, but especially on defense, right? Because he he instantly gives us an upgrade at cornerback over Newsom, right? Like easily, you know, if ands or buts about it. And that's huge, man. That's significant, man. And and also, too, man, I personally think I've always said that you know that he's a better cornerback than a receiver. But I personally think like he showed traits of when he was on the field as a cornerback, and I'm not just talking about um just in the games, but in some practices I went to last year. He showed traits of being just like an elite shutdown corner. So like right off the rip, like his impact on defense is it, I might be bolstering it up a little bit more than others, but I think like not only are they getting a great player back, I think they're getting like an all-pro caliber. And again, I know his body of work is limited at cornerback in NFL, but I think they're getting an all-pro there, which is leaps and bounds better than Newsom, right? We all saw, you know, um how Newsome looked out there after the trade. And, you know, in in Gladstone's defense, he was trying to fix a position that, you know, um we we needed a body at because Travis Hunter had gone down, you know, um, and he had um his season had ended a little earlier than we expected. So, you know, I do like the effort. You know, sometimes we've had GMs in the past that get to the trade deadline and just think we're fine and do nothing, right? So that's always good to know, like, you know, they're always looking to improve. Um, but yeah, I cannot wait to have him on the field as a cornerback. Now, on offense, you know, I'm optimistic as well for that, but I I think like it's just a little bit harder to gauge, you know, how much usage he'll get on offense because they're so like loaded at wide receiver. They they even drafted two receivers late in the draft, and you know, James Gladstone, or at least the Rams tree, has a great track record of even hitting on late round receivers, too. And we kind of saw that with these two young men and Josh Cameron and CJ Williams in the preseason. They got a lot of snaps. They had to even, you know, have an uptick in snaps as well in practice, too, because you know, Parker was out for like, you know, five days or so, whatever the case may be. Um, BTJ was out for a little bit, so they had to find themselves, you know, inserted um into kind of starter roles in practice as well. And, you know, Liam kind of praised them for that. So I'm not really sure what Travis's role fits. I mean, I of course we could say like he's the wide receiver four. Um, but you know, you still kind of just don't know what his snap count at receiver will be. He let him tell he wants to play, you know, every snap if he could, but that's just not um possible when you have all the weapons that we have on offense. But I think that's the reason I'm more excited about him as a defensive player, too, um, is because I'm just not sure how many snaps he'll get offensively. Now, NFL, I want to say one more thing. NFL, they put out this video on their Twitter page, right? I'll never call it X, but on their Twitter page of, you know, they just doing what they do, um, getting everybody ready for the upcoming season. And one of them was, you know, dedicated to Travis Hunter and, you know, going into year two and just trying to get everybody hyped up about him. And just seeing him on the field at receiver and just the ability to cut and like get free, that made me excited as well, too. Um, even though we don't know what he's gonna, you know, see in terms of a snap count on offense, that did get me excited as well, just kind of watching him like juke people out of their shoes. And it's like, wow, man, like we really are getting a kid that is um a phenomenal athlete on both sides of the ball back, and that should be a huge shot in the arm for you know the Jaguars in 2026.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, we talked about this when he went down last year, like he was figuring it out on both sides of the ball. And, you know, there was that report over the offseason. There's a uh oh, he's gonna be primarily primarily focusing on defense or off, you know, all those reports that come out when uh, you know, there's not really a whole lot to talk about in the middle of the summer. So uh very excited to see what he uh you know has been working on. He's definitely bulked up, he's huge, he looks great. Uh very, very excited to see um, you know, what he can do in the field, but also just having his energy out on the field, I think, is a really, really uh like undervalued aspect of him returning to the field. Like this team has no shortage, I think, of vocal leaders, but like Travis Hunter, of course, is the guy front and center that you know mainstream media is going to focus on. We talked about that when he was drafted, right? This is a reason for people to pay attention to Jacksonville. Now they still aren't necessarily doing that, like uh Coach Cohen uh you know talked about when he was on uh I think of what is on the radio, you know, over the summer. Uh that's still not going to happen. But you know, Travis Hunter only helps that, of course, in terms of the uh you know, the front-facing uh you know, media like national media, which we don't necessarily really care about, but also again, just having him back. Like it was such a bummer to not see him out there during the uh during that win streak, right? And during those highs in in Denver and San Francisco, and then uh you know the playoff game. Like you can't you cannot convince me. You know, I won't remember my my bold take or my bold prediction last year was that he was going to be a finalist for an offensive and defensive rookie of the year. Uh the offensive thing maybe might maybe wasn't going to happen, but the defensive thing, like we said, he was figuring that out, man. So like Jay, you just cannot understand, understate how important just his presence is going to be uh going to be when he comes back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we we saw it with a fellow rookie, LeQuent Allen, how much of a shot of the arm he was, or shot in the arm he was for the team. And you know, I even seen a video of LeQuent Allen in the middle of the huddle, you know, leading everybody in the middle of a huddle actually as a rookie. So that just kind of goes to show you how those vocal leaders are not, I don't want to say needed by the team because they already had like, you know, Trevor and Josh Hines Allen and Trayvon Walker. But you you need those kind of flamboyant leaders, right? The ones that are that, you know, in Travis' case, you always see him the first thing ESPN goes to, right, when they come into town or NFL Network, the first person they go to on the field when they're warming up, Travis Hunter, because they know he's gonna be dancing, trying all kinds of crazy stuff. And um, you know, he I wouldn't be shocked to see Travis Hunter one day trying to kick field goals, which he did this in training camp. He was kicking field goals, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Travis Hunter kicking field goals before a game one day, you know what I'm saying, and that going viral. Um he's just kind of all over the place in a good way, of course. He's kind of all over the place, but um, yeah, man, he he's gonna be a much needed jolt of energy um to that whole room. And um, yeah, much like I I guess the way I would put it is um he's kind of like LeQent Allen times two, probably not as violent of a speaker as Lequent Allen, um, but definitely bring some juice uh to the locker room for sure.
