James Johnson and Phil Smith bring you the best and most up to date Jacksonville Jaguars news. "Touchdown Jaguars!" is a tribute to the prospective ownership group "Touchdown Jacksonville!" In 1991, the NFL announced plans to add two expansion teams and "Touchdown Jacksonville!" announced its bid for a team, and Jacksonville was ultimately chosen as one of five finalists. In November 1993, the NFL owners voted 26–2 in favor of awarding the 30th franchise to Jacksonville. James and Phil have been fans of the franchise ever since and have had the honor (and sometimes dishonor) of covering the team professionally since 2017. The rest as they say, is history.

Speaker 1:Welcome to the Touchdown Jaguars podcast. Here are your hosts, james Johnson and Phil Smith. Hey everyone, welcome back to the Touchdown Jaguars podcast. I am your co-host, phil Smith, and joining me, as always, is your other co-host, james Johnson, and Jay, we are joining you.
Speaker 1:Well, we're recording here this evening on Sunday night of October 6th, but this episode will be out on a victory Monday, and it has been a very long time since we've been able to say those words here, jay, when it comes to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 1:But as hard as they tried, as hard as the defense tried to give this game away, the Jacksonville Jaguars did come out with their first victory of the season here in the beginning of October. So you know, as you mentioned, jay, before we got started, whenever they win, the episodes pretty much write themselves, and that's what's going to happen here this evening, while we spent the last couple of weeks discussing the future of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and a lot of those things and a lot of those opinions still have not changed. We will discuss the present of the team and how they will maybe carry this momentum going forward over the next few weeks. So, jay, I am very happy to be here with you following a win, and it should lead to a more pleasant experience for our listeners, although we really appreciate y'all still sticking around even though the team hasn't been playing very well. So, yeah, to discuss this victory here today.
Speaker 2:Jay, on touchdown jaguars yeah, man, what has been since what november that we've gotten to discuss a victory? Uh, maybe even longer, but I think it's november, uh. So, yeah, man, I'm glad that that we were able to get a W on such a special occasion, right, the throwbacks they brought back, the throwbacks, of course, inducted in Tom Coughlin, which you got to see with your own eyes into the pride of the Jaguars. That was huge. And you know that was kind of what my mind was on was like, man, you know, as harsh as we've talked about Tom Coughlin, the front office leader we love the coach, right and I was like man, they can't do this on Tom Coughlin's day. Man, like, please, for the love of God, don't do this on Tom Coughlin's day, on this nostalgic day. And you know they were able to pull it off in the end, although, as you said, the defense tried to give it away. I think the unique thing about this win is that, as you kind of alluded to, it really doesn't change a lot, you know, which is kind of a good thing, you know, if you're looking forward to the future, and when I say it doesn't change a lot, you know it doesn't change a lot from the perspective of you know they still should fire Doug and Trent at the end of the year.
Speaker 2:I put a tweet out actually earlier this week, saying like, even if they were able to dig themselves out of the hole here, you got to get rid of both of them, in my opinion. That's not to say they will, but you got to get rid of both of them because they already shown they can't coexist with each other. So whatever success you had this year would be short term success. It wouldn't last. So for that reason you would have to get rid of them and also to like it don't really it don't really knock us out of the running for the first overall pick, which would be very valuable.
Speaker 2:Right For us, whether you take Travis Hunter or trade back. Right, we know we're not probably taking a quarterback, but you know either of those options is pretty dope to have. You know, especially for a new GM, if that's what we get. And at the same time, we still, while those things are within reach, we still get to celebrate a victory over the Colts, a hated division rival, and not only that man, but we kept the street going. So it's been a decade since they've won in Jacksonville, which is crazy to say.
