Episode 145 of Touchdown Jaguars! is here, and it’s time to put our predictions on the record! Phil Barrera and James Johnson make their annual regular season record predictions for the Jacksonville Jaguars, make some bold predictions for players and the roster, and wrap things up with their Super Bowl picks.
We also take a look ahead at some upcoming changes to the format of Touchdown Jaguars! as we get ready for a new era of the podcast.
With the regular season finally here, how confident are we in our predictions?
James Johnson and Phil Barrera bring you the best and most up to date Jacksonville Jaguars news. "Touchdown Jaguars!" is a tribute to the prospective ownership group "Touchdown Jacksonville!" In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams and "Touchdown Jacksonville!" announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists. In November 1993, the NFL owners voted 26–2 in favor of awarding the 30th franchise to Jacksonville. James and Phil have been fans of the franchise ever since and have had the honor (and sometimes dishonor) of covering the team professionally since 2017. The rest as they say, is history.
Welcome to the Touchdown Jaguars Podcast. Here are your hosts, James Johnson and Phil Smith.
SPEAKER_01Hey everyone. Welcome back to the Touchdown Jaguars Podcast. I'm your co-host, Phil Barrera, and with us as always is your other co-host, James Johnson. And Jay, we are just a few days away from the NFL season starting for the Jaguars. By the time this episode comes out, we will have already seen the Thursday night game. What is that? I think Rams, Niners, and Australia or something crazy like that for some reason. But I'm pretty sure the regular season will have already started by the time this episode comes out, which means we are just a couple days away from the Jaguars season opener here at home against the Cleveland Browns. And of course, we are going to discuss everything that we have to look forward to in terms of predictions for our team. That includes record, uh, pr a bold prediction and Super Bowl picks, all of that we are going to discuss here tonight. So, Jay, as we mentioned last week, a ton of optimism heading into the season. And I think that'll probably reflect with the conversation that we have here today about the upcoming year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, man, excited about this upcoming year. As I've mentioned in the last podcast, not to repeat myself, but for the most part, we had a um a stress-free offseason, and that always helps your confidence, right? Um, I will say, um, I'm a little concerned about Parker getting his deal, but I think they'll get it done in the wee hours, right, before uh Sunday gets done uh or Sunday arrives here before they take the field against the the Browns. Um but like, you know, that's a good problem to have. You know what I'm saying? Like normally it's something way more drastic than that that we're worried about, man. So uh yeah, man, excited to talk about these predictions. These episodes are always fun because the predictions never happen, right? They never come into fruition, and we're always off. Um, this is where I have probably the worst track record at evaluating and making calls and predictions on, but it's always fun in games, man. Um, but yeah, man, excited to let the world know what we think um is gonna happen with our Jaguars and what will happen in the NFL in general.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I should have gone back before this episode and and looked at some of those past predictions. I remember one of mine last year was that Travis Hunter would finish in the top vote getting for both offensive and defensive rookie of the year. And hey, maybe that could have happened if he didn't go down. Who knows? Um, what was what was yours? I'm trying to remember.
SPEAKER_03Bro, I can't even remember, man. They probably, whatever it was, it was far off, probably. Um we'll probably have to look at our transcripts in the um the old episode. But yeah, I for I honestly for yeah, bro.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'll have to go back and and look and see. But yeah, like you said, they are uh we don't have a great tr uh track record here when it comes to our uh our bowl predictions. But yeah, guys, we're gonna talk about all that here today. Um, and then of course where we expect the team to end up record-wise, uh discuss our Super Bowl pick, Super Bowl picks, and you know, probably a couple of other things. But yeah, appreciate you guys uh for checking out this episode and for all of you that uh checked out last week's episode as well. And uh yeah, we got a really exciting season uh to look at, uh to look forward to, and uh then we'll also discuss a little bit of news, uh, some changes coming to the podcast and the show here going forward that we will discuss um towards the end of the episode. But Jay, uh let's start with record, I guess. Let's go there. And uh, you know, we did the schedule release during the summer, and um the Jaguars will be playing a first place schedule this year. Uh with that, of course, comes a lot of expectations and a step up in terms of the talent that they will be playing. They've got a couple of primetime games on the docket as well, which is very exciting. Um, but yeah, uh some really solid opponents on here, uh, but also matchups, Jay, that they should definitely be able to take care of. We were kind of discussing this before we got started as far as where we think things are going to end up. We ended up essentially being pretty close. So what do you think? I'll let you go first. What do you see record-wise for the Jaguars?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So um I am gonna go with my heart says go with 10 wins, but I'm gonna go with 11. I'll go with 11. I don't think we'll be um in terms of like the regular season record, I don't think we'll be able to match last year, which I mean that's that's good for like the second best regular season record in Jazz history anyway. So like it's that's gonna be hard to top naturally. You know, I think the only time we've done that was like during the Tom Coughlin era, aside from the time Liam did it. Um, so I think we still will be in good standards. I think we still win the AFC South, to be clear. Um I'm not that much of a believer in the Texans quarterback situation. Um, I think as an overall team, they're pretty good and they can make some noise. But at the end of the day, one day, I mean, you you know, your quarterback's just gonna have to come out there and play quarterback. It is what it is, man. Like, you can't, we we're done with those days of being propelled by your defense, you know, predominantly and making your way into the Super Bowl or whatever the case may be. So um until their quarterbacks start playing better, like I can't take them, and I'm always gonna take the team that has the better quarterback play. Um, you can even throw the Colts in there too. You know, they got a better quarterback play than um what the Texans got going, not a better overall team, but uh better quarterback play. Um, but I think that's what it'll boil down to in terms of the Jaguars winning the division. Um, and I I think that'll also play a key factor in them getting the 11 wins.