SPEAKER_02You mean Travis Hunter is not gonna go up to Max Crosby and say, I'll smoke you, boy? That's exactly what I mean.
SPEAKER_00I've seen Travis talk some noise too now. I don't know if you've seen some of his high school stuff. But uh yeah, man, he he'll talk some noise too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, can't wait to have him back. Um again, just his uh his energy, his smile, and uh, you know, what he brings to the table off the field too is gonna be really exciting to see. So uh yeah. Uh what about uh the next one here, Jay? Uh of course, um the uh you know the interior, exterior of the defensive line was a big talking point last year as far as production. Uh what are you anticipating when it comes to uh the interior defensive line of the ball?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I am eager to see what a healthy Eric Armstead looks like and a healthy um Trayvon Walker looks like because I mean all the talk has been during the offseason, right, is oh, they lost Devin Lloyd, right? And that definitely is gonna be a reason why the defense may decline, right? So I've been looking for reasons that the defense would get better if they could, you know. And those are two of the key things I kept coming back to as well. And and we kind of brought this up and brought it to my attention. I was listening to his part, and I really didn't even think about it. Um, but just imagine if we had a healthy Trayvon Walker for the whole season, right? You know, you know, he had the wrist issue where um he had to um have surgery and he had a knee issue. Um that didn't require surgery, but he had a knee issue, if I can recall, too later in the season after the wrist, if I'm recalling the timeline correctly on that. Um and we all know, like, if it was up to Trayvon, like Trayvon would have like put some tape on it and went back out there, but the Docs probably like, bro, you need to not even attempt to go back on the field with your wrist jacked up like this. But um just imagine though, what I'm saying, Phil, is just imagine if we had him the whole season healthy, right? Um, and I think, you know, the Jaguars looked at it from that standpoint too. And proof of that is they gave him the contract extension, right? So they were looking at it as, well, if we had him healthy last season, you know, this guy would have balled out, you know, he probably would have got 10 sacks, whatever the case may be, because they paid him like it, right? So, you know, they they looked at it as the proof is in the pudding, right? And that that's what veteran players earn over time after they go out and do it time and time again. As Trayvon has done at least early in his career. So, yeah, getting him back, man, is gonna be very exciting. And pairing him with Josh Hines Allen full time for the whole season, hopefully, um, will be nice to see. You know, I know a lot of people say he wasn't worthy of taking first overall, this, that, and the other. Um, but I've seen a player that has improved each year, and I saw a player that was improving last year and would have been better last year had the injury not taken place. So that's a X factor uh to consider in terms of, you know, why this defense might not regress even with the loss of Devin Lloyd. And then Armstead, right? The team kind of showed a lot of faith in him too, right? Like it was all over the place, right? In terms of me. Uh, maybe even you, Phil. I don't know if you were in on this, but all over Twitter and the fans, right? Like, we need to cut Eric Armstead, free up that cap and give it to, you know, who knows? God, well, we're trying to get Parker Washington a contract right now. Give it to him, you know, type of thing. So there was that in terms of, you know, people saying, like, maybe cut him before the uh free agency period, or cut him, um, I think what is it, the June 1st designation date that you could cut a player on to before the new league year or whatever. But regardless, everybody was kind of in line with cutting them. And the Jaguars shockingly kept him with that high cap figure. I don't think they adjusted his contract or anything. We see people getting their contracts adjusted. I don't think Eric Armstead has been one of them. And that kind of speaks volumes, um, in my opinion, of how they feel about him. They didn't really acquire anybody, at least in free agency, at the defensive tackle position. Um, I don't know, you know, if that was the goal and they just couldn't, you know, end up getting anybody, and you know, they went to other teams, but they didn't get anybody at in terms of free agency, so that kind of speaks volumes of how they felt about him. Now, they did get Albert Regis in the draft in the third round, who a lot of people don't think is a third-round pick. We'll talk about that more later, more on that later. Um, we won't dive into that right now. Um, but you know, they did get Albert Regis, and they also traded for Rukay Aurororo, who we'll talk about a little bit as well, too. Um, but I think like the way they've moved kind of shows faith in Armstead, and they kind of feel like they felt about Walker as well. Had we had him healthy in this defense, it would have performed a lot better. Um he even said it, I think he said it to Ryan O'Halloran of the Times Union, of the Florida Times Union. You know, when he came back from the hand injury, he was out there like fighting and trying to stop the run and pass rush with one hand essentially. Which we, you know, I mean, like me, I and you have never played a ounce of defensive line in our life field, but I would imagine that's pretty hard to do. You know, playing D-tackle with one hand because your limbs are so important at that position with swim moves and even your legs as well, which are also um they play a big part into it too. But your upper body and your limbs, your upper body limbs play a big part into that position. So let's see what he does when he's healthy, man. And maybe he makes a lot of people regret what they said about him. You know, I mean you always say we don't mind taking back something we said about a player or um front office personnel or whatever the case may be. This is Eric Armstead's opportunity to be one of those players.