Speaker 1:Yeah, still can't get a victory here in Duval County. No matter what name is on the stadium, whether it's Everbank Field, tiaa Bank Field, whoever the quarterback is they've tried multiple quarterbacks, still can't get it done. Even the ageless wonder that is Joe Flacco could not bring that streak to an end. So, yeah, jay, plenty to discuss here this evening as we dissect the Jaguars' first victory of the year. Speaker 1:But, jay, let's go ahead and jump right into business here, as the Jacksonville Jaguars were victorious over the Indianapolis Colts to improve to 1-4 on the year, 37-34 in a shootout, a game that, at least at one point, we were hoping was pretty much locked away, where they have a 14-point lead with about five and a half minutes left and the Colts, and Alec Pierce specifically, came roaring back. But let's go over the stat line here. Trevor Lawrence had one of those days that we had been waiting for for a while 28 of 34, 371 yards. Two touchdowns Did have. The one interception that was certainly forced and a mistake. I'm sure Trevor will definitely admit that, especially when he goes back and looks at it.
Speaker 1:Tank Bigsby man, what a day from him, as he continues to have an incredible season 13 carries, 101 yards and two touchdowns, including that 65-yard run where he was channeling his inner Fred Taylor as he had a great game. Travis Etienne only six carries. He was pulled a little bit later. In the game we saw a lot more Dearness Johnson, so it seems like that injury is still lingering. But the other big-time performance here rookie Brian Thomas Jr. Five catches, 122 yards and a touchdown. That 85-yard touchdown really got the crowd into it. Jay Christian Kirk also a solid day four catches, 88 yards. Now, etienne did have six catches, 43 yards through the air, so he was definitely involved in the passing game as well.
Speaker 1:Defensive side of things I mean, where else do you start but Trayvon Walker? Three sacks, including the game-clinching sack there at the end on Joe Flacco. Aventurell Miller was all over the field today, jay, so you know plenty to talk about in terms of defensive performances, despite the score. But yeah, I'll just toss it over to you first. You know what do you think of this performance. You know we have been talking about. You know how the defense has played very well. Unfortunately, that kind of went out the window here. 34 points against Joe Flacco in that offense. But yeah, what do you think overall about their performance and once again getting their first dub of the year?
Speaker 2:What do you think overall about their performance and once again getting their first dub of the year? Yeah, man. Well, I think like the biggest thing that I noticed that really helped, at least offensively with Trev and we kind of saw it throughout the game, and this is something I mentioned last week too is just getting him in a rhythm, and more so like just taking the gimme throws Right. It was a lot of check downs and, like you know, I don't want Trev to become a check down Charlie or anything like that, but it's too many times when we've seen him, you know, always trying to make the big play and he'll leave the smaller play on the field, right, you know the result in the sack, or interception, or well, he hadn't thrown a lot of picks this year, but um, or incompletion, whatever the case may be, and I think, like that was drilled in his head this week, you know it's like, hey, take some of those check downs, you know, because not only do they leave an opportunity to get the first down, but also to that gets you in a rhythm too. You know, sometimes short completions are the best completions because you know they'll help you in the end get in sync in terms of getting your your deep ball completions together, which we did, see them take some shots down the field as well, most notably to Brian Thomas Jr. So I think that was the biggest one. Now, of course, you know Indy was without a lot of their star players, right, I know they were out deforest buckner and have been without him for a while.
Speaker 2:Actually I'll pull up the um injury report here. Bear with me, phil, okay, so, yep, I got it up here, of course. Anthony richardson, the quarterback, which that might have helped us a little better if he did, but that's neither here or neither there. Kenny Moore, cornerback, who we talked about before here from the 229 area. Jonathan Taylor was out. Quiddie Paye was out. So you know, that's just a few guys, to name a few. Ryan Kelly, the starting center, but at the same time, like you know, we can sit here and talk about the injuries, but we shouldn't take anything away from the Jacksonville Jaguars for the simple fact that this is a league where you know nobody cares how injured you are. At least the other team does it Right. And we kind of talked about it with us when we went on that what five game skid last year of losses and kind of trickled into this year. Nobody cares when you're injured, right? So let's apply that same energy to this situation here with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and you know, being able to get the victory. And look, sometimes what it takes is, you know, you to win against a team that was a little bit beat up, that gives you momentum to maybe beat a team that's better down the road, and that trickles into another win, and another win, and another win, and next thing, you know, you're competing with the best in the AFC South, or the AFC in general, and the NFC. So this is a win they can certainly build on.