SPEAKER_01Man, we were talking about this beforehand. Uh this is specifically Yahoo, um, but I have seen other outlets as well, and they're pretty much sweeping as far as the Houston Texans, as far as who people are picking to win the division, which is crazy to me. And, you know, you mentioned this before we got started. Like a lot of people, of course, you know, are going to accuse us of being homeroids, which there is certainly part of that. But if you have just watched CJ Stroud play quarterback at any point, that yeah, yes, their defense is elite. Like, I I totally get that. That is um that is uh 100% true. Uh really quick, a quick aside to whoever you know in the Chargers organization that pissed off Roger Goodell to have them play Rams and uh Texans back to back poor I would say poor Justin Herbert but I don't really care about that. But whoever did that, I don't know. I don't know who made them upset over there with the Chargers, but I thought that was very funny. But yeah, I just don't see it. I could if there was like a little bit of of a split, I could certain certainly understand. But to for everybody at Yahoo to pick the Texans is kind of crazy to me. Um I also saw Bill, I think was it not not Bill Barnwell. Is it Bill Barnwell who wrote this? Yeah, Bill Barnwell um also has the Jaguars missing the playoffs altogether uh this year, which I I also find pretty crazy. Um of course you have to go into this with tempered expectations because of you know what has happened before. Um things are different now. Um, you know, Blake or Trevor Lawrence is not Blake Bortles, Liam Cohen is not Doug Marone. You know what I mean? There's so many things that are different as far as the team, the culture, the play callers, the, you know, everything that's set in place here. I don't see a 2018 happening um the way that it did. Or I'm not seeing a 2018 repeat itself uh like it did after our AFC championship game run. I also am going to go with 11 wins. Um there are uh you know certainly some teams on here that are going to pose some problems, especially offensively. Uh Dallas is going to be an elite offense. They played them late in the year. Who knows what that looks like. That is the Sunday night football matchup as well. So you just never know what you're gonna get out of this team when they're on prime time. Like you don't want them to embarrass you, and sometimes that's just what happens. And then people get to go, oh, same old Jaguars. You know what I mean? So you expect a split with the Texans. I expect them to split one of those games between Denver and New England. Although I said that like last year in that really crazy stretch they had, remember, with like Niners in Denver and all that, and then they won those games. So who knows? Like it may be they may win these games. I expect them to split and then lose a game that they shouldn't to, like New York or split with Tennessee, or lose to Pittsburgh, you know, games that they definitely should win, but for some reason, you know, some something crazy happened, which which happens at sports. So but I am also going to go 11 wins, Jay, and I feel pretty good about it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, and see on the Stroud thing, right? Um where I can make the argument that it's not being homers, but it's coming from a place of experience. And this is what I mentioned to you is good luck trying to convince any Jaguar fan, bias aside towards the Texans, and bias, you know, in favor of the Jaguars aside, right? Good luck trying to convince us that a quarterback's going to propel you, you know, to a division title and make some noise in the playoffs. And because we've seen this before. We've seen this with Blake Bortles, right? You know, and that's what that that you know that meme that you always put out there of um Hawkeye saying, you know, don't make me believe or whatever it is, uh, don't give me hope or whatever. That's how I feel towards quarterbacks that are propelled by defenses, right? You'll never get me to believe a defense will propel a quarterback to the Super Bowl or through the playoffs. I they can make it to the playoffs, but not through. You know what I'm saying? Um, so that's why I kind of just had a hard time just believing in Strading. Look, this is coming from two people. We sat in a press box when he was drafted and said that's the right pick for the Texans, right? But um, it's just after his rookie year, and you know, he was exposed on film and people got film on him, he has not looked the same since that rookie year, right? Like with more film out there on him. Um, and also, too, man, like sure we lost Devin Lloyd and um ETN, but specifically I want to talk about Devin Lloyd in this case because that the defense is who would face Stroud though. But I mean, like, let's not forget, we were petrified we were gonna lose Anthony Campanely this year, right? And nine times out of ten, when that's the case, when a coach like that gets that kind of attention, that means that that's a pretty good defensive coordinator that you have. And I wouldn't put it past Campanely to, you know, in some way, shape or form become a better, make this defense become a better unit in some way, shape, or form, even without Devin Lloyd. And, you know, don't ask me how he's gonna do it. Well, I mean, I would it would have to be uh because the pass rush in the middle is better, right? Um, so I I'm not even putting it past Campaneley to have a better defense, you know, if we can get that push up in the middle. And if Trayvon Walker can be what I was saying in the last podcast and be healthy, um, if he could be where he, and then then factor in that rotation of defensive ends that I talked about, right? And one dude we didn't even talk about in the rotation as well, because he plays linebacker more. So, but um Dennis Gardett as well. That's another person to add into that mix of that pass rush, too. So um, yeah, man, I I I I like Anthony Cappanini's chances um to at least, you know, um, in one of those meetings with Stroud to hold him um in check.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Like, like you said, uh it's it definitely gives some um like one one more go-added vibes, you know, similar to kind of how um uh what's it, Dan Campbell's coaching staff came, you know, when Aaron Land and Ben Johnson came back, you know, of course it didn't work out very well for the Lions, unfortunately, for things that were out of their control. But yeah, it gives it gives a lot of that similar vibe. Um so we'll we will certainly see. Um but but if anything, like for them to for people to say that they won't even make the playoffs, like if you're gonna sit here and convince me that the Texans can carry them, the defense can carry them to a division championship, I'm not gonna completely argue with that. I I can totally totally see that happen. Um but to say that they might miss the playoffs altogether uh seems pretty outlandish to me. And I I just don't see that happening, barring some kind of just d disaster, you know, like we obviously we're gonna you know continue to bring up 2018. Uh, it just doesn't feel like that. Um, but you know, I mean that's that's why they play the games, as as they say. So we will see uh what happens. Um Jay, what do you think next? We should do um bold predictions. I do actually have yours from last year, and you were pretty close, actually. This has been your best one so far. It's that Liam Cohen was gonna win coach of the year. That was yours last year.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Yeah, I remember that.
SPEAKER_01Now that you mention it, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I went I weren't far off then. Yeah, I think.