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, let me to touch on Eric Armstead first, man. You know, one thing I'm not gonna do is and we neither one of us will ever do is like you just said, like we've never played it down a defense in the NFL. I'm not gonna say here and and say that like and necessarily tell someone how to do their job. Like there's always like a player every single season that gets gets kind of picked on and kind of blamed for um certain mishaps. And a lot of that, you know, sometimes that has to do with their play on the field. And Eric Armstead, I think you if you sat him down, would probably let you know he wasn't necessarily happy with how things went in terms of his performance uh since he's gotten here. Uh, you know, when you're when you're attached to that type of number, and let's be honest, Eric Armstead is a was a known name coming in from San Francisco. We expected big things from him, and because those things haven't necessarily translated or showed up here, you know, that can whenever you spend that kind of money, like fans are going to immediately go to like they're immediately gonna like bring up, you know, what a waste of money, what a waste of a space, and and all that. But you know, the question always is, right? Well, who are you gonna replace them with? And maybe they've done that. Maybe they've done it with Aurora, maybe they've done that with with Regis, you know, and we'll see those guys will have chances if Armstead, you know, starts to struggle, most likely. We'll see what happens there. Um, but like one thing we I've learned throughout this podcast where like guys that have this kind of like pedigree coming in, like they get plenty of chances. I don't expect Eric Armstead, unless something drastic happens, Jay, and and it's just such a you know egregious, you know, uh decision of coaching to keep him out there. Eric Armstead's gonna get his reps. Now, will he still be here? Come trade deadline, you know, come the end of the season, come the offseason. I that I can't say. Uh, but you know, he he's gonna be here, and then you know, as is and while he is here, uh, you know, obviously we want him to perform really, really well. So we'll we'll see what happens. But I'm sure he's very aware, like you said, they didn't necessarily bring anybody in through free agency, but you know, he's aware that hey, we'll we'll bring in a guy from Atlanta and take a look. We'll draft a guy in the third round and maybe take your spot if you're not, you know, up to snuff. Uh uh, I'm sure he's very well aware of that. And listen, people are only going to be calling for those other names um sooner if he continues to underperform. So you know, be interesting to see what happens there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I mean, like, you know, his the the first part of the season for him would was respectable. You know what I'm saying? It went, you know, it wasn't the figure that we were paying for. It didn't match that kind of play, but it it was respectable. And and as you said, man, I I don't think not not just, you know, the fan base, but I don't even think like Liam Cohen and the front office is wired that way. Just because you have a certain cap figure tied to you, you know, I don't think that's gonna make them continue to put him on the field. Now, again, I was saying earlier in the offseason, um, you know, they probably and it definitely wasn't because of the cap figure, but they probably saw something in him that made him worth keeping. You can bet your bottom dollar it wouldn't have capped though, right? Because I don't think this is how they operate. Uh, maybe Trent would have, but this group, you know, again, I think maybe what it was is they viewed him in the same exact lens of Trayvon Walker. Is he wasn't healthy, right? And we want to see this young man healthy. And um, now if he's going out there healthy and still performing like he did in the back half of last year, then we need to replace him. You know, then we need to get Albert Regis on the field, or we need to get Ruke Auroro on the field uh to replace him. But I there's definitely some intrigue. With wanting to see what they have in him. And in a lot of ways, too, he he is, even though he was brought in by the previous regime, he fits the culture, right? We talk about, and this, I'll never get used to this. We actually have culture now, right? But he fits the culture in a sense of intangibly rich, you know, a leader, smart player, this, that, and the other. And I I think that's another reason, too, that they may see something in him as well is he fits the culture. And as I said, you know, he he wasn't healthy last year. So we'll see. We'll see.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, he's he's gonna get the opportunities, of course. Uh so uh, you know, we definitely want to see him perform. Um as far as Trayvon Walker, uh, you know, won't really add too much here that hasn't already been said. You know, the discussion about him going number one overall is that that's not ever gonna go everywhere anywhere, especially when you look at the three guys that went right after him. Aidan Hutchinson has always been in the discussion. Uh Aiden Hutchinson, he's got his own list of not being able to stay healthy, uh, unfortunately. And then Derek Stingley Jr. went, and then Sauce Gardner. So you're talking about three of the better players in the NFL. Uh, I'm not sure, but I'm I'm I'm sure at one point have they've all been in the top 100 uh as far as that top 100 list. I don't know. Has Trayvon Walker ever been on that list? He was in he was in on in last year, right? Or was he in this year, Trayvon? No, he's been in the show speaking, you know, but he hasn't been on that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it's crazy too, though. Like he is like, you know, if not 90s, you know, outs just barely outside of the top 100. And I think, you know, a lot of that too is an enough people don't have a lens on him either because he plays for Jacksonville as well.