Speaker 2:Nonetheless, as you said, phil, and in terms of the defensive side of the ball man, just, it looked like pretty much for the most part, that the Colts were able to, you know, make plays at will. They missed a few, you know, and most notably, some of those plays were due to Trayvon and Josh Allen being able to apply the pressure that was needed. As you said, trayvon had a monster day, man. He probably literally and I was joking about this on Twitter maybe he saw those Aiden Hutchinson tweets that everybody had been putting out, but what a game he had, what a game Josh Allen had, they made one crucial play. While that defense did get torn through like paper mache for the most part, they did make those key plays, that kind of swung the momentum in the favor of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Of course, the sack that you mentioned at the end of the game, but most notably that play at the end of the second quarter where Josh Allen or was it Trayvon that got the strip and Josh Allen picked it up, left about five seconds on the clock, got us a field goal. You know, so you know when you're searching for the answers, a field goal here and there, that those little things help Right, and those fumbles that you recover to get you some points on the board and get you some momentum help. And you know, at the end of the day it was a game Doug put it best in his press conference At the end of the day it was a game where every side of the ball, especially the offensive side, but every side of the ball did their part in terms of bringing a complimentary play into the mix, right, whether it was the play we just mentioned on defense, with Trayvon and Josh, trevor, lawrence and Brian Thomas Jr linking up, or Tank Bigsby, you know, taking one back.
Speaker 2:And then, on the special team side of the ball, cam Little, the rookie very promising rookie, might I add coming through for the team when they needed him the most. Him coming through, and Logan Cook, you know, helping with the battle of positioning on the field as well, which we've already said. Like, logan Cook to us is like an all pro, if not I mean a pro bowler, if not all pro. So it was a complimentary game where every team, at every side, at least brought some kind of contribution, key contribution, to the game, and the result was this victory on this very special day for the Jaguars no-transcript.
Speaker 1:So yeah, special teams in general. We talked about it in the beginning of the year kind of like jokingly but also serious. This has the potential to be the best special teams in the league and that was on display here today between Duvernay, logan Cook and then, of course, the rookie coming in at the end, cam Little, and nailing the game winner Three for three overall. So he has been outstanding. Yeah, it was great to see A lot of fun, obviously, at the stadium. You know I texted you guys in the group chat before the game and told you like this is like the least enthusiastic I've been about being here, and you know that's what happens when you start 0-4. The weather wasn't great and you just hope, like you alluded to, that they don't embarrass themselves not only in front of you know, tom Coughlin, but also in these jerseys, with the field looking the way that it does, and I mean everything aesthetically was just on point for the team. So one thing I was trying not to be like a, you know, a trying not to live in this timeline. On my way out I was talking to our buddy, eric, as we were leaving the stadium, but like there is a reality in which this team is four and one right. I think you can probably throw the Buffalo game out of there, but every other game they've been competitive and just one thing or another went wrong.
Speaker 1:One thing that obviously went very right is Trevor was hitting those passes that he was missing last week to BTJ and Christian Kirk specifically. Yeah, you know you talk about the big day that Trayvon Walker had the forced fumble, the sack at the end, another sack there in the middle of the game. It all came together, man and uh. You know, while you don't want to see your team give up 34 points and also you don't want to see your team blow a 14 point lead with under six minutes to go, they were poised and they kept it together and they didn't let this thing completely, you know, slip out of their hands.
Speaker 1:And you know you feel relatively good with some of the names that are also going to get back here pretty soon Evan Ingram, tyson Campbell we might see in what the second London game, as well as some of the Dewey coming back as well. I never thought I would say that, but you know Andrew Wingard out there plays a very, very significant role. So how are you feeling right now? What's the outlook? You know one in four heading into two London games. We know how things go. How are you feeling going forward here at this point? Not totally similar to last year, but remember this is where things started to turn around, right before the London trip, and then they came home and rattled off a few wins.