SPEAKER_01And listen, technically, allegedly, if it wasn't for a certain reporter at the athletic, maybe he wins.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. Um she would have sabotaged him a little bit better, you know. Then yeah, he would have won. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that was yours last year, and then mine was the Travis Hunter uh offensive and defensive uh rookie of the year. So for me, I'll go first on this one, Jay. Um, we were kind of tossing around some ideas. I know one of the big ones is uh that a lot of people are getting on board with. I think I think Mina Kimes and is it Ben Slowick? I I I might be wrong. I can't remember his last name, but I think they both have picked Trevor Lawrence to win MVP. I know he's a he's kind of a sexy pick right now. Um I do I was thinking about going that you know Trevor Lawrence would be an MVP finalist again, but lose to somebody like a uh like a Caleb Williams, Matthew Stafford, something like that, um, because even if he has better stats, um, even if the team if you know overachieves or has an another another great season, could see him losing again because of Jacksonville's market. Um, considered we talked about Travis Hunter possibly being comeback player of the year, especially because he has a lot of opportunities to make plays on both sides of the football. I am going to go in a crazy, crazy uh like stacked lineup of players who could win this award. I'm gonna go second year in under Campanely that Josh Hines Allen can be a defensive player of the year finalist. I don't think he can win because of Miles Miles Garrett, and then the you know the overwhelming pick as Will Anderson Jr. Um, but I don't know, man. It's just a belief in JHA. I wanted to do something fun as well, and you know, he's getting a lot more respect. And I think with Trayvon Walker continuing to improve and also the the defensive line we expect to be improved, I'm gonna go with that one. I don't think he wins because of the overwhelming competition in the league. But let's go with that. Josh Hydes Allen, defensive player of the year finalist. We'll see him at the award show in the uh beginning of the year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that that's bold, man. Um, because a lot of times what you find is like for the position he plays, a lot of these dudes that get in his way are notching like 17 to 24. Like, I think Miles Garrett had like 23 sacks last year. I looked at and I was like, Here's the thing with the Rams.
SPEAKER_01Like, what? What if they all just what if they all just share sacks and like none of them, none of them get a full team full of like 12, 13 sacks, you know.
SPEAKER_03And then Josh Hines Allen ended up getting more than that. I never thought of that. Right. Um good good thinking there, good thinking there. Um, I like that idea though, because um the nation respects Josh Hines Allen more than the dare I say the fan base. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, for sure at times, yeah. Whenever those sack numbers aren't aren't up, people turn on Josh Hines Allen like it's nothing, like no one's business. I don't get it.
SPEAKER_03Right. But yeah, PFF routinely, and this is speaking for the nation's perspective, routinely has him like rated as 85 or better, right? You know, like and um, you know, Matt normally has him as a top-rated um player on defense, right? That just kind of shows you the nation's perspective of him as a as opposed to um the fan bases. So yeah, no, I can see that. So I can see like AP voters um looking at Josh Hines Allen in that same lens as the rest of the nation as well and giving him a chance at that, right? And I mean that kind of syncs up with what I've said. Like, if we can get the interior pass rush that we need, yeah, you know, he he would get more of a spotlight and he would get better SAT figures, right? If, you know, um Eric Armstead can provide that push and stay healthy, or if Albert Regis um can, you know, play outside of his mind as a rookie, right? Because we all know playing defensive tackle as a rookie is kind of difficult, but you know, maybe he could provide that push. Rookie Aurora, you know what I'm saying, can provide that push. Like hopefully that rotation of three that I mentioned can get the push in the middle to help him and Trayvon Walker. Like, you know, we might even hear Trayvon Walker get, like, he might not get all pro consideration, but if the pocket push is there, we might start hearing him get like Pro Bowl consideration, right? Or maybe not um into the top 100, because I do feel like in these top 100 votes, he has to be somewhere like just outside of like the first 10 outside of the top 100 voter-wise. You know, I've never seen the ballot, but he he's gotta be knocking on the door somewhere. Um, so yeah, yeah, that's not a bad one, but that that definitely is bold because he's probably gonna have to, you know, battle somebody as that's looking at even if it's not um Miles Garrett, he's probably gonna be battling somebody that's looking at 17 to 20 sets in the process.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I I agree. And uh yeah, so uh again, it's just kind of a belief in in an expectation, like we like everything you just said, and we what we talked about last week in terms of uh an upgrade to the defensive line and the defense just in general. So yeah, that's what I'll I'll go with. Belief in in JHA. We're gonna go with uh with our guy there. Jay, what about you? I know you also had a couple written down. Where are you going? What what do you got for your bull prediction this year?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I had a a multitude of ones um that I was gonna, you know, that I had under consideration, just so me and you didn't have the same thing. I just went with multiple options. So I start with the ones that are um less likely to happen, possibly. Um, I also, me and you discussed this beforehand. I also consider Travis Hunter for combat player of the year. But I think what we settled on is like, is that really that bold? He's really like one of the most popular players in the league. Um, so I think that's where we ended up with that. Um Foyer becoming an all-pro. Um, I do think that's less likely to happen because he's not a household name, despite leading the league in tackles at one point in time, right? I think that was two years ago that he did that. Um, but I do think the option is there for him, the opportunity is there for him to really stand out this year with Devin Lloyd not playing beside him, right? Um, so that leaves a lot of opportunity for him to make tackles. Um one that I think is a little bit more likely to happen, Cam Little becoming an all-pro. And um I can see that happening because he has the leg strength, right? And despite the bias against Jacksonville, it's just hard to miss a special teamer when they're balling out, right? Like, even last despite him playing for the Jaguars, everybody knows Cam Little as a household name at this point because he kicked the longest field goal in damn near history. You know what I'm saying? So, like, you know, for a specialist, I don't think that bias of playing for the Jaguars hurts a specialist. And we've already, you know, seen proof of that. Ross Matisick isn't, you know, an all-pro. So, and y'all better put some respect on our long snapper name, too, man. I was watching the um the hunt fill, and uh Ross Matisic made a tackle on the sideline, and I think it was against the Bucs in the um the preseason, and they got all rowdy, start trying to push him, and Foyer come up in there and like, hey man, you better respect that all pro it's so weird uh hearing somebody say that about a long snapper, but hey, he is indeed an all pro. But I think the one that I think I feel the most confidence in is Antonio Johnson. And leading the league in interceptions. He was second and tired for second with multiple people that had five in the league last year, as it was. So he wasn't that far off from it. And just to add a little bonus to it, I think Antonio Johnson could be an all-pro. He was already PFF's top-rated safety. So there is that. You know, even though PFF, I don't even think they put him in their top 10 rankings this year. Come on, like, what are y'all doing? But I think he could be an all-pro. The only thing is he plays in, like, you know, they play kind of a rotation at safety. So that that might hurt him depending on the snap count and what have you. But no, man, when you look at his um his PFF stats, aside from his total grade, and I say the snapshot here as well, Phil, to just kind of read how out of his mind he played last year. Let me pull that up, right? Um, so yeah, um it says here that he was exemplary in coverage, right? And his um coverage grade was 87.6, man. Like, I don't think I've ever heard a coverage grade like that associated with a safety in terms of the Jags history ever, right? That's insane, right? He's knocking on 90 in a coverage grade. And um, you know, we're talking about a guy we got late in the draft, right? What fifth round pick, something like that. Um, but Anthony Campanili, man, just my belief in him. And, you know, this is one of the reasons I believe in him is him tapping into the the potential of these late-round picks like Antonio Johnson, like Monterik Brown, who was a sixth-round pick, right? Sixth or seventh-round pick. Like all of these guys played at least at a Pro Bowl level last year. And I think Anthony Campanili um is gonna get one guy into um all pro consideration, and I think it would be Antonio Johnson when it's all said and done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I love that. I tend to stay away from safety predictions after my Andre Cisco one a couple of years ago. So I will leave Antonio Johnson out of that for his sake and for everyone's sake. Was that mine's or yours? The Cisco? Uh I I had a prediction on Cisco one. I'm pretty sure I had Cisco. I'm pretty sure I had a Cisco one. I was like all in on Cisco.