SPEAKER_02He's I mean, he's getting more and more respect every single year, though. We're seeing those, you know, I mean, they're all engagement beta counts, but Trayvon and JHA are consistently like mentioned in the top 10 duos list, which is which is nice. You know, that wouldn't have happened even just a couple of years ago. So uh listen, the conversation about what Aiden Hutchison and Josh Hines Allen would have looked like, that that's always going to be there. There's no point in having it now. But Trayvon has been uh great since he got here, and he's only gotten better. And, you know, I would love to see him crack that top 100 next year.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, man, and real quick, we we'll wear off topic just a little bit here, man. Man, am I excited to see, because you kind of mentioned this, and it's this what made the light bulb go off in my head. Um the depth behind them, right? And that's something that a lot of people came into this year questioning, like, okay, we have Josh Hines Allen, we have Trayvon Walker, but what's behind them? And you know, I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, slow your roll on that. Did you not see BJ Green developing over the season? Did you not see Daniel Stragal developing over the season? Um, yeah, they were undrafted, and I think that's why they got overlooked a lot. Um, but with another year under their belts, um it looks like they could be, you know, some stars in the making as well. Especially BJ Green. He he really looked good this preseason, right? We all know the starters didn't play in this preseason, right? And a lot of it was because we were dealing with injuries, you know, that we sustained during training camp. So for the first time and that I can remember in a long time, the starters didn't play. Um, but BJ Green got a lot of time on the field um with the in-game stars in the, you know, in the actual preseason games, right? Uh he was with the first team in the preseason games. And he looked like a standout, right? He looked like a guy like if Josh Hines Allen was going to get some twos, you know, some number twos and number threes, he kind of looked like that at times. Um and and of course, Stragal, um, he he flashed here and there as well, just not as much as BJ Green, and also to this new young man that just came out of nowhere, right? Out of undrafted free agency in Brian Thomas Jr., Brian, that is B-R-Y-A-N, right, Thomas Jr., the second BTJ, out of nowhere, right? When we when we brought him in and we looked at that free agency list, that undrafted free agency list um this April or May, whenever it was that we brought in the undrafted free agents, he wasn't even one we circled, right? The reason that our attention was drawn to him is because we obviously have a BTJ already on the team. It's like, oh, we got two Ryan Thomases. But nobody in their wildest dreams thought that that young man was gonna make the roster. And here he is, he put out three, what, 3.5 sacks in the preseason, right? Just looked like he was all over the place. That's another, that's a third pass rusher, man. In addition to um BJ Green and Stragal. Um, so those three behind Trayvon Walker and Josh Hines Allen, I'm really excited to see them in the regular season.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, the defensive line in general, I mean, so many rotation options and chances for you know some of these new guys to get some reps, uh, obviously very, very exciting and on this list for good reason. Um to flip to the offensive side of the ball, Jay, uh, when we talk about the offensive line, uh obviously a big change happening there. So uh yeah, what should we be looking forward to over on that side of the ball?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so on that side, um, Anton Harrison, it finally happened, right? We have been talking about it for years and years and years. We believe he's a left tackler of the future. Well, Cole Van Lanta was still dealing with what we think was an ACL surgery. You know, they were super secretive on that. Um, but what we thought was an ACL surgery, and he was recovering from that, and he didn't come back until late in the training camp. He didn't practice in terms of, you know, core practice. You know, he was off to the side, but he didn't practice um at all during training camp. And, you know, that put him in a position where we, you know, we were throwing Walker Little out there at left tackle, right? And, you know, this is a good thing about having a competent head coach in front office, you know, Liam Cohen knew that wasn't gonna work, right? We we uh we clearly knew Walker Little wasn't gonna work at left tackle, right? But, you know, you what you see sometimes is these coaches are stubborn, right? And they won't admit the facts. And you kind of can't do that at left tackle. You have to get your, you know, $50 million quarterback the best option you can give him at left tackle. And that's what they did. They put Anton there. And you know, they have been rearranging the linemen anyway to just kind of see who's versatile and what gives them the best start in five anyway. Try Anton Harrison at left tackle, and he thrived at it and did not relinquish that role. So now that Cole Van Lannon is back and he'll begin practicing soon, probably, he'll go to right tackle. And now we have Anton Harrison at left tackle. And yeah, I know that does mean we're gonna have to pay him a lot of money now that he's playing left tackle instead of right tackle because the the salary is uh significant in those two positions. Um, but that's what I want to watch to see is how he um performs at left tackle. Of course, he played it at Oklahoma. Um, so it's nothing like new to him, but on the NFL level, it's something that he hadn't done previously. So I want to see how he performs there because again, you know, he's coming up on a situation. I think we picked up his fifth-year extension. So um he can play on that next year. Um, but if he thrives at the left tackle position, that's yet another player that we need to start having conversations about extending.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, we'll always have, you know, kind of uh we'll always have love for Anton Harrison over here because he was the player they drafted when we covered the draft at uh on site. So, you know, we were certainly w uh, you know, rooting for him. And um, yeah, like I said, this is something definitely a long time coming. We drafted him in 2023, and the expectation, of course, you know, we were wondering, all right, what with Walker Little here, what's the what's the plan for him drafting a uh right tackle in the first round? But yeah, I mean this was this was something that I think a lot of us could have foreseen and you know, really excited for him to uh get that chance. You know, when you look at a lot of outlets, they have, you know, a lot of them have uh Jacksonville's offensive line ranked relatively low in the rankings when it comes to the league. Uh where do you think where would you be happy um or where do you expect maybe and well expect where you know we'll we'll leave that for um for next week. But what are what are realistic expectations as far as where you think this offensive line can land? Somewhere between the 10s and the 20s? Can they go higher? Will it be lower? Like what would you be happy with?