Speaker 2:Well, not to be that person in terms of veering into the future, but it looks like that. You know. That's what a lot of the focus this year is going to be on this. Looking towards the future, though. Real quick, phil. I do want to say this this game was very telling of I kind of had this conversation on twitter, right, it's very telling of.
Speaker 2:The jags probably need Travis Hunter the cornerback. Well, I mean, hell, they could probably use Travis Hunter the receiver too, but they could definitely use Travis Hunter the cornerback, who always seems to be around the ball, and this game really showed us that. Because, coming into the season, right, remember, a lot of us were confident in the secondary and then, of course, tyson got hurt, savage missed some games. So, for that reason, like, as I was watching that game, I was like you know what, if they stumble on the number one pick or you know something close to the top five, they absolutely should be looking at Travis Hunter, if you know if that happens, because this secondary absolutely could use him. Now, yeah, in terms of answering your question about you know if that happens, because this secondary absolutely could use him. Now, yeah, in terms of answering your question about you know how I feel about going forward. You know me and you kind of have had this conversation in the thread with Boogie and Vez. But you know they're coming up on two London games where you know the opposition. They aren't used to making those trips routinely, so I always circle the two London games as two wins. Even with them struggling, it's not out of the realm of possibility that that could be two wins. Now, does that change the projection of the future and should that give people hope about them going to the playoffs? I would say no, probably, but nonetheless I do think those are two winnable games.
Speaker 2:Now the Bears are coming off a game in which they look dominant, but they were playing the Panthers right. So what can we take from that really? And of course, the Patriots. There was that report which might have been a little exaggerated, about the Patriots and them going through a mutiny in their locker room. But I will say this you know whether they're together or cohesive or not, they don't exactly scare me. You know what I'm saying In terms of a team that you know we should be feeling that the Jaguars can't take on or defeat for that matter. But yeah, I mean like I don't feel bad about the London games. Again, I don't know that this team is a playoff team. I don't. I doubt it, you know. But I don't feel bad about these London games just because we're used to it and you know. It's just a situation that we've gone through many, many times and they haven't.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I just think it's going to be really difficult if you're not maybe in the top three to get Travis Hunter.
Speaker 1:So you're going to have to hope that one of the teams there, maybe at one or two, needs a quarterback, and I'm not privy to who the quarterback options are for the upcoming draft. So forgive me, but you know, from what I know, travis Hunter is, you know what everyone's going to be looking at, and obviously New England, uh, there were. You know a report came out saying New England is, that's their coveted prize is Travis Hunter, to pair him up with Drake May. And, uh, you know they think they can quote-unquote dominate or something, something along those lines. As far as the quote Cincinnati is also one in four, you know their team think they can quote unquote dominate or something, something along those lines. As far as the quote Cincinnati is also one in four, you know their team obviously does not need a quarterback. The Rams at one in four, you know what are they going to be doing. Cleveland also not having a good season. And then you know there's always Carolina.
Speaker 1:Now, to kind of veer this discussion back into, you know, um, an area we don't usually discuss. You know there were those quotes out there from deon sanders saying I know he was talking about shador, but travis hunter, like, is he gonna want to go to carolina now? Listen and shout out to boogie who, uh, you know your nephew, college football extraordinaire, or at least so he thinks. Uh, travis hunter isn't in the same mindset of, from what I understand. Understand of. I'm not going to go here, but I'll tell you what if Carolina ends up with the number one pick, I would say, hey, maybe you tell your agent to let them know I ain't coming to Carolina. With all due respect to Carolina they are our expansion brother but with the way that team is right now and that owner, I wouldn't want to go there, absolutely not.