SPEAKER_03Uh you got the jersey in here. Yeah, I still have.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the Cisco jersey somewhere in this house that'll never see the light of day ever again. So um yeah, so uh no, I I I like that one. Uh at least as far as the the all-pro one, like you said, you know, it's definitely we'll see because they do use that rotation and um, you know, the way that they scheme things up. But no man, I have a lot of belief in him, and obviously the coaching staff does, so I I could certainly see that one happening. Uh another one I do want to throw out here, Jay, that I did think about is that speaking of Cam Little is that he would break his own record this year and continue to move the goalpost for that longest field goal in NFL history. Um so we'll love to see that one happen. That would be uh a fun move as well. But yeah, my I I love that one. I I have a lot of expectations for um for him as for uh for Antonio Johnson as well. We both went defense. Did you have any that like you thought about on the offensive side? I thought about like maybe I could go just as a throwback, I'd go, you know, um Brenton Strange would leave the team and touchdown catches, go back to the tight end. Well shout out to my guy, uh uh who is that, Oliver. Josh Oliver. Still in the league, though, I think, right?
SPEAKER_03I think so, man. Shout out to Josh Oliver, man. Hey, in your defense, man, Josh Oliver had traits, bro. He did, man. Not to sound like Trent Balkey, but he had he had the makings of um He's still with the Vikings. Yeah. Yeah, man. He's he's made he's had a long career.
SPEAKER_01A total of four touchdowns career time. Oh, wait, no, that's 2025. What's his overall? Let's see how many how many touchdowns he's had in his career. 11.
SPEAKER_03Watch like he get like six more this year or something crazy. Hey, man, it's time. He's gonna break out any year now. Yeah, yeah. Um, but yeah, I had one offense that went um the Jaguars could lead the like the offense. Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Lead the league and scoring. I can see that too. Yeah. I can see that too. They were up there already towards the like the back half of the year. Weren't they? Didn't they lead the league and scoring?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think like they led the league and scoring during during like after during the winning streak, I think. Yeah, it was like good days, man. I mean, and look, man, they have the weapons, bro. Like, look, bro, we're talking about paying Parker Washington like $25 million a year. And it's possible he might, we might not even get a thousand yards out of him because we got so many weapons. Now, I think Parker Washington still will notch a thousand yards. I wouldn't be shocked if he led the team and receiving yards, honestly. Um, still, but you know, there is a possibility that we could pay him a lot of money and he might not even like hit a thousand yards because we just got that many weapons.
SPEAKER_01I did think about going Alan Bros prediction with two 1,000 yard receivers, too. Two out of the three, whether it be whatever that combination is, Myers, War Washington, PTJ.
SPEAKER_03Right. Yeah, yeah, it'll be interesting, man. It's they have so many weapons, man. It's really hard to figure out um what will transpire statistically with those receivers, you know, and even with the run game, they have so many weapons there. And then, like, you know, you have to worry about will Brenton Strange get his, you know, like that's why I strayed away from any Brenton Strange related predictions. Um, I I I thought he could be an all-pro. And then I thought about it, I'm like, it's too many weapons around him, you know. So um, that's a good problem to have, though. Like, I'm I'll never complain about having an abundance of receiving options, man. Like, never.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I agree. Before we get to, yes, especially, I think we talked about this last week. Like, remember just what was it, you know, five years ago where we were anytime there was a you know a wide receiver cut, we were like, oh, we need to get that guy. Now it's like, well, no, we don't need a receiver. We're we're good now. It's it's just a crazy place to be as a Jaguar fan.
SPEAKER_03Um so uh before um Slayton uh what where is he gonna play? Right.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no, we don't need that. Not around not around here, Padner, not around here. So um before we get into our Super Bowl pick here, Jay, do you have um a selection for MVP? Um have you thought about that at all on the just a on the on the grand scale, grand scheme of things?
SPEAKER_03I have not.
SPEAKER_01Um I mean You want to go over these Yahoo um predictions really quick? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Go ahead. All right. So for the Yahoo, um, we got, and I'm not familiar really with with too many of these except for Nate Tice um and Josh Norris. Um, but uh we got Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, uh three Dak Prescott's and then two more Josh Allen. So three Josh Allen's, three Jack Dak Prescott's, a Lamar, and a Joe Burrow.
SPEAKER_03I'm I'm not going Josh Allen.
SPEAKER_01Um I'm definitely not going Josh Allen Mr. Man, they're making excuses for him. Did you see the I didn't watch the segment because I try to stay away from ESPN as much as possible? Did you see that they ran a segment that was like Josh Allen has done enough to win a Super Bowl, just has not won a Super Bowl? Like, well then why hasn't he won? I almost cussed. Why hasn't he won a damn Super Bowl? Like, what do you mean? Yeah. And then it was um who's who's uh who's the guy over on Fox who's uh he's one of our like our biggest supporters. He's a big Trevor Lawrence fan. What's his name? Uh guy said Fox. Well, P pre Prisco with CBS, so not him. No, he's on he's on that Fox um like oh Nick Wright. Nick Wright, yeah. And he said, when you think about Josh Allen's most memorable games, they're all losses. None of them are wins.