SPEAKER_00It's it's especially hard to tell this year because they didn't play the starters. You know, we all are going into this blind. Um in national analysts and local analysts. But I mean, they felt like a top half offensive line last year. Now they couldn't run the ball like we wanted them to. They could run it at times, but it was because of like pure grit. You know what I'm saying? Like fighting for extra yardage type of thing. Uh they had to fight a little too hard to run the ball for my liking. But they felt like a top half of the league type of unit. I think if they are, you know, top 12 this year, that'll mark improvement. Um, because I mean we have seen teams get it done with top 15-ish offensive lines, right? Again, that does cause situations where, you know, it's a little bit harder to run the ball than other teams have, but top 12-ish, I would be fine with that. What love them to crack the top 10 because that probably means they're running the ball better than they were. And, you know, that's a point of um of emphasis that Liam has discussed. So I guess like that that leads right into my next um uh thing that I'm looking forward to here, um, which is how well can we run the ball, right? And um, you know, Liam talked about this in the offseason with the uh the media and every like a lot of the moves they made, right? And a lot of people have looked at these moves and, you know, said that they didn't like the moves that the Jaguars made or they didn't do enough. Um, I don't know if I would say that, but I what I did see is a team that made a bunch of moves that weren't flashy but had purpose, right? Phil, that's the best way I could put it. Um the Nate Borkatcher pick had purpose. They want to run the ball better. And also, too, um, there's a podcast that the athletic does. It's like their NFL um show podcast, a very good podcast. I was listening to it yesterday, and they brought something to my attention too, about that Nate Borkatcher pick uh that also helps the offense overall, right? The reason that Nate Barkatcher could have been the draft pick or was the draft pick is because also Brenton Strange, and a lot of people forget this. Brenton Strange was one of the better vertical threat tight ends in football. And this now gives him the opportunity to be that, right? And add a layer of explosiveness. That's something else we've talked about, too, is one to be a little bit more explosive. We did see that towards the end of last year, and um Brenton Strange can help with that. He's one he's one of the better vertical threat tight ends in the league when given the chance. So, you know, there's that, you know, I digress from the point. Um, as I was saying, we want to run the ball a little better, but Nate Borkatcher does help with that, and he helps as an inline blocker to help us run the ball better. That was one play, it didn't take long to even see it, right? Um, first offensive drive we had of the preseason, right, Phil, um, where um it was rookie uh Jamari Taylor, undrafted rookie. He ran uh a playoff to the left side, if I'm not mistaken. And um, guess who was leading the way for him? Nate Borkatcher. So um, you know, that just kind of tells you what they have in mind for him. Um and also, too, you could just kind of look at the other moves they made and tell that they really want to run the ball. Emmanuel Pregnant, right? Which had we had no business being able to get him in the third round anyway, but we'll take it. Um he has found himself in the lineup, right? And a lot of why you would want him in the lineup is he probably right off the bat gives you your naturally uh most gifted in terms of strength offensive linemen on the field, right? Right off the rip. So there is that he'll help them run the ball a little bit better. As we all knew, when Liam came to Jacksonville, a lot of why he was a coach that was so coveted is because he took Tampa's offense from like dead last and rushing to like top five in the league in one year, right? So that was a big part of why he was coveted, and that's a big part of his DNA. He's talked about it. It's in his DNA. And um, I think he talked about how his dad um, you know, was an advocate of the wing tee offense, right? And me and Phil, you know, we're probably showing our age, but we we've seen our share of the wing tee offense back in the day and there's straight grit, right? Just straight. As a matter of fact, they kind of incorporated in the new uh college football. That's one of the offenses. Uh, if not this year's, it was, it may have been it may have been last year's um college football game. But that's one of the philosophies you can have is like the wing T offense, right? Just straight grit and just run it through people's faces, right? Um, but he talked about his dad and how he um, you know, was a big advocate of like the wing tee offense. So when you start hearing that, like wing T offense, it's like, okay, yeah, this dude is like, you know, gritty at his core in terms of his upbringing and what he really wants to do. Don't get it wrong. We got a lot of good skill weapons in terms of receivers, and we look like a bit a significantly better team passing than running. But um, I think at his core, Liam Cohen does want to run the ball. Um, at least if if not, you know, become a top five rushing unit in the league, a top ten, and and at least be better than we were last year. I don't think he was okay with how we struggled to run the ball last year.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, new era, you know, moving on from Travis H. N. And, you know, obviously last year, you know, Basil Tutin became a uh not only a darling here amongst Jaguar fans, but also in the media. You know, a lot of people are very, very high on him. I've heard Mina Kimes talk about Bascial Tutin as well, being a being a big fan uh of him as well as the Jaguars just in general. So, you know, between him and LeQuint Allen, uh, you know, obviously there was concern or criticism about Chris Rodriguez really being the only, you know, kind of free agent signing in, you know, it's not necessarily splashy, but a guy that when you talk to Commanders fans, you know, that they were pr you know, they were pretty high on and upset about losing. So uh yeah, like you said, Jay, with with Liam's emphasis on improving the run and getting that done in Tampa, uh, you know that they're gonna want to make sure that they are much more successful at running the football. Probably one of the, you know, when the earlier in the season, of course, you know, relying a lot on the run, but then as things, you know, Trevor started to get things figured out, they bring Jacoby Myers in. You see a very pass-heavy offense. But yeah, uh, you know, we're we're expecting big things from Baychel 2 and Namir Abdullah still has wheels, which is crazy. So, you know, looking for looking forward to seeing how this offensive line meshes and gets together to block for these running backs. And, you know, like you you just mentioned, they didn't play in the preseason. So like how are they gonna how how is the how much did they implement during OTAs? You know, we're talking we're you know, people are talking about how much more important those joint practices have become. And, you know, um Baker Mayfield, even though he's on the offensive side, came out and said, like, yeah, Jacksonville kind of came in and punched us in the mouth, man. And and then of course, you know, a certain podcast in Tampa said that, you know, Liam Cohen drugged them. But uh that's neither here nor there. But uh you know, you want to know like how how this running uh running room is going to uh how these running backs are going to step up uh you know, now that we have moved on from the uh the a-chan era, so formerly known as ETN.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man. I I struggle with I got a H Han jersey, man, and I look at it.
SPEAKER_02It's crazy that he just we didn't talk about this over the summer. Like he never he just never mentioned it.
SPEAKER_00Bro, he did it all through college, right? Like he was especially, he was even more popular in college at Clemson. Like, that's all you heard. Um, is it uh um what is his name? Running ESPN analyst um that does the commentating for college football. Um Kurt Herbstreet. Kurt Herbstreet called him that all is you know, his his career and the um all of the other analysts of the world, Brent Musberger and um I might have got the conference wrong. I think Brent covered the SEC, but you know, all of those popular commentators from college, they you know, they call this name frequently, ETN, ETN, ETN. And it's like, when was somebody gonna say and his brother too, right? His his brother um went to UGA and he's now in the league with the Panthers. He never said anything. So I guess they were just rolling with the punches, you know. But um, yeah, that was interesting, man. But um, Travis, I still got your jersey, man. Um, there will be no disrespecting to your jersey, even though you did go to the Saints.