Speaker 1:So, yeah, I think it's just going to be really tough and I don't know they're going to be bad enough to be the number one overall pick. But hey, there's still a whole lot of football left to play. But yeah, a guy like Travis Hunter, pairing him with the guys we have now, and the core that we have now, jay, when, and the core that we have now, jay, when you talk about the future, when you think, thinking about Tank Bigsby we talked about him last week and Ventro Miller, now Brian Thomas Jr. Like could you imagine what a guy like Travis Hunter could do in this offense? You know, whenever they bring in, of course, the new head coach as well as the new offensive coordinator. So it is tough not to look forward and it feels great to win. And you know you're talking about coming back from London at three and four.
Speaker 1:You know who knows what the landscape of the draft order is going to look like at that time. You know, certainly don't expect Carolina to rattle off any wins anytime soon. The Patriots look bad. Cincinnati, even though they have all the talent in the world, can't get out of their own way as well. So who knows? It's going to be an interesting race for the number one overall pick.
Speaker 1:But let me ask you this here, jay, because I just looked it up as far as rookie of the year odds. Now it's going to be almost impossible because of the way that Jaden Daniels is playing. Malik Neighbors is hurt right now. Marvin Harrison Jr, I believe, is. I know he had a couple big games earlier in the year, not sure how he played today. Okay, two catches, 36 yards. So rookie of the year odds, I mean, is right now Brian Thomas Jr has to be second right behind Jaden Daniels. It's going to be again a really tall task to get more votes than the quarterback, but what we've seen, man, I think he's got to be right up there, bare minimum top three right oh yeah, I would say top two.
Speaker 2:I mean I, you know you can make the argument top three if you want to throw neighbors in there, but all it is Trevor Lawrence hate, right, and how people just say he's terrible, not our fan base, but others like that should make the case for Brian Thomas, right, you would think. But it don't work like that when it comes to a Jag winning anything. But I'm just saying, like you know, for those people, the same people who have that energy that Trevor Lawrence is not good, should apply that energy to help. You know, to say that with a Brian Thomas Jr's odds but yeah, you read my mind there, because that's what I was going to actually send you in the chat was these rookie of the year odds. But yeah, I would certainly put him at second man. But yeah, it is hard to beat the quarterback In this case it's Jaden Daniels.
Speaker 2:But it's just kind of hard to outnotch a quarterback in that particular situation. A quarterback that's playing well, right, like you know, when CJ Hendricks, cj Str. That particular situation, a quarterback that's playing well, right, like you know, when CJ Stroud was playing well, and you know we've seen other rookie quarterbacks kind of play well and it's just kind of hard to pry that from them unless they just take like a turn for the worse in terms of their play. But yeah, you got to think they would give it to Jaden Daniels, and he's on a bigger platform in terms of just the market he's in too, so that'll probably help him. And I mean, to his credit, man, he's playing great football. I always liked the kid to be honest with you, but he's playing some great football. I think the more unique conversation is it looks like the race is going to come down to like. We just mentioned three, the top three options. Well, I would think you got neighbors in the top three options as well. Three LSU guys Crazy that they all play together right.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and you know what's like crazy as well is that I'm a very pretty much casual college football fan when it comes to any type of football outside of Texas, and I didn't watch really any LSU football last year and you know, whenever they're not like right there in terms of like the playoff conversation, like I'm just not paying attention to those teams. So the fact that those three were together and you know, shout out to those Arizona State teammates, right, jay, that viral video when Jaden Daniels transferred from Arizona State to LSU, and you know where are any of those guys now. And you know I also am a fan of him and just always heard really, really great things about his attitude, about his leadership, and I said this on Twitter over the offseason the commanders are a sneaky pick to win that division. The commanders and I mean the Eagles and the Cowboys are just a complete mess, even when they're winning, they can't get out of their own way. So, yeah, shout out to Jane Daniels, man, I'm happy for what they're doing, and that fan base obviously went through a whole lot. Hopefully they can get a better stadium out there in, uh, in DC.