SPEAKER_03That's so true. Oh my god, I never thought of that. It was yeah, epic games by him, but end up being losses, man. Like and they did the Bills just got this, they still got that that that stigma, man, that uh what it was Jim Kelly that went to like four uh AFC championships or something like that, or Super Bowls. Super Bowls.
SPEAKER_01Like they went to like three Super Bowls in a row, right? Three or four? Um I I I don't think I I'm I it can acknowledge that Joe Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but also like how much he's in the Justin Herbert conversation. At least he's been to a Super Bowl though. Like, I'll give him that. Like they went to a Super Bowl. But like Joe Burrow can't stay healthy, you know. They post the same no-look pass of him every summer to get people. It's from that was like five years ago. That was like pre-pandemic, that throw.
unknownLike, we're going.
SPEAKER_01Like, what are we doing with Joe Burrow, man? And then meanwhile, you know, Lamar Jackson continues to do his thing and he has to prove himself every year. You know what I mean? Like, it just doesn't make any sense to me. So um my I I think my pick, I I go with some of these other people is Dak Prescott just because of the weapons. Um, I'm kind of like cautiously buying into this Dallas Cowboys hype, but we have to see how the defense plays. Um, but I think like Caleb Downs is gonna have like a crazy effect on that defense. I'm I'm very high on him, but I I can see Dak Prescott winning it um because of the star and because of the weapons. So I think I'm gonna go Dak Prescott. Um Aaron Donald. They're gonna give him a legacy MVP award because he should have won it a couple of years ago.
SPEAKER_03Oh wow. Yeah, I mean, with Aaron Donald, I don't think um I don't think you could take that many years off and and go back to that level of play. No, no, no. Yeah, no, yeah, yeah, I know you were joking.
SPEAKER_01I also don't think a defensive player will ever win the award just because of the quarterbacks.
SPEAKER_03That's so true. That's so true. Yeah, man, I I'm not high on any of those. I mean, like, I like Lamar, um, but Stafford. Yeah, I was about to say, dare I would go back. Well, Sam Darnold. You know, I mean, he got Jackson Smith and Jick, but man, uh, who I love. I like oof, man, that that's that's a hell of a receiver, man. Um, but Sam Darnold, no. Um, I I think I I feel better with Stafford again, man. Um so yeah, and just the the Stafford and McVeigh connection, right? And then, you know, maybe I don't even know like that you need the fuel or that he needs any fuel to his fire, but you know, they got a quarter, a young quarterback behind him, right? You know, who, you know, they they're kind of putting in that boat to kind of, you know, knock him out of the way eventually, like kind of like Rogers and Favre, you know, type of thing. Um, so like I don't think Matthew Stafford is like necessarily looking at it like that, but at the same time, um, he's such a dynamic player that it's something that he just won't won't flat out overlook, right? And he won't give him any reason to be like, hey, we need to go to this kid um next year. So yeah, I I would I would take Stafford probably right off the top of my head.
SPEAKER_01Who do you think could be like this year's Drake May, like a guy that ends up in that conversation that wasn't last year? Um I'm trying to think about younger guys. Um maybe this is the year, I don't know. I just feel like I've seen enough out of Jordan Love to know that like he's just he's a good quarterback, but like he's not gonna reach Rogers or Favre level as far as what he is, which which is still again, like I said, a good quarterback, but like never gonna win an MVP. I'm trying to think of like who that young QB could like could Kyler Murray come in and like kill it in in Minnesota, you know what I mean? Like stranger things have happened in Minnesota. Look at Sam Darnold.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's so true. Um, I and I like their head coach too. I I like the Kyler Murray to um Vikings connection. I do too. Yeah, I I I thought that was a good, you know, a good call on their part, man. Uh Kevin McConnell, that's his name, isn't it? Um, yeah, like, you know, from the same tree with Liam, you know what I'm saying? Uh so if anybody can get Kyler Murray right as him. So um, yeah, like he he's the one that really come to mind when it comes to like filling the shoes of what Drake May did last year. Um, I'm trying to think of are we missing any course? Bo Nicks. I like Bo Nicks. Who did they just add?
SPEAKER_01They had a Jaden Jalen Waddle, so you know Yeah, I like Bo Nicks.
SPEAKER_03I actually got the Broncos making some noise. Like some people had them not even making the playoffs. Like, I think the Broncos. Nah, they're too good, man. They're too good. Yeah, I like them. I I think the Broncos even like Tyler Shuck. People like Shuck. Well, good luck making me like Shuck. Um just for Atlanta purposes.
SPEAKER_01I don't know who he's throwing the ball to. Right. He's getting the ball off to A-chan.
SPEAKER_03I think um at like nine wins. I don't think they'll make the playoffs, but they'll be they'll be knocking on the door.
SPEAKER_01So nine wins could that's that's overachieving in the NFC South. That's that's two more wins than you need. That is. That's so true. Case in point the Panthers, right? Like maybe Bryce is like it's a is it the Bryce Young year, you know what I mean? Like I don't know. There's always there's always a guy. And last year we got two, you know, we got Bo Nicks and Drake May. Uh, you know, and and I'm gonna throw Trevor in there. Like no one expected Trevor Lawrence to be an MVP finalist.
SPEAKER_03Like that's true. Even though he had been in the the voting before with Doug, you know. Uh yeah. So yeah, nobody was expecting it. Um not but I like that Kyler Murray one, man. I just like the McConnell offense. I like um, and I've always liked Kyler Murray, you know, like I know it was all of this stuff about him. Um like people didn't think he was dedicated enough um when he was in Arizona, but I don't I don't see a kid that's not dedicated enough to football, man. And I, you know, I think like now he especially understands that with um you know, with him being booted out of Arizona, right? You know, and now he has a coach that um understands how to um to connect with quarterbacks. Like that tree has always done well with connecting with quarterbacks, regardless of who it Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff before he got shipped off to the Lions. Now Liam here with with Trevor Lawrence, they always have found a way to tap into quarterback potential, you know, or in in the Rams case, you know, um make a quarterback that's older play at an MVP level, right? In Matthew Stafford's case. So they've always been able to get just more out of quarterbacks than you expect them to be able to get. So yeah, I like that Kyler Murray one, man.