SPEAKER_02Um, and you know, I was raised in Georgia, so we we don't like the Saints here either, as in in the state of Georgia, but um, you know, at least he didn't end up on the Titans or the Texans or the Colts, which is like what would have happened, you know, in years past. He didn't go, you know, full Arden Key, who's doing the AFC South tour. Right. Where's he? He's still in Indianapolis, right? He didn't end up in Houston. I think so. I think so. They don't have to see Houston's a I don't want to disrespect Arden Key. Houston doesn't need didn't need Arden Key.
SPEAKER_00So you know what shot me? Laquan Treadwell is still in the league. He plays for the Colts. I saw him at Oppressor. In Oppressor, that's who drafted him, right? Was he drafted by the Colts? Oh I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Who drafted Laquan Treadwell?
SPEAKER_00I don't think so.
SPEAKER_02It feels like a Raiders pick. Hold on, let me see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Let's look into that.
SPEAKER_02Who is he drafted by? Currently with the Colts. He's been there for some years. Drafted 2016, 10 years. That's a hell of a career. That's a good career. Uh nope, hold on. Vikings. That's right. Yeah. I remember that.
SPEAKER_00Hey, good for him, man. Yeah, no, the longer you can do it, the better, man. Like, get your money, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, yeah, obviously um running the ball, going to be a uh a big time emphasis here this year, especially with uh, you know, um Lequin Allen and Bachel Tutin no longer being rookies. Um, but speaking of rookies, obviously, Jay, how is this rookie class? You know, what what is what is their responsibility going to be, of course, with this this team not being very active in free agency? You know, you may they made some trades here and there, uh, but they're gonna be heavily heavily reliant on the rookie class, not just the draft class, but some of those undrafted guys you just mentioned uh, you know, a couple minutes ago.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, the the key one, I mean, I already mentioned Borkatcher and Pregnant, you know, the idea behind bringing them into the offense was physicality and helping us run the ball better. Regis, who I've also mentioned as well, I think he's one of the more interesting ones because we all, you know, felt like, at least based on his college film, that the idea of bringing him in was to play nose tackle, eat double teams and stuff like Devon Hamilton does, right? Um, but the thing with him was he's shorter than most nose tackles. And I said this in my evaluations, right? Um, and that helps him, right? You know, I I've heard players say it's like, you know, uh a nose tackle that short, it's like going up against a fire hydrant because they sit so low to the ground and they don't move. It's they're hard to move as a result. And we all know football is a, you know, that's one of the first lessons you learn. Football is a game of the lowest man wins, right? Um, we've had that conversation many times on this podcast where we've seen players playing high and getting knocked off the ball, but you know, those times are over where we actually play with technique now. Um, but uh Albert Regis, the interesting thing about him is he showed some pass rush ability too in the preseason. And then the light bulb went off. And, you know, some people had it in the back of their mind, like this dude might can bring some three technique elements into this this defense, right? And and push the pocket like we kind of want Eric Armstead to do. So he's gonna be very interesting. Um, and and Liam has said it too. And I, you know what, it it's one of those things that um I'm glad he said, Um, because I, you know, I think this is the first time I kind of heard a coach outwardly say this, but playing defensive tackle in the NFL um is is very difficult to do as a rookie, right? It it's so much to learn um in terms of it, it's not even a schematic thing, but techniques and what works on certain linemen and what doesn't work on certain offensive linemen. It it is something that you know you have to uh get a feel for and it. It takes a while to get a feel for it. So it'll be interesting to see if he can push the pocket, like we saw. Um, and I I think that was the first preseason game against the Saints where he got like an 18-yard sack or something like that. It was something crazy where he caught him way in the backfield. But like, bro, he went up, he went downfield like a freaking, like, dare I say, like, he was moving like Warren Sapp. I'm not comparing him to Warren Sapp. I'm just saying he was moving like him from a speed perspective. I was like, oh my God, which it it was it was crazy because the first thing I did was cut that up, if I can remember. And I was telling people in um my analysis and my notes, the first thing I I wrote about this kid was he will literally chase a quarterback all the way to Palakka if he had to. Like his pursuit of a quarterback is different. So to a degree, I'm not surprised that he kind of flashed that. But him, um, you know, Tanner Cozy, all a you know, late round pick, albeit, but that's kind of one of those things we talked about with the Rams tree where they they kind of make their money off of late-round picks sometimes in the Rams tree, right? Um you got a tight end here who clearly, you know, he's not gonna be what Nate Borkatcher is as a blocker. But you kept hearing his name in terms of receiving, right? And and catching um a lot of uh making a lot of catches in camp and you know, just kind of being that um that big body target as a receiver for um, you know, Trevor Lawrence and the backup quarterbacks. He got a lot of his reps with the backup quarterbacks. And then also, too, you know, um, I want to see CJ, the two rookie wide receivers we got again, just looking at the Rams' track record, these late round receivers, they've hit on. And I think James Gladstone has a little bit of that in him. Um we saw it with, you know, with, you know, albeit he can't stay out of the news for the wrong reads, but uh Puka Nakua, fourth round pick, right? I think um Cooper Cup was like a third or fourth round pick, too. Like they got this history of finding receivers outside around two, um, and and them turning out to be very good. Um, but CJ Williams and Josh Cameron, too, man. Um, which, you know, it's hard to see because much of the same reason what what I said with um Travis Hunter, they're they're so far down the depth chart on a deep roster or a deep position that you don't you can't really put a number on how many snaps they'll see. But I think we'll need them eventually, Phil. And what I mean by that is because receiver is such a taxing position um on the lower body, ankles, legs, and all of that, it's gonna come a time where, you know, BTJ might have to miss a game, right? Or Parker might have to miss a game, right? And, you know, um we have to put one of these young men into the game. But what stood out to me about them is just how Liam praised them from the perspective of um them soaking everything up from the veterans like a sponge. And I think that's important because we're gonna need them to play. They might have to start a game or two, or you know, um, not necessarily start, but play significant snaps in the game or two. So I'll be watching those two as well. I think we'll need them. And one person I left off on my list, too, um, Jalen Husky, the safety that we drafted as well. Um, he had a really good preseason, was all over the place. Um, you know, you couldn't miss him. You know, he was always making good, for the most part, breaks on the ball. I think he did miss one tackle that I saw. But um, he was one of those guys that was always in the camera pane, you know, just making a play of some sort. So that that'll be a huge one as well to see, you know, if we need him at any point, or if not, you know, he could contribute on special teams.