Speaker 1:But yeah, it is going to be near impossible to outdo the quarterback, barring any kind of injury. But yeah, monique Nabors would definitely be there. He is hurt right now, like I mentioned, but right now sitting at 35 catches, 386 yards, three touchdowns. He had that 12 catch performance a couple weeks ago against the Cowboys. Btj, currently on the year, 22 catches, 397 yards and three touchdowns. There should definitely be more and those statistics will definitely go higher, much higher, as the season goes on. But yeah, it's nice to see that they have seemingly struck gold with this pick, and I think it was maybe I didn't watch the whole clip, but I think it was maybe Hacker on the radio talking about hey, shout out to the Titans for giving all that money to Calvin Ridley. Right, I don't know if BTJ was still going to be the pick regardless. You probably say not. But hey, tennessee, I hope you're enjoying Calvin Ridley right now. Let me see what Rid's stats are for the year Nine catches, 141 yards and a touchdown. So hey, he's all yours.
Speaker 2:Tennessee, uh, shout out to rid for getting the money yeah, and I'll be the first to admit, phil, we were mad when we lost ridley right and um, I mean. Well, at the same time, we were happy with drafting brian thomas jr too, though. So I can remember when we went to the draft party you know me and you said it flat out like for as harsh as we've been to this team about their draft decisions and stuff like we'll never complain about, like getting Trevor Lawrence weapons, so we were happy with that decision. But at the same time we were ticked off with the really situation. But hey, man, leave it to the Titans. To, you know, save us from having a season that's even worse. The Titans, to you know, save us from having a season that's even worse. Just imagine if we spent that pick somewhere else, right On top of the 0-4 start that we had. We'd probably be, you know, having some words about that rookie that whoever we drafted that wasn't Brian Thomas Jr. We'd be having some words about him and how that was a poor decision too.
Speaker 2:So shout-outs to the Titans for saving us from or forcing us to make, forcing Trent Baalke, especially, to make a good decision, one that he routinely hasn't made because we talked about it. Right, phil. His history with drafting receivers is just terrible, but the Titans have helped veer him in the right direction and now we got, you know, the arguably, dare I say, the best you know, one of the top. What three deep threats in football right now. So you know, that's a unique thing to have, especially in a time where defensive play is up this year right, never thought I'd say that, but defensive play is up and trending upwards and, you know, offensive play is kind of trickling down a little bit, which I like that's good for the game. Um, not that I have a problem with it, but, yeah, man shout outs to them and uh, yeah, man, in terms of btj and what you were saying about, uh, jayden daniels, and saying that you were a casual.
Speaker 2:But think about this though, phil when you know me and you or you watched them individually, when you watch BTJ, in those individual games that we watched and that we went over when we drafted them, and before we drafted them, you couldn't help but notice who was throwing in the ball, which was Jaden Daniels, who you know he was making some plays himself. I guess, like when you look at that LSU offense though of course neighbors stood out the most. But every time I watch BTJ on film before and after we drafted him you know you couldn't help but look at Jaden Daniels and say like it's something about him, like he has a skill set that can translate to the NFL and you know he can make some noise for a franchise. He can get a franchise, you know, out of the dump. So that's exactly what he's doing.
Speaker 2:I'm happy for Washington fans, man, Like they deserve it because they've been through so much and you know the years of under Dan Snyder man like probably took years off of people's lives. Man Like watching him run a football organization and the mess they had going on. So yeah, man, he's been like he's so fun to watch. He's raining dimes in that stadium while the station has been raining sewage on people. So he's been a bright spot for them this year and I can't wait to see what the future holds for.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and you know, obviously we are near the top of the list in terms of Trent Bulkey detractors, like I said in the beginning of the episode. In terms of replacements, like we talked about two weeks ago, none of that has changed, but we are seeing instant impact from some of these draft picks, right, brian Thomas Jr, jerrion Jones, cam Little. We're seeing those guys come in and contribute right away, which is great and, you know, a nice breath of fresh air here in terms of the draft class.
Speaker 2:Yeah, as you said, we are his biggest haters. But yeah, one thing I also say about him too is you look at that class from last year, that 2023 class, and what they brought to this game. And it's kind of deja vu because we were talking about this last year. Phil, remember when we played the Colts last year? I think it was the first game of the season and it was Brenton Strange and Tank Bigsby who made a key play in that game, Although that one was in Indianapolis, but they made a key play in that game.