SPEAKER_01There's also just this weird, this is gonna come off as disrespectful because obviously I'm not keeping up with Cardinals football. Post-Larry Fitzgerald Cardinals just has this weird aura of like a franchise that I don't take seriously. And they probably feel the same way about Jacksonville. Like, Cardinals fans aren't paying attention to Jacksonville Jaguar football, nor would I expect them to. We play each other every four years, and that's the only time we talk about each other. But like just something about the franchise post-Larry Fitzgerald, uh like nothing has gotten me, you know, even though it was Kyler for like a little bit. Um, Jeremiah Love is like their running back too. Like, who what are they like the Cardinals are like the Sacramento Kings of football? Like they're just they they you know, they had their run, like they had a little bit of a, you know, made some noise in the early 2000s and um late 90s or whatever, you know. So like that's just who they remind me of. Um I don't know. I can't explain it, but again, um no Cardinals fans are gonna listen to this. But if you do, I apologize. I'm not trying to disrespect you. I I would love to know how you feel. But that's how I feel. So like, yeah, maybe maybe it's Kyler getting away from there. So um, but yeah, let's get to the Super Bowl picks here, Jay. I'll throw out again some more from uh I'm just going with Yahoo because they have the best as far as presentation between what I pulled up, between Yahoo, USA Today, and ESPN. ESPN is a jumbled mess. USA Today, the website doesn't even work properly, so I'm not even gonna acknowledge them. But um, the Super Bowl predictions, Super Bowl picks here for Yahoo are a lot of Rams. Lots of Rams, uh, pretty much a lot of Rams. Some of the other matchups I'm here seeing, I'm seeing uh Rams, Bills, Rams, Ravens, some Rams, Texans, which I find crazy. Um, uh Texans Cowboys, an all-Texas Super Bowl from Nate Tice. Um, Rams, Broncos, I think would be an interesting one. Um, and then another Rams-Bills. So lots of lots of LA Rams here, Jay. It's pretty much it's it's obviously Super Bowl or bust for for that team. I'll ask you this before you give your pick. Um, would you take the Rams or the Field? And the NFC?
SPEAKER_03Sure. Or just the NF, just the whole league in general. Um, and I'll explain why later, but no.
SPEAKER_01No, you wouldn't take the Rams? No. Oh, okay. Yeah. All right. Well, I'll go first because I don't want to I don't want to jinx them. Uh as we talked about before we got started. I don't want to jinx this one. Once upon a time, I picked Jags Cowboys. This was before I think we did any podcasting, but I predicted Jags Cowboys in the Super Bowl, and I think I think they had like one of their worst seasons. It was just a big time regression year. I think those were in the it had to have been in either the Gerard or or Bort Portals days. I definitely put them in the Super Bowl after the AFC championship game in 2017, but I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go Rams, Ravens. I think the Ravens have a big bounce back year. New head coach, a rev a revitalized Lamar Jackson, hopefully I think maybe an angry Lamar Jackson that his name is getting kind of like disrespected and thrown around out there like people forgot what he is capable of doing. Um I would, I know when it comes to Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, of course, you know, those two guys are, you know, they neither one of them have been able to, you know, make it to the mountaintop yet, but I'm just going to respect Lamar Jackson for the player that he is. We've always been big fans of his, of course. You know, could have changed the whole history of the Jacksonville Jaguar organization. Who knows where we'd be right now if if they tick him instead of Tave McBride? So yeah, give me give me Rams Ravens. I don't feel super great about it on one half of that on September 9th. So we'll see how we feel in a few months. Um, and then I do have I I'm just buying into the Rams hype because they already had a really good team, and then they added one of two of the best defensive players of all time, two top five defensive players of all time. And uh, you know, I'm gonna believe in Matthew Stafford. I think Matthew Stafford can win one on his way out, and they have another, you know, they got another Super Bowl there in SoFi Stadium. So that's where I'm going, Jay Rams Ravens. What about you? How do you feel about that first? And then yeah, what's your pick?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I like it. Um I like Jesse Mentor, their new head coach, man. Highly coveted. Um, I think he's the guy that um even though he's a defensive coach, right? Uh in some ways he feels like Liam in terms of he's not that far removed from uh being a college coach, right? Um and his his trajectory kind of feels like a Liam Cohen-like trajectory in that sense. Um and I think like when you get coaches that that's like that closely removed from college, um, you really get a coach that players uh gravitate to. Those are generally like really good players, coaches, and I think they'll play their behind off forum. Um so I like that pick. Um I have the Ravens like making some noise, and like um, I think they get taken out in the second round in my playoff uh playoffs um by us, by the way. Um, so yeah, no, I I like that. I like that. And then Rams, um, I totally agree with you. Like, you know, my only thing is I didn't have the Rams winning the Super Bowl, but I think the Rams also are going to the Super Bowl, right? And to um go ahead and just uh go into my predictions here, I had them playing us in the Super Bowl, and that's the reason I can't take the Rams because I will never not put the Jaguars in the Super Bowl and not think we can win it. At that point, it's a 50-50 coin flip at that point, in my opinion. Um so it regardless of the teams, right? It's it's pretty much 50-50 at that point. Um, but yeah, man, like, you know, it I thought about this, man. Um part of what you said kind of resonates with me um in terms of who to put in an AFC. A lot of those teams don't feel right to put in AFC. So with that being the case, I was like, well, why not put us there? You know, um, like you said, the Ravens don't feel right to be there because they haven't gone there in forever, right? And it's always something that pops up in the playoffs that prevents. It's the Ravens from going to the Super Bowl. It's always something weird, man. You know, as much as I love Lamar, and I think he's the best quarterback in the league, and he's an MVP caliber quarterback. There are times when he gets in the playoffs and he he throws like three picks. You know what I'm saying? And that that's what comes with the territory. That's football for you, right? Um, especially playoff football. You know, sometimes you'll play, you won't play to your potential as a quarterback position. That's just kind of how the ebbs and flows of playing quarter quarterback in the uh the playoffs. But um, yeah, they didn't feel exactly right to put there. The Bills don't feel right to put there because they all, as we already mentioned, the Josh Allen effect always kick in at some point in the playoffs. Um, the Texans didn't feel right because I'm not putting them in there with their quarterback situation. So I thought about it, man. I was