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man. I mean, this rookie class is like one of the reasons we're just so excited about the depth on this team. You know, obviously, people, uh ourselves included, very confused about the Borgature pick. You know, we we get so enthralled and invested in the guys that like we think they should take, right? Oh, they need to target this guy in round two, and then when that doesn't happen, we're like, what the hell are they thinking? We've been we're we're right about this, we've been paying attention for months. This is what all the draft experts say. And uh, you know, and then he he comes in obviously with a very specific role in mind, and then they land someone like Pregnant, right? Like that happens a little bit later in the draft, a guy that probably shouldn't have even been there, you know, like a guy we did cover in the draft process that you were very excited about, and we put on pretty much all of our mock drafts. So uh, and then you know, talking about the receivers. I actually just saw scrolling through Twitter, um, Josh Cameron's mom posted like a little mini vlog about him making the 53, which is just you know, you love to see stuff like that. And uh, you know, um with with that track record when it comes to wide receivers and the Rams and and uh uh well how they've been able to identify those guys, um, it it gets you excited. And you know, with a uh a wide receiver room that was already, you know, we were already very, very happy about, um, hoping that these guys can can come in and uh be the opposite of like you know, some of those other names we've heard that that were training camp darlings that were like, oh, give them a shot, and then ultimately they were, you know, they they never made really any impact or anything like that. So very excited about this, man. Between Borkatcher, between the other tight end, between uh Kozil, like two two guys that bring two totally different things to the table, and you know, being able to use different lineups and uh really, really emphasize like how innovative this offense can be. Sign me up, man. So I'm excited for these guys to get a shot and uh see what kind of impact they have on the field. So we will see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, man. I'm excited about um the class in general. Um, excited about this season, man. I I have a good feeling about this season, you know. And sometimes I have to, you know, take myself back and be like, you know, it's the Jaguars. But at the same time, you know, the reason why we have those feelings is because we've never seen success sustained, right? So at some point we we gotta act like we've been here and we expect to be back here, you know. Um, so that's what I'm trying to do here. And um, yeah, overall, a good off-season, one of the better off seasons I can remember in quite some time. One of the better off seasons where we didn't have to like continuously look at our phone for the wrong reasons, right? For us, um, you know, worrying about our GM doing something stupid or not doing something and just sitting on his hands, right? This this is one of the most peaceful off seasons we've had. And I won't complain about it one bit, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man. I I think um, like we said, you know, there's a lot of optimism from the outside that we don't we aren't typically used to. But none of that matters here. None of that matters to the coaching staff. I'm sure none of that matters to 16 and the rest of the guys in that locker room. Um, they fell short of expectations. I I still believe that they were one of the the best teams in the league last year. And they were, record-wise, of course, um, but just ran into maybe one of the worst possible matchups at that time with a Buffalo team that, of course, you know, ended up uh um underachieving like they normally do um in the playoffs, but a team that like wasn't gonna go out in the f in the wild car round. You know what I mean? Like we could have played any other team and I would have felt a lot better. Buffalo was the draw where I was like, damn it, man. Like, not that I don't think we could have beaten Buffalo, but like it was the worst possible draw for us for a team that's like figuring itself out with the new head coach and and all that. Uh especially going, especially when you come in with that long winning streak, too. It's like, damn, when is this gonna come to an end? You know?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And and I knew that was a game where the refs weren't I mean, you don't look for the refs help anyway, but they certainly it felt like a game where they certainly were gonna lean in favor of the Bills uh when it comes to because make no mistake about it, you know, it does feel like certain games reps lean towards certain teams, albeit it might not be that much, but more so than your team. And yeah, that was the one I didn't want to see. Um real quick question though, man. Um, while we're here, what about the jerseys, man? The uniforms, man.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say that's how we should finish up the episode is talking about the jerseys. Um, so yeah, unless you've been under a rock, you know that the Jaguars rival jerseys came out. Well, uh pretty much every team's rival jerseys for the year came out. And um I at first was uh a little apprehensive on the helmet, uh, but as more we like we got a better look at them. Now I still still need to see the jerseys in person. Haven't been able to make it make it down to the uh to the pro shop yet. We need to do that, Jay. Um obviously one of the criticisms from people outside of camp, uh outside of the team is the pants. Um, but I think they're gonna look real sharp on this on the field. Um as far as like just personally for me wearing one of those jerseys, we talked about this. Like I'm a little worried about the the color of it because with my skin tone, uh, I'm not sure. Like I haven't had a lot of success with uh t-shirts of that color, but still I I think they nailed it, man. Uh they think they look great. Um the the helmet was also one of the things I was like, uh, I don't know, but it's all the details, man. All the little details that went into the jersey that went into the helmet. I am kind of in the camp of people that say, like, if it had been um black, not teal, I think maybe the black jersey would have looked really good. I don't know how much goes into it with the fact that they are the team uh that they're playing the Colts, and I think the Colts rival jersey is black, right? Or is it all blue? I can't remember. Um, it's black.
SPEAKER_00It is black with blue stripes.