Speaker 2:Do you remember the play? They were on goal line and Brenton Strange missed his block and the man that he was assigned to block actually stopped Tank Bigsby in the background. So Brenton Strange looped around, grabbed Tank Bigsby and drug him in the end zone and helped him get into the end zone, kind of like Ezra Cleveland did today, and they was drugging him in the end zone today. But what I'm saying is the deja vu all over again. Those two, brenton Strange and Tank Bigsby, were two of the guys that made plays for us today. So you know, for as much as we cook Trent on here, I'll give him that Like two of his guys from last year's class that people wanted to fire into the sun stepped up big today. We'll see if they can continue that, because we're going to need them these next few weeks to, you know, maybe get a win streak going.
Speaker 1:Yeah, you're absolutely right, and there was a thread I can't remember, man, I wish I had it here in front of me from last week where somebody was breaking down Bretton Strange film and he is putting it together, man, and listen. We definitely need Evan Ingram back in the worst way. That is 100% true, but Brenton Strange is slowly figuring it out. We talked about this, you know, over the last few years where people have been wanting to mock a tight end to the Jaguars. They take time players that are sure things right, like Kyle Pitts. It just doesn't work like that, really, with tight ends. I'm not sure what kind of season Brock Bowers is having, but I know the Raiders have been a little up and down. But, yeah, brent, shout out to Travis Etienne, you know, in the locker room Praising his guy Tank, it seems like. You know, obviously, after a win, everybody feels a whole lot better. You know, really happy for that huge performance from Trayvon Walker. I believe he was the honorary captain for today's game as well and, yeah, it looked great. But, jay, before we wrap up, I would be remiss if we didn't discuss this, because it has been the talk of not only Jaguar Twitter but just NFL Twitter in general.
Speaker 1:These jerseys got to be the permanent look going forward, right. Obviously, it can't be for this season, but next year. I believe they are up for a change in terms of their jerseys and their primaries and you got to go with some form of this, right. I don't think you necessarily need to go with the throwback logo that you don't have to go that far but in terms of the look that they had on today, it just feels different, right, and I think it was early in the pregame.
Speaker 1:It might have been Brian Sexton talking about. You know, when it rains and those jerseys get wet and it becomes like a really deep teal and that's just like a top tier look in the NFL. I'm going to go out and say on the limb and say in NFL history, so they got to go with some form of the Prowler jersey as their primary going forward, right? They cannot roll out some boring shade of teal like they have over the last few years in terms of their primary jerseys. They got to go with something along the lines of what they put out there today, right?
Speaker 2:yeah, I mean what I will say is like, in terms of the, the throwbacks and prowler jerseys, I'm kind of with what you said last week.
Speaker 2:I kind of like the fact that we only bring them. You know, heading forward, we would only bring them out for special occasions, like I think, like they hold a special place in our heart, so they should be brought out for special occasions. We shouldn't like those shouldn't be like an everyday thing. Now, if you're saying like maybe get something that mocks that, yeah, of course, like they should definitely go with that. Look, I mean, I remember when we had that conversation. I think you know that the iteration of the show at that time, when we got the jerseys that we have now, was the Jags, and you know that's when we were with our buddy, jacob DeLoren Shout outs to him.
Speaker 2:Know, the issue with the jerseys was, you know we were saying that tom coughlin, just it looks like nike just gave tom coughlin a blank teal jersey slate and said, hey, what do you want to add to this? And you, you, I think you said something along the lines and I'm just paraphrasing here that's fine, just the way it is. Just add the numbers and add a jab and it feels like that's what. Like you know, whoever whether it was tom coughley, whoever it was um shot khan, whoever was in charge of designing that jersey or at least giving some insight on the current jerseys it felt like that's what it was. It was a blank slate that they just said, hey, put some numbers on it, put the logo on there, and we're good and we're golden.