like, why not the Jags, man? I mean, I know a lot of people say um the mindset that we've always had is, and me and you talked about this, is like, um, next year is the year. Next year is the year. And I feel like that's what every team that makes the playoffs by surprise is saying the year they make the playoffs. It's like next year is the year, and they make it a year earlier than they were expecting. I I feel like that's the year I felt good all through the summer about this team and how they're going about business. Um, but like I said, it was anxiety-free for the most part this offseason. Also, the the the improvement of Anthony Campanili that I mentioned is well feel. Um I do feel like we got three head coaches on this team, right? And a lot of times that that can get you to the Super Bowl. Like between him, of course, Liam, who's a current head coach, and Grant Udinsky as well. Um, even though Grant Udinski hasn't really called plays, but he's a he's highly intelligent. You know what I'm saying? Very, very smart offensive coordinator that, you know, I think would figure it out as a head coach. Um, and I don't, I don't think um I could see a world in next year where you know we're preparing, we need a new offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. If that's the case, then that means we're a Super Bowl caliber team. If we're losing both of those play uh those coaches like we believe we will, then I believe we should be in the Super Bowl. Now, in terms of my expectations, now, my expectations, I wouldn't be mad if we got in the playoffs won one round and then we're out because that means we exceeded what we did last year, right? Yeah, we would come up short, but I wouldn't be exactly mad with that. Um, but I think we go all the way, man. I think we go all the way. I think we get that rematch with the Bills in the AFC Championship, you know. I think we win that as well, because I don't trust the Bills to go to a Super Bowl um at all. Um, and then like I said, with the Rams, um just Sean McVay. Um, I don't even know what kind of player Aaron Donald would be at that point of the year. But it even if you take out Aaron Donald, right? They still got Kobe Turner. They still got Miles Garrett on defense, they still got a loaded defense as well. Um, they still got a loaded offense. They still got Matthew Stafford, who I just said is going to be the MVP of the league, right? So that just kind of sums up um what I feel about them. And I do feel like Sean McVay is at a point, you know, and we could kind of feel this during the draft when they drafted a quarterback. I think Sean McVay is at a point where he just wants to maybe win one more Super Bowl and just go on about his business, right? Just call it quits. And um, the sooner we can get him out of the league, the better. I mean that in a good way. That means we won't have to deal with him, and Liam don't have to deal with him anymore. So I I get vibes of that too. Like that, you know, he wants to get there one more time and then he'll, you know, he'll retire or whatever the case may be, as young as he is. So I will take us with all that considered and the Rams, and um, I would take us for the win there, man. And I and I felt this way long before Pete Prisco did. I'm gonna be honest with you. I have been saying this in my mind, I didn't tell anybody until now, um, aside from Jazz. Um I would say in about June or July, I could feel something in June or July in terms of what they were doing at training camp.
SPEAKER_01So I'm I'm gonna roll with that. Hey man, I am not mad about it whatsoever. I would love to be if if any year that I I'm ready to be incorrect, it is this one. Um and I and I want to echo some of the stuff you said as well. I would be very happy with a of course an AFC an AFC championship run as well. Um divisional, divisional round bare minimum. Um, but again, like you said, with with us probably going into next year, needing a new offensive and defensive coordinator, you got to take advantage of this the way that Detroit was not able to, you know. And again, what happened with Detroit, things that are totally out of their, you know, out of their hands. They're they're pretty much their entire defense was on the sideline um in cast, looking like that guy from SpongeBob, uh, like in full body cast, man. Like, dude, the the that I I as the the Lions, the Lions were my first ever NFL fandom to see them get so close and then just you know everything fall apart really bums me out. So I hope that doesn't happen here to my current favorite franchise. Um so I would love to see this happen, but yeah, I would be very happy and expect bare minimum a divisional championship game uh champional champ uh divisional round appearance and you know them to be uh competitive all the way through. Um yeah. Isn't it weird, Jay? We got through this whole conversation of this near near the end of this episode. We ain't talk about the Chiefs or Patrick Mahomes once. Well, I don't even know what what to do with that team.
SPEAKER_03Oh, on that. Uh we'll we'll get on them in a little bit. And I appreciate you not taking the jazz because if you did, they would not make it. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_01I know what I know what's happening here. I know, I know what to know.
SPEAKER_03So I appreciate uh you you doing that. Um and one more thing I want to add too, man, is like we I just talk about this belief in Liam so much, right? You know, like I feel like it's about time for me to put my money where my mouth is and just like fully believe in the man. Like I said it would be coach of the year last year. Um, so yeah, man, I just have such a belief in him too. Um, that it's like Jay, it's time to like really commit to um putting your money when your mouth is in terms of believing in Liam. Um on the Chiefs, yeah, I have them making the playoffs um this year. Uh I think they will get um eliminated. I forgot what round it was. Um I think I got him as a like a first round exit, right? Um, but they this is the thing we've said is man, the Chiefs won't be down long, Phil. And um, I think we'll see um them start to get back to themselves this year, not all the way, but start to get back to themselves because like I just believe Brett Beach just drafts well, you know what I'm saying? Like, and um with that being the case, man, he like two more draft this draft class and like maybe next year's draft class, and they're back to like championship caliber. So that's another reason we need to take advantage of like freaking them, you know, being not not necessarily down, but not who they were two years ago.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, remember Buffalo's been that two years in a row and they can't get it done. But everybody loves loves Josh Allen, man. I don't get it. But um but that's what we got here, guys, as far as uh, you know, so um record predictions, bowl predictions, and then our Super Bowl picks. Would love to see uh Jay B. Wright on uh that Super Bowl pick specifically. And it would be just very Jaguar of them to win that win a Super Bowl heading into a season where we won't be playing in Jacksonville whatsoever. Um, I guess it would be pretty fitting for that to happen uh either between this year or next year when they're playing in Orlando altogether. So um, yeah, we'll see. Yeah, I got one more question, bro.