SPEAKER_02Maybe that had something to do with it, like as why they didn't go a black jersey. I know a lot of people are like, why is this team allergic to teal? Like, why don't they use teal? But I think these look great, man. Again, all of the details in the in like the with the uh the neighborhoods being in in the pants, um the the the jerseys, the the font is outstanding. I love that font, man. It looks great. Uh the Bold City font, the Duval, the Since 95, the Jaguar looks out looks great. Can't wait to see these on the field. Uh and it's gonna be such a such whiplash, Jay, to wear these and then go back to wearing their boring jerseys the next week. It's gonna be awful.
SPEAKER_00I wrote that exact exact same thing in the opinion posts that I was doing just to shake the rust off because I haven't been writing a while. And that's the last thing I put in there is we're not gonna want to part ways with those, you know. And you hope that, you know, there's rumors that we'll get new uniforms next year. The elements of the rivalry uniforms are in those uniforms. Because for the first time, it does feel like Nike put the detail in it that we had always been wanting, right? Like a lot of why we were concerned is because Nike was making them. And Nike is good at what they do, right? But they just haven't been good at what they do when it comes to the Jaguars.
unknownYou know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_00Um one one of the things we talked about, this this was back when, you know, we were another form of this podcast with Jacob. Uh, we talked about this with the the ones in 2017 that we, you know, it it was like Tom Coughlin saw a blank palette jersey and said just add some numbers on it, add a stripe or two on it, and let it be. Like it was so bland. Um, this is a you know, this is eon's different from that of a bland jersey, right? Like you said, the details that went into it, the numbers, that um Mardi Gras-like number font that they use, right? The cursive Jaguars emblem, the script, um, cursive bowl city um that's written in the tag, the little small things, the spots in the jersey, right? Which, like I said, they kind of function. I said this in my short form content, they kind of function like a Jaguar would in the wild. From afar, you don't see the spots in the numbers, but when you get closer, then you see them, and it's like, oh wow, like that's pretty unique. I only I don't think I ever seen it done ever. Like, spots in a number. I've seen some crazy things done by Nike. Like we've seen like alligator print jerseys that the gators wore. We've seen all kind of wild stuff, but never seen spots or stripes in a number. So I thought that was unique. Um, I liked it. Um, and yeah, as you said, the helmet, yeah, that does take a little while to grow on. You as did the pants, but the the whole boniker of this whole thing was just being bold, right? Um, in terms of the helmet, it's not normal to see teal helmets, you know what I'm saying? Not just for the Jaguars, but in general, it's not a lot of teal helmets out there. So that kind of throws you off. Um, but make no mistake about it, teal is the primary color of the team, and a lot of people have been complaining about it. And like you said, with us, maybe it had something to do with us playing the Colts, is why we couldn't maybe put that dark color into the jerseys because they have a dark temple, uh template-based jersey. So, what's the next best thing to do? Put it in the helmet, right? And then that chromed out gold face mask, man. Like, like I'm gonna feel like Trinidad James going into the games, man. Like, I might I might bust out some gold heronbone chains to the game, and you you just don't know with me, man. But I'm feeling it. I like it. And not to mention they knocked the Air Max out of the park too. Like, they didn't look all that great in the um the stock photos, but um, you know, when you see them in hand, they look great as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I can't wait to see these on the field. That'll be that early November game here in Jacksonville uh against the Colts, who of course have a very interesting streak in here in Jacksonville. So good opportunity to uh bring out these jerseys. Is there any word on the Prowler jersey for this year? Is that not a thing, or what's what's the deal on that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I think they're gonna wear them this year. I don't know what game uh because like every team wear their that has throwbacks or that brought their throwbacks back. Okay. They wear them.
SPEAKER_02I mean there's so many rules in the NFL when it comes to like who knows like what they're gonna implement and what what they're not. So I'm just like the only the only one of the other criticisms I have of this is uh we talked about it too in our group chat, as I would have liked them to put a new prowler on the sleeve. I think that's a missed opportunity. But again, other than that, man, I think it looks it looks great. Um, I would love for them to carry over this font into the new jersey uh for sure. That is 100%. I don't know if I necessarily need the spots uh on the pants for uh going forward, but um the the font itself uh definitely needs to stay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, leave leave the um the spots solely for the um rivalry uniforms. Like that's a nice little touch just that we need to see once a year. We don't need to see that all year. You know what I'm saying? Like make that unique and specific to a once a year type of thing and a special occasion type of thing. But yeah, I would love to see that uh Mardi Gras numbering on the new jerseys and the same font, the cursive and the script incorporated into the new jerseys.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And the subtlety of the font, of the the spots in the numbers too on the jersey, uh also looks great. So yeah, I can't wait to get my hands on one. Just got to figure out which player I can get without jinxing it. That's another conversation for another time. Uh Jay, anything else you want to discuss before we get out of here? It was good to get back here and uh get an episode out for everybody. Um, like I said, we'll do one more before the season begins. Uh anything else you want to mention before we wrap up?
SPEAKER_00Nah, man, a flawless episode almost. Um, we we cover it it's a lot we could have covered, but no. We're good, man. Uh we're gonna keep this one pretty bare bones, and we'll we'll talk a little bit more about some more stuff later. But nah, nothing else to cover, man. Just glad to be back. Um, glad to have had an um anxiety-free for the most part, anxiety-free off season and preseason, man. So, yeah, man, neither one of us had to take extra blood pressure meds this summer because of the Jaguars. Um, and um, yeah, I was glad to talk about what we saw unfold um because it's been a while.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, it's great to come in and talk some jags, talk about some of the things we're looking forward to, and then next week we'll discuss uh our expectations for the team. But folks, thank you so much for joining us and uh, of course, being patient as there have not been any episodes over the summer. Um, of course, make sure to keep up with us over on social media.