Speaker 2:But yeah, I do think, like they do need to follow the format of the throwbacks in some way, shape or form, and I mean I think Nike will be open to that. Like you know, they're always open to what will make them money and clearly this would make them money because, like I mean, we were just talking about it, I ordered a Fred Taylor throwback and you know, they basically declined it because after a few months they ran out. So obviously these are selling well. Obviously, that's something Nike should look at and probably will look at statistically when they run the numbers of how they're selling. And I can't wait to see what the jaguars do or what they're thinking in terms of, you know, their jerseys of the future.
Speaker 1:But I'm cool with leaving the throwbacks as an occasional thing, uh, each year yeah, I agree, I just, whatever that, whatever results in them rolling out the teal more. You know they have one of the most unique colors in terms of their primary color in all of football. And what was it like on monday night football they were wearing, you know, white and black. You know, why aren't there teal pants? Why aren't we rolling that out there?
Speaker 1:Uh, you know, in a couple weeks, against minnesota, they're going to have the white helmets, but you know they can't wear the all white jerseys, unfortunately, due to a stupid nfl rule. You know, so all of that doesn't make any sense. But whatever the next design has to be, they need to look really hard at the Prowler design and make them as unique as possible, because that teal color, man, it just, it just feels different. You feel better about how they look on the field and, if anything, if they're going to get, if they're going to get rolled on the field, at least they got. They can look good in these jerseys, right, so go ahead, jay.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I mean one more thing. I'd be interested in getting those all-black throwbacks going.
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2:Yeah, like that's what they should be having a discussion about. It's like when are you know like bringing those back in? When would be a good time to roll those out? Like what occasion should we roll those out for? I mean, nothing comes to mind in terms of like a special occasion that's coming in the future, maybe I don't know, like maybe when nah, that's too far away. I was about to say maybe when the stadium opens, but that's like four or five years out. So disregard that. But I would bring those out for a special occasion out. So disregard that, but I would bring those out for a special occasion that all black look man I I have crazy memories of Maurice Jones drew running over people in those throwbacks, and Fred Taylor too, and so that's something that I'm interested in as well that they haven't really discussed or talked about, at least not on social media, or we haven't heard anything in terms of on the internet about the Jaguars, like maybe rolling those out.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I had a black Byron Leftwich jersey and I think a Reggie Nelson, if I remember correctly. Shout out to the person in my section today that had a black Fred Taylor jersey on. Yeah, everybody in their throwback stuff looked great today, and not only the Prowler jerseys that were out today. You know a lot of classic jerseys. I wore my David Garrard jersey today. So, yeah, man, it was a fun day all around, even though it did get a little stressful there towards the end.
Speaker 1:But the last thing I'll say on the jerseys is there are just too many talented people out there on social media, jay, you know, shout out to those graphic designers that can cook up these incredible mocks in terms of jerseys for them to come out with something as plain as the current look is now, and so that's what I'll say. So, nike, jacksonville, do whatever you have to doire somebody. Get some concept work going from some of these content creators, do some sort of group study and bring people in about what they want and what they don't want. We definitely want to see more teal and more unique designs here in Jacksonville. But, jay, anything else you want to mention, you know from this game, as we, you know, coming up on the 45 minute mark.
Speaker 1:They got that trip to London coming up, and I mentioned earlier the players that are going to be hopefully making their return here shortly to the roster. So you know, barring any future injuries, knock on wood, the roster is going to get stronger and you certainly want to see that heading into your trip overseas. So anything else you want to mention or discuss before we wrap up for the week?
Speaker 2:No, nothing else to really add, aside from it would be nice if the team sponsored us a trip to London for two weeks, and you know we can cover the team from London. But aside from that, man, I'm not sure if I'm excited about the next two weeks or not, because you never know what you're getting with this team. But we have some interesting games coming up, to say the least. And yeah, man, I'm just glad we could soak in a win for a change and get a people you know a positive conversation for a change.
Speaker 1:Absolutely so. Enjoy your victory, monday, duvall. You have earned it and we'll see how the team responds. Will they continue to carry this positive momentum into the london games?