SPEAKER_03Um, even though it was a blowout, though, and this is kind of how I came to this game for the Super Bowl, even though it was a blowout when we played the Rams, did it not feel like one day that could be a Super Bowl matchup if the Jaguars caught up? That's okay. That's another reason I chose it. Like it felt I was like, I feel like I'm looking at a Super Bowl. I just feel like one team, of course that was us, um, one team just isn't ready to take the torch just yet.
SPEAKER_01I felt that way about the Sea, like I felt that way less about the Seahawks game, but but certainly I felt it about the Rams. Um the Seahawks. I I had a feeling about the Seahawks right after, like, because that was really the first time I had paid attention to them. And like seeing them running on all cylinders like that was in person not in person, but you know, here in Jacksonville was like, oh, like there are levels to what's going on.
SPEAKER_03Elite front office. John Snyder, elite front bro. They're root, they're like the the Rams in terms of coaching, but they're in executive-wise, their roots are all over the league, man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I would love to go to a Seahawks game one day in in that stadium. Um, you know, they got a great fan base. Uh Seattle's a great city. So yeah. Yeah. We'll see what happens. Uh, but yeah, guys, that's our uh predictions episode for 26-27. Very much looking forward to it. Um, to kind of wrap up the episode here, we we uh teased there in the beginning that there's gonna be some changes to the show here for the upcoming season. Um so after uh, you know, just uh a lot of discussion with Jay and um come coming to the realization that I have less and less time to commit to the show than I used to. Um, this has definitely been an off-season where I've been able to spend the least amount of time keeping up with the team, especially when it comes to OTAs and training camp and preseason and things like that. So I will be taking a little bit of a step back from the show. I'll still be posting on social media, specifically Twitter, um, directly from the podcast page and my personal page, so make sure to continue to follow there. Um I just likely, you know, and this kind of started last year as well, where I likely will not be able to be on the show each and every single week. I'm definitely gonna do my best whenever my schedule allows me to. Um, but between the voice acting and then doing more conventions with the Wayfore podcast and things like that, um, you know, I think it's time for me to take a little bit of a step back. Jay's gonna be re-evaluating uh how he, you know, gets the content out there as well. Um, but I'll still be around um in terms of helping out the show as uh, of course, but just may not hear my voice as much as you have in past seasons. Um, and that's just again, new life getting getting busier and you know, for good reasons. But um, yeah, just wanted to uh talk about that as we head into the regular season here, Jay. Uh, you know, we've been through so many iterations of this show between um, you know, the Jags Den and then Believe in the Jaguars, and then now this, and then you know, even projects well before that. So, you know, I'll still be around, Jay. But yeah, it's um unfortunate because just getting busier and busier, haven't had time to commit that I am that I owe to you and also owe it to the audience. So that's what's gonna be happening here going forward. But but you know, I'll still be around, right, Jay. So we'll uh that's how it's gonna go.
SPEAKER_03Hey, man. Understandable, man. Life be life in, as we say, you know. Um, so and it's it's it was times where I found myself um not able to dedicate to the team as much as I have. Now, I have been this offseason, thank God. Um, but yeah, man, no, that's understandable, man. Um, we always know you'll be around. Um, as you said, I'll be re-evaluating some things and trying to figure out a format for the podcast in the meantime. But as y'all have seen, I've been pretty active online, more so on social media. And uh it people have been very responsive to that. Uh, so I'm not going anywhere. Um, in that regard, even though I, you know, it might require me to record a little bit less. That gives me more time to dedicate to the social shoe social media aspect of it and short form media aspect of it. As y'all see, I've been doing a lot of short form media weekly now. Um, and um also, too, we're working on a new site. I know our old site isn't working anymore. Working on a new site too as well, so that'll be up soon, too, man. But um, no, yeah, definitely understandable. And um, yeah, man, we regardless of um what happens with the season, man, we look forward for whatever tapes you can provide. And we, you know, when you can jump in still, uh no hard feelings, man. But um, hey, man, regardless, we're still going to that Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_01So it's our what I when I what is gonna happen is I will be here every week the closer we get to that Super Bowl. So that's not gonna be that's not gonna be a problem. The week-to-week stuff, you know, the uh, you know, that might get a little rough or a little busier in the beginning of the year, but as we get closer, uh you'll be, you know, rest assured, I'll be around. Right. Right. So uh yeah, but yeah, Jay's been putting out content over on our Instagram page, doing that short form content, like he said. Um so just make sure to follow us over there on social media. Um make sure to click the Linktree link in the show notes of this episode. And uh yeah, that's where we will be. Uh, we're still gonna put out a ton of content, um, primarily over on Twitter. So if you're if you're there, check us out. Um, and then we'll, you know, we'll try and get as much of that over to like an Instagram feed. I know a lot of people aren't on Twitter for for good reason. It's understandable. So if you use like um, you know, if you use Instagram, maybe we'll try and get we'll we'll we'll make a better effort to try and get some of that content over there as well. Breaking news, things like that, you know, um injury reports, stuff, things of that nature. So it's all kind of fluid, and we just want to make sure that we're still giving you guys uh the best possible coverage that we can uh within also within our limits as well. So yeah. Jay, anything else you want to mention to the audience before we look forward to week one, man? Uh Cleveland's coming to town. They're for some reason starting Sean Watson at quarterback. And I know the uh the the the Duval faithful will greet him um properly. I'll say that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, nothing else to say, man. Excited about the season, man. Um excited to see, you know, how they especially the start of the season goes, you know. It's a it's it's a little tough at the start of the season, man. But um, yeah, no, I can't wait, man.
SPEAKER_01Excited, man. We're approaching the best time of the sports season. Uh, you know, college football started up as well. We're right around the corner from the from MLB playoffs. Uh hockey starts off again here pretty soon. Um the NBA starts up here soon. So, like, man, it's a great, a great time, great time of the year for sports fans. So, uh, folks, once again, make sure to click the link tree link in the show notes of this episode. Keep up with us over on social media. That is James Johnson, your co-host. I am Phil Barrera, and thank you so much for listening to Touchdown Jaguars week one ahead. We'll get you all covered uh throughout the entire season. We appreciate you guys rocking with us, and we will see you next time.
